✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 4 1/2 ⭐️ Review: Stacy Travis’s Bad News ✍🏻

Overall Grade: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 1/2

This review will be a bit different than my other reviews because to fully understand the reason why you should read Stacy Travis’s Bad News it resides in her growth as a writer between her first book, French Kiss, and her newest book. I know people might say that that shouldn’t be a criterion for reading a book, but if you’re like me, you look at other reviews of books by the author to make a determination about choice. It is really only a small picture of why you should read this book.

When I read French Kiss, I saw Travis’s potential as a storyteller. She has the amazing ability to bring in a description to set the scene for her romances. You feel as though you are there when you read the book. This is also the case with Bad News. You can see these places and people clearly in your mind, and she does this with just the right balance. As a storyteller, it’s important to create this type of balance, so that the reader remains engaged without being bored by over detailing everything. In Bad News, Travis has found this balance.

In French Kiss, I struggled with feeling the chemistry of her hero and heroine. There are reasons for this that complicate the story. In Bad News, the chemistry is clear. Travis is writing an enemies-to-lovers story with this book. There, I think, is an assumption that the chemistry writes itself with this trope. However, I’ve read plenty of romances where that is not the case. Jack and Linden can’t even help themselves. Travis crafts their building fire page by page, drawing you further into their story. When the complications hit, that chemistry still burns, but it becomes dangerous as it seems as though it can be extinguished. This was not the case with French Kiss; Jack and Linden’s couplehood is a decidedly impressive improvement in this sophomore book.

In her first book, I wrote in my review that French Kiss seemed like a romance between the author and Paris. It’s clear that Travis loves Paris. With Bad News, the story is the centerpiece. Between Jack and Linden’s complicated relationship and burgeoning romance and the underlying plot (reporters working together and finding a heady news story), you feel compelled to read to the last page of her book. Additionally, underlying the romance and the intrigue of the story lies a message about workplace politics. This is the gravity of Travis’s Bad News. Through the possible storyline that Linden and Jack follow and the potential relationship between these two, Travis reminds us that women often receive the burden of consequences in any workplace incident. It’s a reminder that, even in 2020, situations in the workplace are not yet equitable. Travis makes us believe that we need to be vigilant and aware, as her romance plays out on the page. This depth of message was one of the missing components in her first story.

I love to “see” growth in writing. It is my favorite part of teaching writing in college. Stacy Travis’s second book, Bad News, is a revelation in her ability to improve and offer up sexy, thoughtful romance. Jack and Linden are characters that intrigue you. Their story feels relevant and insightful, and their happy ending is a happy ending for right now. If you love enemies-to-lovers, newsroom romance, then Bad News should be on your Kindle for this weekend.

In love and romance,

Do I want the story?
Or do I want him?

Bad News, an all-new steamy, enemies-to-lovers romance from Stacy Travis, is available now!

BadNews-ebook5x8 (1)

Jack Galloway is an award-winning journalist, a star at The Examiner, and he’s got the chiseled jaw and deep blue eyes that light me on fire.

Oh, and I hate his arrogant guts.

He told my boss that I can’t hack it as a reporter. He actually said it was a mistake to hire me. But I just landed a scandalous story that will launch my career and prove him forever wrong. Yeah, it steps on Jack’s beat a little. Okay, a lot.

So our boss is making us report it together for an entire weekend. At a gorgeous oceanfront villa with sailboats and cocktails and oh…he looks good in a sport coat.

Jack brings out my insecurities. He makes me doubt my instincts. And ignites a desire in me that I haven’t felt before.

But I know he’s hiding something. And I know I’m risking more than my job by pursuing the truth.

If I have to choose, do I want the story? Or him?

82174572_110874253772057_2228028243443712000_oIt’s a rough world out there, and we all sometimes need a good, romantic beach read, even if we can’t make it to the beach. I’ve spent many lazy days walking the streets of Paris and other gorgeous European cities, and if I’m doing it right, I’m bringing you a dash of romance and a vacay fantasy.

I can’t sit still, so when I’m not hiking, biking or running, I’m playing a very average game of tennis. Background music for writing undoubtedly features some U2, Lizzo, Billy Joel, Pink, Taylor Swift, and Led Zeppelin. Not necessarily in that order. 20190718_DB01_Baking Me Crazy_Sorensen_KDP_FINAL

I’m Levi Buchanan, and until five years ago, I thought the legend of my family’s curse was a load of crazy, Southern nonsense.

