Genre: Contemporary Romance

SYNOPSIS

I promised her that I’d live my best life once I was free.

It was that promise that led me to Voyeur–to Daniel.

What better place to conquer my fear of intimacy than a club that allows you to watch? Who better to help me than the owner himself?

On night one, my past comes roaring back, urging me to run like I always had before.

This time I ran into his arms.

With my fear still clinging to my skin, he brushed it away and made his own promise.

“I’ll teach you.”

His promise turns to friendship. A friendship turns to passion.

We didn’t know what to do with that passion— between the not-so-broken girl and the man who promised to never love again.

Daniel and I started because of a promise, and I hoped that we wouldn’t end because of one too.

EXCERPT

“Car trouble?”

A voice comes out of nowhere, startling me. I straighten and
smack my head into the hood.

“Crap,” I hiss out as I rub the sore spot.

“Sorry. I didn’t mean to scare you, gorgeous.”

If the accent weren’t a dead giveaway regarding the owner of
the voice, the nickname confirms it. Stepping back, my eyes lock onto
Anderson’s, a sexy smirk on his lips.

“What’s wrong with your car?”

“It wouldn’t start a few minutes ago. When it finally did,
it wouldn’t go over twenty-five miles an hour.”

He gestures toward the engine. “Mind if I take a look?”

“You know something about cars?”

“I can get by.”

I step away, allowing him to take a look under my hood.

The car’s hood. Not my hood.

He bends down, toying with different parts of the engine. My
heart rate increases as I watch him check the oil, grease getting on his hands.
There’s something oddly erotic about watching a man as handsome as Anderson
working on a car, the corded muscles in his forearms straining, his brow
creased in confusion.

His broad shoulders pull at the fabric of his shirt, and I’m
able to make out the defined muscles of his back. When his t-shirt lifts, it
reveals a sliver of olive-toned skin. I wonder if he has that little V at his
waist all women seem to lose their minds over. In my fantasy, he most certainly
does.

In my fantasy, I even lick the ridges of that V, all the way
to his—

“Nothing looks off,” he comments, facing me.

I inhale a sharp breath, his sudden movement taking me by
surprise.

“Is that right?”

“That’s right.” His voice oozes with sin as he advances
toward me.

With each step he takes, I take one in retreat, my heart
pounding in my chest.

When my back hits the side of a Jeep Wrangler parked a few
spots from mine, I pray the owner doesn’t choose this second to need his car.

“Nora…,” he exhales, angling closer.

I inhale his intoxicating scent, a combination of the ocean
and fresh rain. “Yes?”

“You…”

“Yes?”

He draws near, his lips skimming mine. “Need to move.”

His words snap me out of my trance.

“I need to get into the glove box.” He nods at the Jeep
behind me. “That’s my car.”

“Oh. Right.”

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 5 ⭐️ Review: Meghan Quinn’s The Change Up ✍🏻

Overall Grade: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

One of my favorite romance genres is sports romance. There is something about these muscley, hardworking athletes that create chemistry and strife in a way that hits me right in my gut. I’ve read some of Meghan Quinn’s other baseball players, but there was something about her Maddox Paige that piqued my curiosity so much that I NEEDED The Change Up. And in true Meghan Quinn form, she did NOT disappoint.

Now, to be fair, I am working slowly through Quinn’s booklist, so there is still much for me to read. Yet, out of the books I’ve read thus far, I think The Change Up is my favorite. There are so many reasons for this…

