always crew cover

For the longest time, I was Bren Monroe.
I lived in Roussou, California.
I had no parents, no brother, but I had a crew.

Then things started to change.
I never planned for any of it.
I didn’t think I’d fall in love.
I didn’t think I’d have a relationship with my brother again.
I didn’t think that he’d come back.

Now I’m in Cain.
My crew is in college.
They’re growing, going through their own things.
And here I am, figuring out my life.

There’s always hurdles and obstacles to overcome.
That was never my hardship.
That was my regular.
But living? Being content? Being happy?
Those were my challenges now.

Everything was going well…
Until it wasn’t. Again.

A/N: Always Crew is the conclusion of the Crew Series, and a 106k novel.

Temptation on Ocean Drive, a heart-stirring novel of unrequited love and second chances by New York Times bestselling author Jennifer Probst is live!

Young widow Bella Sunshine-Caldwell is focused only on raising her daughter and running the family business, Sunshine Bridal. There’s no time for romance—especially with her fellow wedding planner, Gabe, whom she’s growing increasingly attracted to. He’s too enterprising to stay in Cape May for long, anyway. And too tall, dark, and handsome to be anything but a heartbreaker.

Every woman in town has her sights on Gabe Garcia. The only woman he has eyes for doesn’t seem interested. All he wants is to fall in love, be a father, and settle down. As he and Bella work together on a magical winter wedding, the distance between them closes, the nights grow warmer, and Bella might be seeing Gabe for who he really is: a man worth the effort.

But all it takes is a single rumor for these two hearts’ fragile love story to shatter. And now the happy ending Bella and Gabe hoped for is something they’re going to have to fight for.

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 5 ⭐️ Review: Laurelin Paige’s novella, Slash ✍🏻

Overall Grade: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

I often wonder how writers can say so much in the limited pages of a novella. Take one look at Laurelin Paige’s newest offering, Slash, and you realize it’s a master class in the form, much like the course taught within her story. Page after page, you find the heartrending, complicated story of Camila Fasbender, the sister of Edward Fasbender, Paige’s hero in her Slay series. The profession of truth that litters the pages of Slash overwhelms you in a way that feels both traumatic and essential. If I could give this novella a different title, it would be “The Persistence of Patience.” In that patience, Paige elaborates on some essential truths about life.

What I know from reading Laurelin Paige’s booklist is her ability to create these alpha men who consume their heroines. Donovan Kincaid is still my FAVORITE alpha hero in all of romancelandia. Yet, her hero in Slash is nuanced. It could be that we aren’t treated to his point of view in Slash. Quite honestly, it doesn’t feel necessary. What you learn quickly from this story is the erotic nature of patience. Hendrix Reid’s capacity for waiting is his romantic superpower. Paige has crafted him with equal amounts of empathy, persistence, and intuition. These qualities might seem to emasculate him; they don’t. Instead, they match brilliantly with her heroine who requires the capacity of these qualities.

Camila’s characterization is profound. Her being epitomizes trauma. And it feels necessary to read her story. The messages of Paige’s Slash reside in Camila’s portrayal. How do we live an abundant life after surviving it for so long? How do we become vulnerable so that we can be “seen” in our totality? How do we honor both the small and big moments of our life? How do we see our scars as more than their trauma? Over and over again, Paige’s articulation of Camila’s pain resonates and pushes against the scars of her readers, and it makes for a beautifully wrought, intentionally drawn story of healing. In her afterword, Paige explains that parts of Camila’s story didn’t need to be told in the pages of her novella, and I agree because the depth and gravity of Camila in this small space are pained enough that this shortened story form allows you, as the reader, to breathe through the difficulties of her story. Any longer, and I think it would feel like punishment, and her romance might be overpowered. Instead, the way that Hendrix loves Camila through her journey towards becoming vulnerable plays out exactly as it should. I found myself grabbed by Paige’s prose, thrown into Camila’s story, and upended by her truth. This is the art of Laurelin Paige’s Slash.

