✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 5 ⭐️ Review: CD Reiss’s Star Crossed ✍🏻

Overall Grade: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

What does it mean to live a one-dimensional life in a three-dimensional world? How do you find the colors and gradations when your life feels predetermined and empty for you? These questions underscore the depths of the message in CD Reiss’s newest book, Star Crossed. This story isn’t a new one for Reiss. It was initially packaged as Shuttergirl. However, she revisited it, revising it to the poignant story of people seemingly so different yet so much the same. It’s a second chance romance filled with the idea that life is meant to be lived on your own terms in the most abundant way possible.

Star Crossed tells the story of Michael, a Hollywood superstar, and Laine, one of the best paparazzas in Hollywood. What is interesting about their story is Michael and Laine know each other, as they were students together in high school. Even more, Laine and Michael were attracted to each other, but life gets between the two of them, and nothing transpires…until it does. Laine and Michael live their lives, circling each other without ever fully connecting. One night, that changes, and their journey begins. However, given their backgrounds, Michael as the son of Hollywood royalty and Laine as a former foster child, and current occupations, nothing will be easy for them. Is it possible for Michael and Laine find their cinematic ending?

There are three reasons you should read CD Reiss’s Star Crossed (and her other books, for that matter): story, steam, and style.

There is nothing easy about Michael and Laine’s romantic journey. As her title suggests, they are fated against each other. What is interesting about Reiss’s story is the idea that Michael and Laine are living lives that are “flat.” While there is the suggestion that they are so different, they are actually struggling with the same challenge: living an authentic life, apart from societal expectations and the past. Michael’s challenge is living his life to save his father and meet the expectations of society; like him, Laine must grapple with the sins of her past and her self-perception grounded in her issues of abandonment. These trials have led them to making choices that are grounded in varying degrees of survival. There is something safe about their lives. As their journey progresses, Reiss’s story connects us to her characters as they realize that, in loving each other, they can live richer lives. However, it requires bravery to do so. It’s this truth that draws the reader further into the story. Their chemistry, their attraction, their challenges, the forbidden nature of their connection, and their self-doubt conspire to tell a tale of self-discovery and the depths of love to transform. I “ate up” the pages of this book because Reiss’s story compels you to keep going until Michael and Laine find their ultimate truth and themselves.

If you’ve read any CD Reiss book, you know the steam of her books is set to burning. Her characters’ needs for each other sometimes transcend the unifying story idea. They need inside each other because it’s where they feel whole and complete. Star Crossed is no different. While this romance feels tamer than some of Reiss’s other books, Michael and Laine’s steam factor raises the level of their story.

Lastly, for me, Reiss’s true gift is her style. This may sound lavish in its assessment, but Reiss knows how to spin her words into gold. There are very few authors who I “lit-geek” out over, but Reiss is one of them. Every one of her books finds themselves copiously highlighted and annotated. She takes words and creates images that underscore the depths of her stories’ truths. In Star Crossed, she constructs these flat images: the air going out of a room, flat expressions, etc. to illustrate the one-dimensional life that Michael has created for himself.  As Laine enters his life, she brings more; she makes him feel less “flat.” Here’s the thing: authors use imagery and allegory and metaphors and similes all the time. You aren’t an effective writer if you don’t. What Reiss does, though, is she seamlessly incorporates these writing techniques and partners them with words that feel heavy and meaningful. It’s the reason almost every page on my Kindle finds a highlight. Her syntactical dexterity provides the foundation for the depths of her stories. Star Crossed is no different. I couldn’t help but giddily revel in her wordsmithing. For me, that’s Reiss’s true talent.

I’m a southern California girl, not born, but mostly raised here, and Star Crossed feels like being home. No, I’m not a starlet or Hollywood type, but this story is the collective experience of my region. That Reiss uses it to convey the idea that we can have more and be more on our own terms made it an even more thoughtful read. We assume that everything that shines is successful, but that isn’t the case. Michael and Laine’s success comes in accepting themselves and embracing their love. If that’s your romance crack, then CD Reiss’s Star Crossed will feed the cravings of your addiction well.

Star Crossed - RB banner.jpg

Star Crossed, a steamy and unforgettable second chance romance set in the flashing lights of Hollywood by New York Times bestselling author C.D. Reiss, is out now!

star-crossed-cover.jpg

Michael Graydon has it all – looks, fame, and a couple of Oscars.

Does he see me in the crowd of paparazzi?