  1. Maddox Paige. This hero has so many qualities that I love in romance heroes. For one, he is grumpy. Set in his ways and wanting a more solitary life than most, Maddox gives you butterflies. He’s obviously handsome and $exual in a way that feels different from Quinn’s other heroes. He talks about being a $exual being, and Quinn doesn’t hold back with him. Some of Quinn’s other heroes have felt almost effeminate. That is NOT the case with Maddox Paige. Besides his grumpiness and sensualness, Maddox is complex. He’s layered in his depiction that he hides behind the wall of his grumpiness. Kinsley, Quinn’s heroine, is the key to the lock that is Maddox Paige. And man, do I LOVE heroes with this level of complexity. There is more to him, and as the story evolves, like an onion, Quinn, through her heroine, peels back those layers to find the heart of Maddox Paige. Heroes such as Maddox Paige are my favorite type of heroes.
  2. Kinsley. Oh my gosh. Kinsley is some of the comic relief of this story. Her heart is huge for the environment and animals and, well, Maddox. You can’t help but love her. As I’ve stated before, she is the key to unlock the best of Maddox. Like him, she too is very $exual, so their chemistry in the bedroom is some of the steamiest I’ve read in a Quinn book. In fact, it’s some of the steamiest I’ve read in a few weeks. These two are kindling to a fire, and their chemistry and burgeoning relationship drive you into their story until you find yourself emotionally entangled in their romance.
  3. The emotions of this story. The last third of the story found me with tears streaming down my face. There is an emotional gravitas to this romance that you don’t expect. Obviously, with a best friends to lovers trope, there is the potential for it, but Quinn invests us heavily in her characters by making them likable that when the difficulty of their relationship occurs, you can’t help but feel their pain. For me, when you emotionally connect me to your characters, it’s an instant 5-star rating.

I knew that I wanted to read this book, but I didn’t realize how much I would connect with Maddox and Kinsley’s story. Everything I love in a sports romance is found in The Change Up. It’s a multi-layered story about best friends realizing their feelings and exploring those deeper feelings. It’s about finding “your person” and having the tenacity to move beyond the fear of potentially losing them. So much is wonderful in Meghan Quinn’s The Change Up. If you’re a fan, this should be a must-read, If you’ve never read her books, today’s the perfect time to start with this book.

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 4 1/2 ⭐️ Review: Max Monroe’s Winning Hollywood’s Goodest Girl ✍🏻

Overall Grade: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ 1/2

What the world needs now is love….nope. What you need is Max Monroe’s newest book, Winning Hollywood’s Goodest Girl. Especially in our current climate when escapism seems like an everyday need, this book proffers that escape. One thing you can always count on with a Max Monroe book is the laughs. With a cavalcade of recurring characters (I see you Thatch and Cap) who tickle your funny bone, a book such as Winning Hollywood’s Goodest Girl allows you a respite from the stress of wanting to commit the homicide of your loved ones due to quarantine or the inanity of the talking heads of our media. This book has everything you love about a Max Monroe book with some surprises, so here goes. These are the many reasons WHY this book should be your read tonight:

  1. To date, Kline Brooks has owned my heart as Max Monroe’s perfect reflection of a book boyfriend. In the first book in their first billionaire series, Tapping the Billionaire, Kline sets the bar high for the rest of their heroes. Yes, I love the zaniness of Thatch and the pragmatism and neuroticism of Wes (the OG billionaires). The next series of billionaires are all charming like the OG guys, but the “come from out of nowhere” hero to upend Kline Brooks from his pedestal is the newest hero of WHGG, Harrison Hughes. Talk about a shock. Other than someone who teases Caplin Hawkins and a potential suitor to his sister (c’mon, we knew it was Theo the whole time), Harrison Hughes is a shocking discovery. He was so unassuming UNTIL Winning Hollywood’s Goodest Girl where he wooed the heck out of Raquel “Rocky.” If you love a hero who is self-reflective, insightful, intelligent, socially responsible in his ideologies, and empowering, then you will fall for Harrison. He is probably the one hero in the MM universe who isn’t easily dissuaded from his heroine. I won’t tell you what causes the upending of their burgeoning relationship (we know this happens in MM’s books), but it takes a major plan of deceit for this to occur. Until that point, Harrison shows us a secure, astute, emotionally mature hero. And I. AM. HERE. FOR. THAT. and I suspect you are too.
  2. Unlike other Max Monroe books, the real focus of this book is Raquel. This is, in my opinion, one of their most layered heroines. Through her evolution, we are treated to the message of this book which I think is finding your own power from within yourself. In other words, self-confidence and self-knowledge are necessary for living an abundant life. While Raquel seems to “have it all,” we find out quickly that her life is very one-note. When Harrison enters her life, he adds in color and depth. He challenges her, and he helps her see that she holds control of her life. As he supports and acknowledges her needs, Raquel is able to bloom and finally realize what she wants from life. And I’ll let you guess what that is. Max Monroe’s characterization of Raquel, their evolution of her character, is the “meat” of their story, and it holds important lessons for their readers. We don’t have to be Hollywood Superstar actresses to be reminded that there is “life” in the word living, and we control how much “life” we put in it.
  3. I’m pretty sure the “villain” of this story is the worst person in Max Monroe’s world of billionaires. I will NOT divulge this character, as you should read this book, but I can’t think of another character in their books who I hated more than this character. Max Monroe craft her in such a way that you almost love to hate her/him. Thankfully, there is retribution and justice meted out in the story, so all is set right in the end.
  4. A surprise baby story ALWAYS makes for an interesting romance. As Raquel navigates the twisted world of Hollywood complete with a doting baby daddy, you can’t help but laugh and cry in equal part about the challenges and steps of their story. I will say that this story is a) a bit slow to build and b) a serious slow-burn. Obviously, there is an early physical interaction, but it takes AWHILE for Raquel and Harrison to couple up. Max Monroe build the suspense of their relationship so slowly that you almost throw your Kindle at the wall waiting for their hero and heroine to “get their s%it together.” Yet, it’s that chemistry and tension that keeps you chained (this is good) to their story. Additionally, the delineation of their chapters in this story is interesting. I would love to pop into their minds a bit to understand their choices. However, even though those choices seem strange to this reader, they have written a story that feels complete in the end.

