French Kiss, an all-new sweet and sexy friends-to-lovers contemporary romance from debut author Stacy Travis, is out now!

Read my review here!

FrenchKiss-ebook6x9

It didn’t take a medical degree to know that Josh Weitz was insanely hot, from his swoony grey-green eyes to his dark hair that begs my fingers to run through it.

But he was my best friend, and I was too busy crushing on his roommate–otherwise known as the ‘Wrong Guy’–to notice.

Sure, Josh has always been there for me, and he makes me laugh like no one else can. But it’s only when ‘Wrong Guy’ stands me up in Paris and Josh shows up for me, once again, that I start to appreciate all the things I’ve been missing.

Like the way his eyes crinkle when he laughs, and how he always holds the door for me and the unexpected kiss we share under the Eiffel Tower. He makes me feel that spark I have always longed for.

But trust doesn’t come easy for me, and being with him is a risk.

Will I lose my best friend . . . or my heart?

Excerpt:

I was so lost in that marvel of architecture that I was caught off guard when Josh brought his hand up to my cheek and his fingers lightly guided my face to look at him.

When I did, I saw only seriousness in his eyes as he gazed back at me, different from the way he’d ever looked at me hundreds of times before. Then he lowered his lips to mine, tentatively at first like he wasn’t sure if I’d stop him.

I wasn’t sure either, but instead of mulling every angle and implication, I gave in to the moment, enjoying the newness of his lips, their contour and taste. I shifted to face him a little more squarely and reached to wrap my hand around the back of his neck. His lips were soft, and the only thing I knew for sure was that I wasn’t backing away.

Good lord. It felt too good.

Long overdue. And surprisingly hot.

He pulled me a little closer, and his tongue gently parted my lips and slid inside, grazing mine before circling and swishing and drawing me further in. I felt myself respond automatically, wanting to feel more of him, wanting to be carried away by him.

He drew back and tracked the outline of my lips with his finger. Every touch had a ripple effect.

He kissed me lightly before backing away to look at my face. Waiting for my reaction. It was all I could do at that point—react. Go with it.

Eyes never leaving his, I pressed my body in closer to him and felt him respond by pulling me in a little tighter. I wanted to stay right there with him in our little envelope of space on the back of the boat. It wasn’t about finding solace over a broken heart.

Instead I was fully invested in feelings for Josh that I didn’t even know I had.

Because I was so busy avoiding the bad boy in my life I’d completely overlooked the good one.

I could feel the bubbling questions in my brain about whether I was making a mistake. The only way to quiet them was to press my lips against his and feel the fire ignite in every part of me. No, the first time wasn’t a fluke. Everything fell aside the second Josh’s lips connected with mine. His hand was so gentle, his fingertips brushing the side of my face and tangling in my hair. I felt chills down to my toes at his touch and I lost all track of where we were.

No one noticed us—their eyes were focused upward on the bright lights and magnificent soaring structure and the videos they were capturing on their phones—but it wouldn’t have mattered if they had. The only thing that mattered was him.

Josh pulled back, his eyes searching my face to see what I was thinking. I could barely control my racing heart, let alone say a word, so I folded myself closer into him, putting my head on his shoulder and wrapping my arm more tightly around him. “I guess I picked the cheesiest moment to kiss you,” he said finally, which made me laugh. It was so Josh, overthinking and self-critical but at the same time not about to let any doubts alter his course.

“It was the perfect moment.”

It’s a rough world out there, and we all sometimes need a good, romantic beach read, even if we can’t make it to the beach. I’ve spent many lazy days walking the streets of Paris and other gorgeous European cities, and if I’m doing it right, I’m bringing you a dash of romance and a vacay fantasy.

I can’t sit still, so when I’m not hiking, biking or running, I’m playing a very average game of tennis. Background music for writing undoubtedly features some U2, Lizzo, Billy Joel, Pink, Taylor Swift, and Led Zeppelin. Not necessarily in that order. And if I could only eat one food group, it would be cheese. Or wine. Or bread. Are those food groups? Whatever.

Excerpt

She was waiting for me to run away.

The woman in front of me, with whom conversation was akin to playing barefoot hopscotch on hot asphalt, who walked like shoes confused her, and who smelled of a spring breeze through a field of wildflowers, expected me to turn tail and bolt.

I rarely did the expected, however, and often made choices that flew directly in the face of convention. And as nothing about this woman or this conversation was conventional, I stayed.

And I laughed.