Does he know I sell pictures of him to the tabloids as if money could ever erase the feel of his lips on me?

Does he think I forgot the way he broke my heart?

Or does he know that I’ve ruined everything I’ve ever loved?

*

We were seventeen when I left, and I never forgot Laine. Not for one minute.

Since that day I’ve measured all women against her and every one of them has come up short.

We’re in the same town, on the same block, in the same building, and the gulf between us is just too wide to cross.

Until I stop running from trouble long enough to throw her camera off a balcony.

She’s a career-killer. A PR disaster.

Loving her again is career suicide, and I don’t care.

This time, I’m running toward her, even if it ruins me.

** Star Crossed was previously released as Shuttergirl, and includes a brand new epilogue and previously unpublished, totally swoon-worthy and emotional new scenes.

About CD Reiss

_21A6258_pp-fb.jpg

CD Reiss is a New York Times bestseller. She still has to chop wood and carry water, which was buried in the fine print. Her lawyer is working it out with God but in the meantime, if you call and she doesn’t pick up she’s at the well hauling buckets.

Born in New York City, she moved to Hollywood, California to get her master’s degree in screenwriting from USC. In case you want to know, that went nowhere but it did give her a big enough ego to write novels.

She’s frequently referred to as the Shakespeare of Smut which is flattering but hasn’t ever gotten her out of chopping that cord of wood.

If you meet her in person, you should call her Christine.

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 4 ⭐️ Review: Natasha Madison’s Southern Comfort ✍🏻

Overall Grade: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Okay, so I have to preface this review with the acknowledgment that I did not read the first book in the series: Southern Chance. It’s currently sitting in my Kindle Library, and I have every intention of reading it because, while these are a series of standalones, jumping into Natasha Madison’s Southern Comfort found me rushing to catch up. I note this because, if you are like me and picking up Southern Comfort without having read Southern Chance, you might find yourself a bit in the dark about the story. It is possible to quickly understand the background of these characters and their relationships BUT the entire time I was reading my ARC of Southern Comfort I felt as though I had missed out. That I was that person who had just joined a new friend group with a history that I didn’t yet fully know. To Madison’s credit, I easily understand the history. It didn’t take me long into her story, but I was missing an initial dynamic between the hero and heroine of this story: Casey and Olivia.

Now, you should know that you jump right into the action of Casey and Olivia’s story. From its start, this book is a fast-paced romantic suspense best friend’s brother’s story. The action begins right at the beginning, grabbing your attention and pulling you through its adventure. It’s clear that Casey and Olivia have a chemistry that exudes from the page. However, these two self-sabotage to the ultimate degree. Casey, a billionaire cowboy, tells us multiple times that he has no interest in getting married and having children. It’s not in the cards for him, even though he owns a home and farm that is made for a family. Herein lies the biggest issue with Southern Comfort: there are some inconsistencies in the story-telling. Casey’s spurning of a marriage and family when his life is made for that feels like a big leap. Yes, he’s a billionaire. Yes, his life is incredibly busy. Yet, his background and choices indicate a man who will, in fact, marry and have children. That he takes most of the story to realize that truth, especially when his heart screams for Olivia, feels meant to manipulate Madison’s readers. Every story requires tension, some inciting incident that pulls the hero and heroine away from each other. However, that tension should feel organic to their journey. This is where my lack of knowledge from not having read Southern Chance could be undermining my reading of Southern Comfort. I’ll have to read that book to find out. What I do know is that Casey is a persistent, stalwart, masculine, alpha-male. He clearly adores Olivia based on his care for her. He’s the archetypal romantic hero who readers love. He will literally lay down his life for his heroine. His inconsistency in actually choosing her is the issue at hand in Madison’s story.

The other inconsistency is Olivia. Now, this story is, beyond billionaire, best friend’s brother story, a romantic suspense. Someone is trying to kill Olivia. At every turn, this person comes very close to completing his mission. And yet, Olivia tells us that she is bored and wants to go out. She isn’t safe, even on the farm of a security guru such as Casey. I found myself confused. Casey agrees to take her to the local bar where, thankfully, nothing happens to her, but this moment illustrates a glaring issue with the story: how is her attacker able to get to her on Casey’s farm which has the highest levels of security, yet nothing happens at the bar? Even more, why couldn’t Olivia just “suck it up” and stay where it was safest? Additionally, Olivia threatens to leave on multiple occasions because she believes she is taking advantage of Casey’s family and putting them in danger even though they constantly show her their love for her. Madison is careful to develop Olivia’s psychology and background, specifically her mother’s verbal and emotional abuse of her, and this allows us to accept Olivia’s want to run. However, Casey’s family is vastly different from her own, and it felt a bit contrived for her to want to go home. These are really the only issues with Madison’s book.