I can never get enough of Max Monroe’s storytelling. I had been looking forward to Winning Hollywood’s Goodest Girl because I needed levity during a time of COVID and racial unrest. It isn’t meant to be used to hide from these challenges; instead, it feels like a respite from the world for just a bit of time. Offering up a hero such as Harrison, you can’t help but wish you had someone like him in your corner right now because you would know that there is someone who can help you through the challenges of your day, someone who sees your needs and offers your help to meet them. This solace coupled with the hilarity of Raquel and Harrison’s story is the perfect read for today…and tomorrow. If you are like me and looking for some levity, Max Monroe’s Winning Hollywood’s Goodest Girl is the perfect medicine.

In love and romance,

Professor A

Winning Hollywood’s goodest girl is going to take everything I’ve got.

Winning Hollywood’s Goodest Girl, an all-new laugh-out-loud surprise baby rom com by New York Times bestselling author Max Monroe is available now!

WHGG Official cover 6x9

Raquel and Harrison sitting in a tree, K-I-S-S-I-N-G.

First comes love.

Then comes marriage.

Then comes a baby in the baby carriage.

That’s how her brother used to sing it when we were kids—a simple ploy to get under my skin and make me stick my fist in his face—but man oh man, did he get the order wrong.

One night of “kissing” in New York catapulted us straight to the pregnancy portion of the song—surprise!—and now I have to figure out how to carry out the whole melody in reverse.

A baby on the way first.

Then love and marriage?

It’s complicated on its best day.

But our situation is far more problematic than just a simple twist of nursery rhyme lyrics. Before our night together, Raquel Weaver was the best-known good girl in Hollywood—a twenty-nine-year-old sexpot virgin whom the world adored and watched like a hawk.

Obviously, the consequences of that kind of reputation don’t just go away. Add in pregnancy hormones, the media, a fake fiancé, and a selfish manager, and you have the short list of my problems.

As a thirty-four-year-old, successful CFO of a multibillion-dollar media conglomerate, I thought I would be able to handle anything show business could throw my way, but I’m starting to think I might be in over my head.

Good thing I’m all in.

Blurb:
BREAKING NEWS: The Bad Boy of Baseball, Maddox Paige, is totally and utterly whipped.

Okay, that might not be the headlines in the newspaper this morning, but it’s the reality of my current situation.

It all started a month ago when I received a call from my best friend, Kinsley. She got a new job in Chicago and needed a place to stay. I’ve known the girl since I was five, what harm would it be to have her stay at my place for a while?

Ha! Total disaster.

Now instead of going out every night with my teammates, I’m couch surfing and sketching endless photos of my best friend . . . but that’s the least of my concerns.