This startled her, and she suddenly dropped to the floor in what seemed at first to be a defensive maneuver, but was actually a crouch in order to pet the cat. Her posture put her face at approximately groin height, and for the space of exactly one half-second, I considered remaining in place to see if she would notice. But chivalry got the better of me, and I knelt down beside her.

Her face flamed bright red, and for a moment I thought she was ill.

“I was just staring at your penis, wasn’t I?” she said in a tone of complete chagrin.

Rarely did I meet someone even more straightforward than myself, and I attempted a benign expression. “Were you?”

The delightful woman sighed. “I was. I’m sorry.” But then a mischievous glint came into her eyes, and she said in a perfectly benign tone, “So, what do you think about my pussy?”

I choked on a startled bark of laughter, and she allowed herself a small grin as she deliberately ran her hands through the fur of the very contented cat.

“On that note, I believe it’s time for me to find something red to drink to match the color of my face,” she said, as she rose to her feet. She wasn’t graceful about it, but she was strong and didn’t wobble until she tried to take a step. She’d managed to stand on the hem of the pink silk gown she wore and winced at the sound of her heel tearing the fabric.

“Well, now I’ve officially hit my humiliation quota for the night. Enjoy the party, Mr. Masoud,” she said brightly, as she hurried away across the room. I let her go without further comment, though my eyes tracked her as she plucked a glass of red wine from a passing tray and finished half of it in one large gulp.

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 5 ⭐️ Review: Piper Sheldon’s The Treble with Men ✍🏻

Overall Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

“‘I think the past is tricky. It shapes so much of who we are. Mistakes, especially. But they’re necessary, you know? It’s a fine line between learning from them and being indebted to them […] But you can’t let it hold you prisoner. It was just a lesson, not a life sentence.'”

You know when you read a book that you love to your toes, and you become so effusive about it that it overwhelms the words for your review? Well, this reader/blogger is there. To say that I’m incredibly impressed with Piper Sheldon is an understatement. When I read the first book of her Scorned Women Society series for SmartyPants Romance, My Bare Lady, I appreciated two facets of it: her reworking of the My Fair Lady story and her sense of her self as a writer. I enjoyed that book, titillated by the fact that she chose one of my favorite stories to retell in the context of Penny Reid’s Winston Brothers universe. However, there were a few moments in her story that felt a little slow. I had a grand appreciation for that book, but I wouldn’t say that I would gush profusely over it.

Then, she wrote The Treble with Men. And I’m done.

This second book of her Scorned Women Society series is exponentially better than My Bare Lady. It is a treatise on control. Some of us struggle with embracing the message behind the popular Disney film, Frozen, in “letting go” of life, embracing the moments to connect and improve and feel a passion for life. This is the essence of The Treble with Men. Sheldon nestles this lesson within the world of Reid’s Tennessee and the world of music. Even more, like her My Bare Lady, she utilizes the vehicle of The Phantom of the Opera story to give it life. In doing so, she reimagines this oft-loved tale with a different ending, one that feels wildly better than the original. All of these attributes conspire to scream at the ingenuity of Sheldon’s storytelling. It is all of this and more that should compel you to “one-click” this book.

“I’d shown her my love in the lessons. In the music. I could tell her everything. I could tell her the truth of my love for her, but then what? It would still be me choosing for her. She needed to make a choice about her own life. I wouldn’t be another person telling her what to do. I wouldn’t hamper her growth. I loved her too much.”

What is it about The Treble with Men that makes it worthy of your time and energy? Here’s the list:

  1. At the most basic level, Piper Sheldon has the best cover of the SmartyPants Romance world. Bar none.
  2. Her retelling of The Phantom of the Opera is done in such a way to challenge our notions about the original. For many of us, the ending of that story is bittersweet, as we want Christine to choose the Phantom, but she doesn’t. <<<Spoiler alert>>> Sheldon’s Kim Dae does, and it’s glorious. It suggests that the seemingly most difficult character of a story can also be loved. That’s the heartbreak of the original: that the Phantom is unworthy of love because he isn’t offered up in a neat pretty package. With Sheldon’s story, Devlin, the “phantom” character, hides behind a constructed persona as a defense and for good reason. As the reader, you empathize with him, and Sheldon allows us to do so because Kim (Christine Day) is never truly frightened by him; she is intrigued. She sees him better than everyone else in the story. Sheldon offers us an initial lesson that “nothing is ever as it seems,” and we, as human beings, should look deeper for a greater understanding: something missing from OG Phantom of the Opera. This, right here, magnifies Sheldon’s genius as the author of this story.
  3. The characters are compelling. Both Kim and Devlin are fighting for control of their lives. Kim does so at the expense of the depth of her talent. Thankfully, Devlin “sees” her (just as she fully “sees” him), and he challenges her control. As he encourages her to embrace her passion, this allows Devlin to feel his. These two drive each other forward, propelling them to greater heights, including their chemistry and eventual love for each other. Their feelings of lust and love heighten Sheldon’s story, and it engages the reader more deeply into the book’s pages.
  4. Secrets always make for greater suspense. The Treble with Men is a book of secrets. Both Devlin and Kim are holding onto them tightly. I won’t divulge anything here, as I don’t want to spoil the book for readers. What I want to do is give a nod to Sheldon’s use of it to build the tension of her book. Sometimes, stories divulge their secrets too quickly, and the pacing and depth of the book are lost. Sheldon suspends her readers for the right length of time that you find yourself enraptured in her story because you can’t wait to see how the secrets upend the lives of the characters. Since those secrets aren’t divulged until later in the story, this book becomes one that you simply can’t put down. Even after we know Devlin and Kim’s secrets, there is fall-out from them that keeps you engaged. Sheldon has paced this perfectly to grab the attention of her readers until the last page.
  5. And probably one of the most important aspects of this book is its diversity. For one, it is set in the world of music. Kim is a cellist, while Devlin is the conductor. There aren’t many romances written in this world, creating an interesting space to inhabit for the story. Secondly, Kim is a POC. As such, she doesn’t “look” like your average heroine. At a time when diversity is necessary for romance, I love this choice. Even more, while Kim is a driven perfectionist, this doesn’t read as a stereotype; instead, it suggests that it is a personality trait of Kim’s. Sheldon’s choice for her heroine feels important in our world.

I believe I have gushed enough over Piper Sheldon’s The Treble with Men enough. From its cover to its title to its characterizations to its storytelling, this book is another example of what SmartyPants Romance is doing right. It’s opening a world to more voices. In doing so, Penny Reid gives us new authors with new voices that need to be heard. Sheldon’s story is an important one because it reminds us that there is freedom in living our truth and our passions. We shouldn’t work so hard to control every aspect of our lives because we miss out on the prismatic colors of it. Devlin and Kim come to this understanding, and Sheldon’s story finds even greater heights. If you love the re-telling of a favorite story, then you will definitely love Piper Sheldon’s The Treble with Men. I know I did.

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 4 1/2 ⭐️ Review: Sara Ney’s Bachelor Boss, book 2 in The Bachelor’s Club series ✍🏻

Overall Grade: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 1/2

So. I hadn’t read the first book of Sara Ney’s The Bachelor’s Club series prior to signing up for the ARC of Bachelor Boss. The first book, Bachelor Society, was legitimately burning a hole in my Kindle while I was reading other ARCs. Why? Because I had read Ney’s How to Date a Douchebag series and learned quickly that I loved her construction of heroes. She has this way of writing douchebag-heroes who you can’t help but love and hate. At the beginning of her rom-coms, you can barely stand her heroes: they are quite frankly, sometimes, dim-witted, narrow-minded, playboys. In the world of romance, these are some of THE best heroes because they will meet a heroine who will “rock their world.” One minute, you find them ogling anything with boobs and a skirt (or short-shorts), and the next minute, Ney’s heroes are falling down the deep path towards everlasting love. What Ney does brilliantly is craft this journey in such a way that her heroes rarely recognize it until it hits them square in their head. For this reader, there is NOTHING like a “redemption” arc, or at least Romancelandia’s equivalent to it. And “this redemption” brings energy to her stories as they inhabit any of the various romance tropes: brother’s best friend, enemies-to-lovers, workplace romance, etc. Ney’s newest book, the second book of the series, Bachelor Boss, is no different.

Now, I will say that I actually like Phillip, the hero, more than her hero in Bachelor Society. Going into the book, and knowing a little bit about Phillip, I thought there would be more of the same bully-ish way about him, much like Brooks had been. However, that isn’t the case. I mean, he’s a bit dense (like Brooks), a bit of a player (also like Brooks), and slow to understand his feelings (just like Brooks). All of these traits conspire to put you, the reader, at arm’s length. Yet, as Phillip meets Spencer, the heroine and his office mate, her irreverent way of pushing his buttons begins to unravel him. In his unraveling (which is Ney’s specialty), we glimpse someone who actually has a depth of character that seemed non-existent in Ney’s first hero of this series. Phillip reads a bit more sensitive once you move past his douchebag exterior. While he fights settling down, in the back of his mind, he wants to find The One, settle down, and have children. Eventually. With that layer, Ney shows us that Phillip has a depth to him, and redemption is inevitable if he finds the woman who can love him fully, which, of course, Ney creates most splendidly.