What is lovely about Southern Comfort is its slow-burn towards romance. It’s clear from the start that Casey and Olivia are suited to each other. Madison carefully teases our emotions pushing these two together and then pulling them apart. In doing so, she builds their chemistry to a degree that requires them to eventually consummate it. When they finally do, it’s explosive. This seeks to underscore the action of the story, as Olivia’s life is regularly in danger. Casey must use his resources and his love for her to protect her from this danger.

There is so much in Natasha Madison’s Southern Comfort, and she leaves her readers with both a magical happy ending and a compelling cliffhanger. While there are aspects of her story that could require more attention, I know that I will be reading the next book of the series, Southern Storm. As a writer, Madison clearly sees her universe, and she’s apt to create it for her readers. As she crafts her world, she draws us into this sultry small town where love is found for anyone who chases it.

Everything changed the night he betrayed me, and now, the game has entered a new level.

Galen did me a favor, reminding me the only person I can count on is myself, and I’m more determined than ever to avenge my father’s death and avoid the destiny Sinner has mapped out for me.

Saint is used to calling the shots, but there are new rules, my rules, and if he wants me in his life, and in his bed, he’ll toe the line. They all will, because I can’t pull this off alone, and they owe me. I’ll enjoy making Galen grovel, seducing Caz, frustrating Saint, and keeping Theo at arm’s length, because they deserve it for failing me.

Sinner thinks he’s in control, but forcing me into initiation plays right into my hands. War has come to Lowell as rival gangs battle The Sainthood for ultimate power, and I enjoy rebelling from the inside, placing more obstacles in Sinner’s path while I exact my revenge.

But I’m not some innocent thirteen-year-old anymore—I have blood on my hands and lethal enemies on my tail.

I’m playing a dangerous game, especially where my heart is concerned, but there’s no turning back. I haven’t come this far to walk away empty-handed, and the more secrets we uncover, the more we realize how far-reaching the betrayal and corruption extend, and there’s no choice anymore.

Excerpt

Things with Theo were always complicated yet simple. Difficult yet as easy as breathing. Our relationship now is no less complex, but I know I need to fix things with him. It’s no different from Galen in that regard. I can’t cause a divide in the group with me, Caz, and Saint on one side and Galen and Theo being frozen out on the other side. But even if I do patch things up with them, I still don’t see how it ends up working out. There are too many barriers to unity, especially with Theo.

I remove my hand from Caz’s. “Hey, could you give us a minute?” I gesture toward Theo.

“Sure.” He kisses my lips. “I’ll grab us a table.”

Theo lifts his head, his eyes finding mine, and I hate the anguish I discover there, because I know I’m partly responsible for it. I step toward him. “Hey.” I peer into his beautiful hazel eyes. Green is most prominent today, but his pupils are ringed in a layer of brown and amber, and I could stare at his handsome face all day. Tentatively, I reach out, cupping one side of his face. “You doing okay?”

He shrugs, looking away, and I tilt his face around with my fingers. “Don’t do that. Please.”

“It hurts so much to look at you sometimes,” he admits, his voice cracking a bit.

“I know.” I press my forehead to his, and my heart beats wildly out of control. “I’m sorry if I hurt you with Caz in the car.”

“It’s not that,” he says. “I just miss you, Lo. Miss the way we were.” His hands land on my hips.

“I miss you so fucking much,” I whisper. Tears sting my eyes, and I’m horrified. I pull back, because I can’t break down here. “Can we go to the park tonight? Just you and me. Like old times?”

His eyes turn glassy, and a soft smile graces his lips. “I would like that. We are long overdue a talk.”

I nod. “You hurt me, Theo, and I’m not sure I’m ready yet, but I want to try.”

“I want to try too, because I want to fix things with us.”

“Do you think we can?”

He shrugs. “I don’t know. I think I’m even more confused than I was back then.”

“Because of me or someone else?” I gently inquire.

His eyes pop wide. “Is it—”

I shake my head. “I don’t think it’s obvious.”

The door opens, and Caz pops his head out. “You guys coming or what?”

“Always so impatient.” Theo punches him in the arm, but he’s smiling. “We’re coming.” He reaches back, and I take his hand, letting him lead me inside.