The disaster, you ask? I’m rapidly falling head over cleats in love with my best friend, my roommate, and my number one fan.

And she has no idea . . .

Prologue:
**MADDOX**

Have you ever said something you regret?

Something you haven’t forgotten about an hour later?

Something that sits with you, stews deep in your belly, and then seeps into your bones, burying itself so far into your marrow that all you can think about is the one thing you said . . . and how you wished you could take it back the minute it slipped past your lips?

That’s where I am.

Full of regret.

People always say, “Don’t regret anything. It’s what makes you who you are.” That was said in a whiney, nasally voice. Did you hear it?

Well, those people, the ones trying to spew rainbows and sunshine up your ass about blatant mistakes . . . yeah, they’re only saying that because they fuck up on a daily basis.

Think about it, what REAL person is okay with all their regrets? No one. There is always that one thing you did, that one time, that you will always, always, always think . . . “What if I’d done that differently?”

It keeps you up at night.

You wonder, what transformed, what took over my brain, to utter such words. To alter your life completely and send it down an entirely different course.

Yeah, my life has been fucking altered all right.

Everything was fine.

I was pitching one hell of a fucking season for the Rebels, my ride or die team. I was getting along with my teammates, even the infamous Cory Potter, who made a splash after last season. I’ll hand it to the man, he really is the boss. I was getting laid whenever I wanted, which is always a plus for a guy who has massive amounts of adrenaline pumping through him daily, especially on a pitching day. And there were no strings attached.

None.

Yeah, I might have a rotation of women I call, but any single player in the major leagues does. You need the outlet. Even the prestigious Cory Potter had some booty call numbers before he found Natalie.

I was living a great life, and then it all changed. And it changed fucking fast.

Before I knew it, I was staring into my fridge at dairy products not made from a cow, but rather from oat. What the fuck is that? Oat milk? Explain to me where an oat has a goddamn nipple.

My toothbrush is made from bamboo, which gives off a very woody, splintery taste, and I’ve been using toothpaste tablets instead of paste from a tube . . . because apparently, tubes suck up life in the landfill.

The eco-friendly toilet paper in my apartment disintegrates in my hand and is worthless, making bathroom breaks a fucking nightmare.

And there’s a goddamn three-legged dog in a suit and tie sitting on my couch that goes by the name Herman, or Hermy for short.

I don’t have any privacy, I don’t even remember what meat tastes like anymore, and “Hermy” has a goddamn staring problem. And the three-legged motherfucker, yeah, he’s stealthy. I find him waiting for me outside the shower . . . staring.

When I wake up . . . staring.

When I’m trying to make a goddamn tempeh sandwich . . . staring.

Every time I tell him to “get a life” or to “fuck off” or for the love of Christ “get a new hobby”, he doesn’t even bat an eyelash.

He just stares!

I can’t fucking take it anymore.

I’m losing my goddamn mind and I don’t know . . . maybe it’s because I haven’t had sex in what feels like forever, or because my burgers are now made of imposter “meat”, or maybe because I’m forced to do things I don’t want to do. Either way, something needs to give, because I’m pretty sure from all the vegan shit I’ve been eating, my armpits are just about ready to spring their own mung beans.

Christ.

One phone call.

That’s all it took.

One fucking phone call from a person I cannot say no to, a person who will forever and always be . . . my insanely beautiful and free-spirited best friend.

Did you ever hear the joke about the guy whose wife cheated on him with his best friend? So he quit his job, moved into his parents’ basement, and gained fifty pounds?

Four years later, I’m back with a dream job, a killer apartment, and a set of abs that are better than ever.

Excerpt

Oh, for fuck’s sake. Am I a man or not?

Here goes fucking nothing.

Take a risk, my ass. I’d fucking show Casey and Blake a damn risk.

I marched down to where she was sitting. “Hi, I’m Shane.”

She looked shocked, maybe a little startled by my approach—and rightly so. I’d stalked over like the fucking Terminator, all amped up from my private pep talk.

“The bartender, Chris, said you’re new in town, and it’s your first time here.”

Her sparkling blue eyes stood out against her makeup, and now—standing close to her—I could smell her perfume. A subtle and warm scent that made me want to lean in.