While Ney is a genius at writing these heroes who you love to cringe at, she also has this ability to devise her heroines. First of all, while her heroines are beautiful, there is a sense that they are “any girl.” They tend to have normal bodies, and they are incredibly quirky. You know that it takes just the right guy to love Ney’s flavor of heroine. Each of her heroines is self-possessed: they know who they are and they don’t bemoan their eccentricities. They are simply “who they are.” Spencer is Ney’s heroine in Bachelor Boss, and she is the “zing” to Phillips’s “zest.” She is the only woman who can admonish him, challenge him, and fall for him. While he is a “numbers guy” focused on business, Spencer is his artistic complement. Where she’s creative, he is constructive. As such, this creates a fire of chemistry, some compelling banter, and a romantic journey that engages the reader to the very last page. Spencer can only be the partner for Phillip. Once both of them realize this, the happy ending is right around the corner, and it’s a perfect one.

There is one added touch to this series: pets. In Bachelor Society, Abbott’s cat provided some additional hilarity in the story. In fact, Ney gives these pets their own points of view. While this can sometimes break the chronology and force of her storytelling, it offers a respite too. You can chuckle at Desdemona’s perspective, as s/he observes her owner and love interest. For Bachelor Boss, we gain the perspective of Phillip’s dog, Humphrey. Like Desdemona, Humphrey has his own agenda. He wants what he wants when he wants it, and it sometimes wreaks havoc in the life of his owner and, by extension, his love interest. Like Desi in the first book of the series, Humphrey has his own chapters where we “see” through his perspective Phillip and Spencer’s burgeoning relationship. Those chapters are really more focused on Humphrey getting his needs met in his way, but it also provides a different perspective, one that makes you chuckle. I think incorporating these voices into her story adds another level of humor as it points us to what we, as pet owners, often believe our pets to be thinking. It also pushes us back a bit from the journey of her hero and heroine offering an insight that might not be found in other romances.

What Sara Ney does well in all of her rom-coms is make us laugh. Her books show us that anyone can find love. That love can bring the most dedicated playboy to his knees if it’s with the right woman. It’s the reason I keep reading her books. Just like her newest book, Bachelor Boss, I can laugh away the cares of my day at the lengths her heroes will go to remain single even as they pine for the heroine. That her heroines hold that depth of power in her romances is another added bonus. If you haven’t read Sara Ney before, you should read this series: Bachelor Society and Bachelor Boss. It’s a perfect read during this imperfect time.

In love and romance,

Professor A

All I wanted to do was run away, I never expected to crash into his arms…

After leaving the city life behind to escape my loveless marriage, I moved to small town Havenbarrow for a fresh start.

What I didn’t expect was to find myself drawn to the town’s black sheep.

They called him troubled. Cold. A man with a dark past.

What everyone seemed to miss about Jax was the splashes of light in his eyes. The random acts of kindness he performed when no one was watching. The way he made me smile and laugh.

Jax helped unpack the baggage I’d been carrying around with me. He was patient with my pain and gentle with my scars. He was the stillness during my hurricane.

Yet when both of our pasts come back to haunt our present days, we realized quickly that sometimes love stories didn’t end the way we’d hoped.

Sometimes you were left with only the damage from the storm.

Excerpt

Kennedy

Joy Jones was quite the character to take in. That morning, when the sun came up, she walked outside to her front porch and sat down in her rocking chair with a smile on her face and a large cup of coffee. A few of my nosy visitors told me that it was a daily routine for her.

Her silver-dripped hair was tossed up in a messy bun being held together with two knitting needles, and her thick-framed, vibrant-orange glasses sat on top of her head. She wore a vibrant bow in her hair that matched her dress for the day, and she always greeted everyone who passed by her house, even when they didn’t speak back to her. Everyone in town called her Crazy Joy, even though she was the kindest person. Her only odd quirk was that she never left her property.

I wondered how she managed, though. I wondered how she kept living without stepping foot outside of her home. It seemed she hadn’t any children and she didn’t have a caregiver who came to aid her, from what I could tell.