No curse can make you fall in love at first sight. No curse can force a true, deep, passionate, all-consuming love that will haunt you all the days of your life.

Then I met Jocelyn Abernathy and I realized how completely wrong I was.

The problem is, Jocelyn guards her feelings like a well-armed soldier. She’s the most beautiful, stubborn, infuriating woman I’ve ever met. Every time she talks, I want to kiss the living daylights out of her. But I can’t.

Because when we met, she didn’t need true love. She needed a best friend. And that’s what I’ve been to her… for five years.

But when Jocelyn meets a handsome stranger her first day working at Donner Bakery and she lets him buy her a dill pickle cupcake, I realize with ominous regret that I may have missed my window with my best friend.

If I can’t get her to see past our friendship, my new curse may be to watch the love of my life move on with someone else.

‘Baking Me Crazy’ is a full-length contemporary romantic comedy, can be read as a standalone, and is book#1 in the Donner Bakery series, Green Valley World, Penny Reid Book Universe.

About Karla Sorensen

Karla Sorensen has been an avid reader her entire life, preferring stories with a happily-ever-after over just about any other kind. And considering she has an entire line item in her budget for books, she realized it might just be cheaper to write her own stories. It doesn’t take much to keep her happy…a book, a really big glass of wine, and at least thirty minutes of complete silence every day. She still keeps her toes in the world of health care marketing, where she made her living pre-babies. Now she stays home, writing and mommy-ing full time (this translates to almost every day being a ‘pajama day’ at the Sorensen household…don’t judge). She lives in West Michigan with her husband, two exceptionally adorable sons and big, shaggy rescue dog.

SYNOPSIS

I promised her that I’d live my best life once I was free.

It was that promise that led me to Voyeur–to Daniel.

What better place to conquer my fear of intimacy than a club that allows you to watch? Who better to help me than the owner himself?

On night one, my past comes roaring back, urging me to run like I always had before.

This time I ran into his arms.

With my fear still clinging to my skin, he brushed it away and made his own promise.

“I’ll teach you.”

His promise turns to friendship. A friendship turns to passion.

We didn’t know what to do with that passion— between the not-so-broken girl and the man who promised to never love again.

Daniel and I started because of a promise, and I hoped that we wouldn’t end because of one too.

upsy-daisy

Daisy Payton has everything.

Exceptional grades.

Impeccable clothes.

Model family.

But perfection comes at a high cost, and Daisy is wilting. Determined to use college as her chance to bloom anew, she’s focused on only one thing, leaving the Payton name behind and forging her own path—even if she has to tell the teeniest of fibs to do it.

Trevor Boone has nothing.

Abandoned as a child.

Raised by distant relatives.

Constantly reminded he’s a burden.

Trevor’s lived at the edges of opulence for years, having all he’s ever desired dangled just out of reach. But his ambition is finally about to pay off and nothing will distract him from his goal—finishing college top of his class and starting life, on his own terms.

When Daisy and Trevor meet it’s clear from the start that they’ll tempt each other to distraction, can they learn to put their ambitions aside and fall or will they lose it all?

‘Upsy Daisy’ is a full-length romance, can be read as a standalone, and is book #1 in the Higher Learning series, Green Valley World, Penny Reid Book Universe.

Excerpt

My room was small with pale yellow walls, one window on the far wall, two closets, two raised beds, and a single dresser. I’d beaten my roommate there and claimed the bed closest to the window. We’d made quick work of the cleaning and had gotten a good way through the decorating and hanging my clothes before Dolly flopped on the bed and called me to sit next to her.

I knew what was coming next. It was one of my favorite Dolly speeches. It was the “Today You Become a Woman” speech. My conservative guess was I’d become a woman twenty-three times in the last few years. It’d happened when I’d gotten my driver’s license, when I’d gotten asked to the junior prom, when I’d gone to the senior prom, graduation day … you get the drift. Dolly was good with marking milestones with big speeches.

She’d begin gently but I knew it wouldn’t stay gentle for very long, she would poke and pry and try to get me to cry and suddenly I was tired and ready for her to go.