Paige says it best in her Author’s Note: “When the world feels fragile and broken and unsure, I needed to believe that fragile and broken and unsure is still beautiful.” That is the essence of Camila’s story. It is also the truth that love will see you through your pain. Paige’s Hendrix shows us how to love broken people, how to love humanity. Underscoring this axiom is the art of Paige’s writing. And one can’t help but wonder if Slash isn’t an apt representation of Paige’s own art, rife with anointed words, carefully composed characters, and a story that reminds us that we all bear some hurt and there is a fellowship in that knowledge. That it simply takes someone else “authentically see[ing]” us to be “free.”

Is Jack my real Romeo…or will this gorgeous football player only break my heart?

Not My Romeo, the all-new swoon-worthy contemporary sports romance with heart and heat from Wall Street Journal bestselling author Ilsa Madden-Mills is available now!

Read my 5 ⭐️ review HERE.

Madden-Mills - Not My Romeo - 29324 -CV-FT-V

We start off with a lie on Valentine’s Day.

My blind date isn’t the studious guy I expected: he’s a drop-dead gorgeous player with sinful amber eyes. Somehow we end up at his penthouse. I blame the gin and tonic.

The next day I learn he’s Jack Hawke—bad-boy professional quarterback with a murky past. The NDA he has me sign should be a warning that he isn’t a regular person. Please. I sign it Juliet Capulet, so goodbye, famous football player with abs of steel, and good luck tracking down this small-town librarian.

But Jack keeps showing up in places I least expect him. Just when I’m sure he’s gone, he waltzes into my community theater and wins the part of Romeo to my Juliet. How’s a plain, mostly innocent girl like me supposed to resist a man like him?

Is Jack my real Romeo…or will this gorgeous football player only break my heart?

Excerpt:

I pull my white cat-eye glasses out of my purse and slide them on for a better look. My heart flip-flops as butterflies take flight in my stomach. Oh heck no. That can’t be him. He’s . . . he’s . . . freaking gorgeous, and I don’t mean regular handsome but like a movie star: dark hair swept off his face, the strands wavy and unruly with copper highlights, soft and silky brushing against his cheeks, and too long for a newscaster, in my opinion—but what do I know? I don’t own a television.

He lifts his arm to shove his hair back, and my eyes pop at the tightly roped muscles of his forearm and biceps straining through the fabric, the impossibly broad shoulders.

Well, would you look at that.

And this has to be him, right?

I’m in the right restaurant. He’s alone. He’s wearing a blue shirt. He has dark hair. Odds point to yes. Usually the most simple explanation is exactly what it appears. Therefore, he must be my date.

The man in question turns to look out the window, tapping his fingers on the table impatiently, and I take in his profile. Long straight nose, full dark arching eyebrows, and a sharp, bladed jawline. Sensuous lips, the lower one decadently full. Almost wicked. He’s the kind of hot that draws your eyes over and over just to make sure it’s not a mirage. I knew guys like him at NYU—sexy, athletic gym types who played a sport. And those types never gave me a second look. I’d watch them work out while I fumbled my way around one of those god-awful butterfly machines, while beautiful, tall, svelte girls who weren’t sweating fawned over them, bringing them towels, water bottles, and sexy promises.

He takes a sip of an amber liquid, long tanned fingers grasping the fragile container as his eyes rove across the room. They prowl around the restaurant, as if he’s assessing every person in sight, and I feel the sizzle of him even from twenty feet away. Prickles of awareness skate down my spine. I’m the alpha, his body language yells. Come and challenge me.

His gaze drifts right over me without stopping.

Not surprised.

I duck back into the shadows.

Dang it. My hands clench. I wanted nice and nerdy, not this . . . sexy beast!

And judging by the scowl on his face, he’s grumpy. Life’s too short to be dour, Mister. And what is he annoyed about? I am here!

And he did see a picture of me. Topher said so.

Yeah, maybe he doesn’t really want to meet you.

Maybe he’s hoping you won’t show up.

I tap my foot. I should leave. Really.