Later that morning, my questions were answered as a blue pick-up truck pulled in front of the house. Needless to say, my jaw dropped to the ground when I saw Mr. Personality step out of the vehicle. He walked his way straight toward Joy’s front porch with his arms filled with grocery bags.

He proceeded to greet Joy. She stood from the rocking chair as he set the bags down on the porch. Then, he hugged her.

He hugged her!

I wouldn’t have thought someone as grumpy as Mr. Personality had the ability to hug someone. The two of them walked inside to put the groceries away, leaving me completely baffled and unable to return to my scheduled reading. It took a lot to break me away from a book. And by ‘a lot,’ I meant a lot. My house could’ve been on fire, aliens could’ve beamed me up, and I would’ve still been trying to get in that one last page. When my own love story was broken, I turned to story books to heal the cracks of my broken heartbeats. When my world fell apart, the story books still believed in happily ever afters. Those books saved me on the days I felt my soul falling victim to the hardest of storms.

Yet, Mr. Personality pulled me away from the words against the page. He made me curious about him walking into Joy’s house. Watching him chat away with her had my mind racing. A few minutes later, when the two of them walked back outside with two glasses in their hands—one with wine, the other with some dark liquor—whiskey, I assumed—I couldn’t stop myself from glancing over to them. Joy kept talking, and Mr. Personality kept responding. Even though I couldn’t hear what they were saying, Joy looked beyond smitten with whatever was being said her way, which forced my own heart to skip a few beats.

Well, I’ll be damned.

The town’s asshole made me swoon.

For some, the bravest thing a person could ever do is to admit that they’ve fallen in love.

Saying the words out loud changes everything and there’s no way to take them back. It’s impossible to pluck the words out of the air and slip them into their back pocket to keep the truth safely tucked away.

The best feeling in the entire world though, is to know, irrevocably, that the person they fell in love with, fell just as hard in love with them. That’s what makes a romance, a romance.

Need You Now is a collection of four best-selling novels including:

The Dirty Duet by Laurelin Paige
Half Truths by Claire Contreras
Sinner by Sierra Simone
Hostage by Skye Warren and Annika Martin

Meet the Authors

Laurelin Paige

laurelinpaige

With millions of books sold worldwide, Laurelin Paige is a New York Times, Wall Street Journal and USA Today Bestselling Author. She is a sucker for a good romance and gets giddy anytime there’s kissing, much to the embarrassment of her three daughters. Her husband doesn’t seem to complain, however. When she isn’t reading or writing sexy stories, she’s probably singing, watching Killing Eve, or dreaming of Michael Fassbender. She’s also a proud member of Mensa International though she doesn’t do anything with the organization except use it as material for her bio. She’s represented by Rebecca Friedman.

She lives in Miami, Fl with her husband, two adorable boys, three bulldogs, and two stray cats that she refuses to admit are hers (even though they live on her porch, she named them, and continues to feed them). When she’s not writing, she’s usually lost in a book.

Sierra Simone

SierraSimoneSierra is a voracious reader of all things including the smuttiest smut, young adult, piles of non-fiction for research, and everything Bill Bryson (especially on audio).

She loves writing the dirtiest things that she can think of, King Arthur, sparkling water, Tarot, coffee, leggings, and learning new words daily.

Her previous jobs have included firing ceramics, teaching living history lessons in one-room school house in full, 1908-approved school marm attire, and working as a librarian for several years—not in that order

She lives in the Kansas City area with her hot cop husband, two children, and two giant dogs. (And two cats, but they’re so naughty we don’t talk about them.)

The social media she cares about the most are Spotify and Instagram. Following her in those places is a true love language, indeed.

Sierra is represented by Rebecca Friedman of RF Literary; foreign rights are handled by Bookcase Literary. You can reach her at thesierrasimone@gmail.com, rights inquiries can be directed to Rebecca Friedman at Rebecca@rfliterary.com.

Annika Martin

annika martin

Annika Martin loves fun, dirty stories, hot heroes, and wild, dramatic everything. She enjoys hanging out in Minneapolis coffee shops with her writer husband, and also likes birdwatching at her bird feeder alongside her two stunningly photogenic cats, especially when she should be writing. She’s heavy into running, music, saving the planet, taking long baths, and consuming chocolate suckers. She’s worked a surprisingly large number of waitressing jobs, and has also worked in a plastics factory and the advertising trenches; her garden is total bee-friendly madness and her most unfavorite word is nosh or possibly fob. A NYT bestselling author, she has also written as RITA award-winning author Carolyn Crane.