“Do you like your room?” she asked innocuously.

I nodded, because I knew she hated when I nodded. Instead of reacting she simply stared and stared until I said, “Yes, it’s nice, a bit small for two people but I’m sure my roommate will be nice and we will make do,” I said it more hoping than knowing.

Dolly smiled, and then after a moment said, “Don’t be angry with your father …”

I stared at her confused, waiting for her to go on. She seemed to be struggling for words and so I patted her leg reassuringly. “Don’t worry, I’ll write him a letter. Or better yet, I think I saw a pay phone at the end of the hall, I’ll call him and tell him I’m not angry he couldn’t make the trip.”

She sighed. “No, Daisy, I know you’re not angry over that.”

There was another pause and she took a deep breath. “Daddy wanted to surprise you. He thought you might be more comfortable in your own room here since you have your own room at home.”

I continued to stare at her. “He called in a favor with one of his friends at the Alumni Association and they made special accommodations for you … someone will be by to collect the extra bed—”

“No,” I said more forcefully than I intended. I wasn’t angry with Dolly.

Although she had kept this from me until now, so maybe I should’ve been. In fact I definitely should’ve been.

“Dolly, why didn’t you tell me?”

“I knew it would make you upset. There is no use trying to change what’s done.”

“No use? Would make me upset? I am way past upset. I don’t want special accommodations. I don’t want my own room. I don’t want to be treated differently,” I hollered.

“Daisy, calm down. This isn’t the end of the world.”

How could I explain that it wasn’t the end of the world, it was a continuation of the same world.

And that was the problem.

I wanted to be Daisy Payton here, not Daisy Payton.

Because Daisy Payton played a mean game of spades, and knew how to cornrow in every direction. She had a natural head for figures, and could even do three digit multiplication in her head. She loved the Temptations and could cut a rug on the dance floor with the best of them. She could bake better than your eighty-five-year-old granny. She studied geography for fun. She got a four-point-oh during the worst year of her life. She was good with potted plants but terrible in the garden; weeds were foes she could not defeat. She’d been kissed twice. Once was awful and once was amazing, so amazing that she did it again, and then again—so really four times, but three of the kisses happened in one session. And she wanted opportunities to roll that fifty-fifty dice again to find out how the next kiss would be.

But Daisy Payton?

Daisy Payton had a powerful father. (That poor man.)

Daisy Payton was a rich girl. (She’s not but it doesn’t matter if people think you are.)

She had a dead brother, who got murdered in Vietnam. (What a useless war.)

Daisy Payton had a mother who was there and then *poof* was gone from breast cancer. (Poor Daisy.)

Daisy Payton went from rich girl to poor girl. Poor little rich girl that everyone looked at with pity.

And she hated it.

She hated that everyone, everyone thought they knew her.

She hated the assumption that if they hurt with her, or worse, for her, then it made the pain better, as if that made it the entire community’s pain; when it absolutely didn’t.

She hated that she still read and reread the letters from her brother. Some of the pages had wrinkles from being crumpled in fits of anger because oh, she was so angry when he left. And then she felt guilty and stupid and horrified that she’d almost destroyed his letters when they were all that was left. Some were starting to show signs of age, yellow in some spots and the ink fading in others, and she hated that too because how could so much time have passed without him?

And she hated that her mother had been helping her shop for homecoming dresses and was buried before Thanksgiving. It had spread so fast.

No junior prom dress shopping. No junior prom.

She barely remembered her senior year.

She hated that her friends and family and perfect strangers spoke to her in hushed tones and assumed she was broken.

She hated that they were right.

Because the ache inside her was relentless. It constantly missed her brother. It constantly missed her mother. It would not abate. It could not be moved. She was thoroughly, horribly, broken and all that brokenness was put up for examination by an entire town. That just couldn’t happen here.

For the whole of her life, the whole of Green Valley had treated her differently, and she absolutely hated it.

But she wasn’t in Green Valley now. And Daisy Payton had a plan.

Alpha (noun):

1) Having the highest rank in a dominance hierarchy

2) The most powerful man in a group

3) Liam Black

He was a stranger to me, a dark and dangerous presence who materialized from the shadows one rainy night to save me from a vicious attack. I didn’t know his name or where he was from. All I knew was that the only place I’d ever felt safe was in his arms.