What the fuck had I been thinking?

To put it mildly, she was out of my league, but hey… Risks, right?

“If you’re dining alone, would you mind if I offer a suggestion from the menu?”

“I was only looking it over out of curiosity. I really just came in for a drink or two.” She folded it and placed it on the wooden top in front of her.

Goddamn, that cleavage.

“Oh. Yeah. Okay. Well, then…uh…let me get one for you.” I might have strutted over like the Terminator, but I was fumbling over my words like Barney Fife and beginning to sweat like a Crossfitter.

Her brows bunched. “Um, you really don’t have to do that.”

“Please. After the day I’ve had, I’ll actually have one with you.” I swiped at the back of my neck. “The drinks are good here. Very cold. Wet.” Jesus fucking Christ, Shane. Wet!? “Um. Alcoholic, if that’s what you’re into.” I waved Chris—and his bigger-than-life shit-eating grin—down to us.

“Find something you’d like?” he asked her.

“I’ll just have a Titos and cranberry,” she answered. “I hear they’re very cold and wet here.”

Chris looked at me disappointedly, probably guessing at how badly I’d botched this introduction. He wasn’t wrong, but she hadn’t told me to fuck off yet.

Yet.

“And I’ll take a Honeybee Brown,” I added.

He spun on his heel, shocked. “Really?”

I shrugged and shot daggers at him. “Really. A pint, please.”

“A cold, wet one too, eh? Okay, man. Coming right up.” He made our drinks and then about a dozen more for the servers who were keeping him busy.

“Thanks for the drink,” she said, clinking our glasses together, her eyes never quite meeting mine.

“Yeah. Sure. No problem.” I followed her lead and took a sip.

“So, do you come here a lot, Shane?”

My name on her lips had me clearing my throat.

“Yes,” replied our asshole bartender before I could answer.

“I live close,” I explained, and she nodded in understanding. “So, where did you come to the Bay from?” I took another sip, realizing that counting the beer I’d had with Casey earlier and this one, I was nearing my only-a-few-drinks daily limit. So I’d be savoring the pint as long as she didn’t seem too put off by my dusty-ass small talk. Otherwise, I could chug it down and then be on my merry way, leaving her to enjoy her night without a divorced, practically fired dude bugging her.

“Atlanta,” she replied and swirled a piece of ice with the drink stirrer in her glass. Still no eye contact.

Small talk. I fumbled for more small talk.

“You have family here?”

“No, I’ve always wanted to get out of Georgia. So, when I landed a job out here, it seemed like a sign.”

Finally, her blue eyes met mine and… Fuck, if I could have just remembered to blink, I’d have been doing well. I feared if I broke the gaze for just a second, I’d never see that color again, because surely it was a mirage of some sort. Like a crystal-blue pool in a desert. The kind of trick eyes could only play on a man who hadn’t been laid in nearly half a decade.

She finished with, “I start on Monday. I guess fate is as good a time as any to take a risk.”

About Aly

Originally from Savannah, Georgia, USA Today bestselling author Aly Martinez now lives in South Carolina with her husband and four young children.

Never one to take herself too seriously, she enjoys cheap wine, mystery leggings, and olives. It should be known, however, that she hates pizza and ice cream, almost as much as writing her bio in the third person.

She passes what little free time she has reading anything and everything she can get her hands on, preferably with a super-sized tumbler of wine by her side.

About M. Mabie

Mabie lives in Illinois with her husband. She writes everything from steamy romantic comedies to angst-filled, pull your hair out drama. She enjoys it all. With her unconventional love stories, she tries to embody “real-life romance.”

She cares about politics, but will not discuss them in public. She uses the same fork at every meal, watches Wayne’s World while cleaning, and lets her dog sleep on her head. She has always been a writer. In fact, she was born with a pen in her hand, which almost never happens. Almost.

Mabie usually doesn’t speak in third-person. She promises.