But safety is an illusion.

And not every savior is a hero.

And—as I’d soon find out—having an alpha save your life comes with a price.

Liam Black wanted something from me in return.

I stare at him, incredulous. “Are you telling me you think this is a good idea?”

“No.”

“Then what?”

“I don’t know. Maybe nothing.”

His pause is loaded, and I know he’s carefully choosing his words.

“But she was about to get shot—or worse—and she fought back. You saw it yourself. On the ground, outnumbered, beat up, gun in her face, she throws a punch instead of all the other things she could’ve done. Begging for mercy. Giving up. Crying.”

He lets it hang there, knowing I have enough personal memories of men far stronger than she doing exactly that.

“So she’s a fighter,” I say, aggravated, yanking on the knot on my tie because it suddenly feels like a noose. “That doesn’t make it right.”

“Aye,” he agrees, nodding. “But maybe it makes it a little less wrong.”

I glare out the window, muttering a curse. I can’t believe he’s saying this. Him, of all people. I expected him to be silently seething with disapproval, not taking her side.

Not admiring her.

“You’ve been alone a long time, Liam. If you were careful—”

My temper breaks. I glare at him and thunder, “I won’t risk her life!”

Declan’s expression doesn’t change. His grip stays loose on the steering wheel, his gaze doesn’t dart away in panic. He simply meets my eyes in the mirror and tells me a devastating truth.

“You say that like you haven’t already.”

I grit my teeth and look out the window, hating that he’s right. Hating myself for letting it get this far.

I had a chance, when all I was doing was memorizing her profile while she poured me bad coffee. Before I knew the particular way she falls asleep. What her skin smells like after a shower. How her body feels pressed against mine.

How deeply satisfying it feels to protect her.

No, more than satisfying—fulfilling.

As if it were the thing I was born to do.

But I can’t undo what I’ve done. I can’t go back to that first day I saw her eleven months ago, helping an old woman cross a busy boulevard, stopping traffic by holding up her hand as the light turned from red to green. I can’t unfeel what I felt when she glanced up and our eyes met through the windshield for a moment before she turned her attention back to the old woman doddering by her side.

She was beautiful, but I’ve seen a thousand beautiful girls.

Never one who looked so fierce, though.

With her jaw set and her mouth pinched and her brows drawn together, she looked like she’d rip the head off anyone who dared to honk his horn at the painfully slow progress she and her elderly friend were making.

She was a lioness. Even without opening her mouth, I heard her roar.

So yes, it was simple curiosity that made me tell Declan to pull over. Yes, it was on a whim that I watched her wave goodbye to the old woman when they reached the other side of the street. Yes, I fully admit it was foolish of me to follow her into Buddy’s Diner, and to sit in her section that first time.

But it was sheer stupidity that I kept coming back.

As long as I was out of the country, I could tell myself I wouldn’t see her again. I thought I had the strength to stay away. But as soon as I returned, the wanting rushed back. The pull to see those clear green eyes. The need to hear that lilting voice and see that shy smile and be near her, if only for a moment.

Now, because I indulged myself, I’m well and truly fucked.

Because need and want have turned into something more powerful. Something darker and far more perilous, for us both.

So now I have two options.

Option one: claim her.

Option two: give her up.

I can’t bring myself to do either.

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 5 ⭐️ Review: Emma Chase’s Dirty Charmer ✍🏻

Overall Grade: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

When I began reading romance at the end of 2018, I believe one of the first authors I read as I was perusing Amazon is Emma Chase. I had only read a few romance authors, and I knew nothing about famous romance authors. Royally Screwed was an Amazon recommendation, and there was something about the cover and the blurb that grabbed my attention. The idea that a commoner could be plucked out of obscurity to potentially become a future king’s wife is many a romance reader’s dream. That he would abdicate the throne for her is even more of the fantasy. I fell deeply for Emma Chase’s brand of romance: alpha-ish hero + ambitious, intelligent, insightful heroine + the challenges of a kingdom such as Wessco. Add in an overbearing, but hilariously protective and insightful grandmother/Queen to add in layers, and I was hooked. After that, when Emma Chase released any of the Royally books, they hit my Kindle the day of release and I gobbled them in a day. To this day, my favorite of the four books is Lenora’s story, Royally Yours. That story is the dictionary definition of bittersweet romance.

When she announced her new Bodyguard series which takes us back to Wessco, I knew I was returning to this mythical place where the love stories are true fairy tales. Dirty Charmer, the first book of this series, does three things very well: (1) reintroduces us to Wessco and several of our favorite characters of the Royally series, (2) introduces us to one of the most virile, charming heroes I’ve read in Emma Chase’s books, along with a stately, intelligent, challenge of a heroine, and (3) offers a steam fest that will keep your glasses steamed and your panties…well, you can fill in that phrase.

Dirty Charmer follows one of my favorite romantic tropes: opposites attracting. In fact, this is the underlying message of Chase’s newest book. Abby, her heroine, and Tommy, her hero, are the definition of opposites. Yet, one of the best things about this trope is its elaboration on the idea that opposites offer two halves of the same whole. And that is the case with Abby and Tommy. From the first chapter, there is a clear chemistry between Abby and Tommy, and Chase doesn’t hold back on crafting their fiery coupling. Tommy’s ability to let life fall easily off his shoulders helps dirty up an Abby whose life is structured to an oppressive state. Every moment of her life and plan for the future has a distinct place, but it shows that she isn’t truly “living,” instead, walking through the motions of it. Tommy becomes the color of Abby’s life, and Abby brings a focus to Tommy’s. It’s here where Chase shows her best work. As these two push into and against each other, their chemistry is palpable and heats up every page until the end.

Whenever a hero and heroine undertake a journey of evolution, I find this irresistible as a reader. At the start of this story, Tommy is a fun-loving, playboy. People take his job knowledge seriously because he does his job well, but they don’t necessarily take his approach to life seriously. He is a one-night stand kind of guy. Yet, when he meets Abby, Tommy’s transformation begins. Without knowing it, Tommy’s journey will pale only in comparison to Abby’s. Tommy helps Abby become a better version of herself in that she stops living under the stricture of her family’s expectations by embracing her own life. Tommy and Abby’s journey is my favorite part of Chase’s story, I think, because we can connect to the idea that we aren’t completely defined by one or two actions or choices. Instead, we can be more, if we want it. Even more, we need to live a life of balance to live a full life. And sometimes, people come into our lives to tease those changes out of us. Chase artfully presents this idea drawing you into her romance.

Emma Chase has opened a door with Dirty Charmer. Tommy and Logan (the hero of Chase’s Royally Endowed) own a security company that is rife with potential future stories. For this reader who fell deeply for Chase’s Wessco romances, this is exciting news because Emma Chase has this capacity to offer romantic stories that challenge our thinking while offering up our fantasies in bold print. If you’re a fan of alpha-ish, funny-loving heroes and their intelligent, thoughtful heroines who burn the pages with their chemistry, then you should be reading Dirty Charmer. Today.

In love and romance,

Professor A

Release Blitz (1)

Dirty Charmer FOR WEB

I get to guard that beautiful body for the next two weeks, up close and personal.
Fuck—I love my job.

Dirty Charmer by New York Times and USA Today bestselling author, Emma Chase, is LIVE!

Abigail Haddock is stunning, sensible, and some would say . . . stuffy. But it’s not really her fault. She was raised in one of Wessco’s oldest, most affluent, aristocratic families—“stuffy” is their middle name. So is successful. Abby’s working overtime to distinguish herself as a top-notch physician, just as her family legacy demands.

She doesn’t have time for nonsense.

Tommy Sullivan’s all about nonsense.

Sure, he’s an elite bodyguard with lethal skills and co-owner of the renowned, S&S Securities Firm—protector of the wealthy and titled. But he’s also rowdy, fun and thoroughly irresistible.

Tommy knows how to have a good time, and he’s never seen someone more in need of a good time than Abby. The lass needs long, wet, filthy kisses—STAT—and he’s just the man for the job.

It doesn’t take long for a wildly sexy, sinfully satisfying, no-strings attached arrangement to turn into something more. Something sweet and addictive and real. But Tommy and Abby are too royally stubborn to admit it.

Opposites attract, everyone knows that. But can they last—can they love…for forever?