✍🏻 WWW Wednesday ✍🏻

Every Wednesday, I’ve been curious about WWW Wednesday, as it has been presented to me via kayla@kaylawordsmithy. Since I’m always promoting and adding reviews here, I figured it was time to hop on this bus and take it for a ride. So here goes…my first official WWW Wednesday. WWW Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Sam from Taking on a World of Words. The three questions to answer are:

1. What are you currently reading?
2. What did you recently finish reading?
3. What do you think you’ll read next?

What are you currently reading?

This is an ARC that is releasing next Monday, February 15th. This will be my second book by Tijan, and I’m excited. I am always intrigued with a bully romance because it seems so wrong in many ways BUT the hero of the bully romance usually undergoes one of the biggest transformations. I just started it this morning, so we will see where this goes.

What did you recently finish reading?

Cocky Bastard is quintessential Penelope Ward and Vi Keeland. There is a light-hearted meet-cute. The hero and heroine (in this book an uptight roadtripper and a “cocky” handsome Australian biker) start to fall for each other after some initial fireworks. Then, it all falls apart because there is some secret that, usually, the hero is hiding. I started it as an audiobook and quickly became too impatient and finished it as an e-book. This book has inspired a community of authors to write books within this universe. I will be reading an ARC of Rebecca Jenshak’s Jilted Jock (oh, how I love a sports romance) that exists in this world.

Tough Road is a quick novella, a start to a new series for Elizabeth SaFleur. I loved her Elite Doms of Washington series (YUMMM!), and I knew I had to read this one. It’s set in a burlesque-ish club in B-more, Maryland. The club hosts ex-cons as its employees. I gobbled it overnight, and I’m sure I’ll keep reading the series.

Meghan Quinn’s The Change Up is releasing tomorrow. It’s a standalone that is part of a series. Maddox Paige, the hero, was HUNKY. The “bad boy” of baseball brings the steam with his best friend, Kinsley, is the requisite do-gooder, saving the earth and animals. From the start, these two struggle to remain best friends when they simply want more. Honestly, this is my fourth Meghan Quinn book, and I swear it was her dirtiest. Maddox Paige + a reverse Prince Albert + some vibrator action is WOW! This book also made me cry, which I adore.

What do you think you’ll read next?

Yup! These are all ARCs coming next week. The goal is finish them all by Monday! Cross your fingers that I don’t get sidetracked with “other” reading. I have this tendency to listen to audiobooks while I do computer work, drive, take showers, or walk. Then, I grow impatient waiting for the end and begin reading it via e-book. I might need to avoid audiobooks until after Monday!

✍🏻 Ready for the perfect summer read? Stacy Travis’s The Summer of Him, Part 1 of the Summer of Heat Duet, is releasing June 19th. Check out the cover! ✍🏻

Two strangers. One chance meeting. Infinite HEAT.

The Summer of Him, an all-new sexy, summer fling romance from Stacy Travis is coming June 19th, and we have the smoking hot cover!

TheSummerofHim-6x9ebook (1)

It was a universal law of bad breakups: don’t try to follow your ex-girlfriend to France, especially when the relationship ended badly. Especially when it was all your fault.

So I packed my bags and took our vacation alone, so I could be… alone. Alone in France. Solo. Single in a city built for love. Dining at a table for one. Empowered! And a little pathetic.

Then I met Chris.

He was a hot megawatt movie star used to the limelight and women lining up for him. And I didn’t recognize him because I don’t watch superhero movies. He seemed relieved and entirely charmed by that.

And I was done in by him—the dark swoony eyes, his unabashed laugh and the cravings he ignited with only a look.

I knew superheroes weren’t real, but Chris sure was. We only gave each other two weeks. Then real life would kick in.

But was two weeks enough when it might be love?

Meet Stacy

It’s a rough world out there, and we all sometimes need a good, romantic beach read, even if we can’t make it to the beach. I’ve spent many lazy days walking the streets of Paris and other gorgeous European cities, and if I’m doing it right, I’m bringing you a dash of romance and a vacay fantasy.

I can’t sit still, so when I’m not hiking, biking or running, I’m playing a very average game of tennis. Background music for writing undoubtedly features some U2, Lizzo, Billy Joel, Pink, Taylor Swift, and Led Zeppelin. Not necessarily in that order. And if I could only eat one food group, it would be cheese. Or wine. Or bread. Are those food groups? Whatever.