The smells of Milano’s waft around me, spicy and tantalizing, and my stomach lets out an angry howl. I move from one foot to the next. Every place to eat between here and Daisy is going to be packed. I could always hit a drive-through on the way back home—but how pathetic is a Big Mac and fries on Valentine’s Day? Plus, I’ll have my entire nosy family to answer to tomorrow. They’ve built up this blind date so much: Oooooh, Elena has a date with a weatherman. Ask him if that’s a barometer in his pocket or if he’s just glad to see you.

I give myself a mental pep talk.

Grow some balls, Elena.

Sometimes you have to go out and take what you want.

So what if he’s hot enough to suck the dew off a rose.

You are hungry. Do it for the pasta.

He is your date. Go get ’em, girl.

I gather my resolve, point my little black pumps in his direction, and start marching.

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 5 ⭐️ Review: Melanie Harlow’s Drive Me Wild ✍🏻

Overall Grade: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

I’ve been trying to find the words to match the feelings that Melanie Harlow’s newest book (and series), Drive Me Wild, elicited in me. It’s so hard because her books are ebullient even when her hero and heroine’s journeys aren’t easy. There is a promise belying her stories that the world will be set straight once her characters reach inside themselves and reconcile within. And there is something heady in that truth.

This axiom entwines its way through Drive Me Wild. Interestingly enough, the person who must find peace isn’t the heroine, Blaire, the obvious choice based on Harlow’s blurb. The character with the greatest growth is her hero, Griffin, which was surprising as I began reading this book.

Everything I adore about Harlow’s former series, Cloverleigh Farms, is found in Drive Me Wild. I realized quickly that community is character in Harlow’s books. Just as we saw her former series, the people of Griffin’s town, Bellamy Creek. The members of Bellmany Creek function as the impetus for change in both Blair and Griffin. For Blair, she finds her peace there. For Griffin, he reconciles his past with his present. It’s a powerful truth that feels lost in our own society. How much of our own communities influence our identity? In Harlow’s books, the influence is great, and it humanizes her fictional characters.

The chemistry between Griffin and Blair is my favorite part of Drive Me Wild. For one, I am a sucker for a grumpy hero. Pair that type of hero with a heroine who is the light to his dark, and your story captures me. Griffin and Blair are light and dark throughout the entire story, and you ache for them to find their happy ending because they are the completion of each other into one entity. However, grumpy heroes begrudge a happy ending, so Harlow brilliantly keeps us suspended. You never quite know if they will earn that “happily-ever-after.”

And once again, Harlow’s storytelling is seamless. It flows; it engages the reader. As such, it’s an engaging read from the beginning to the end. I loved the characters, the plot, and the evolution of the story. There is humor and there are tears. In her journey to find an independent life, Blair is the most self-contained, while Griffin is challenged over and over again by her resiliency. I simply loved their spirit.

I am so thankful for books such as Melanie Harlow. They teach us a little about life, and our need to live abundantly. Love becomes the lesson of how to do it, and you can’t help but fall deeply into her stories. When life can sometimes look bleak and gray, honestly, a Melanie Harlow story such as Drive Me Wild will set you on a path towards happiness.

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 4 ⭐️ Review: Emily Goodwin’s Backup Plan ✍🏻

Overall Grade: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

If you read Rory and Dean’s story from Emily Goodwin’s Dawson family series, then you have the perfect set-up for her newest book, Backup Plan, book 1 of her new Silver Ridge series.. If you recall from Rory’s story, Rock Bottom, she has three rascally, over-protective brothers. In true Goodwin fashion, she has designed stories for Rory’s brothers. Backup Plan is her oldest brother, Mason’s story.

Mason is an anesthesiologist who lives in Chicago. He also lives with one regret: never telling his high school friend, Chloe, his feelings for her and letting her down by failing to protect her at a party in their college years. Years later, Chloe, a renowned author, is back in Silver Ridge to write the next book in her popular series. Needing the quietude of her former home, she decides to visit for a time to get centered. Unfortunately, she doesn’t realize that Mason, her high school/college crush is in town visiting family. The playboyish boy her broke her heart cannot win it…until he does. However, life steps in to complicate a burgeoning relationship.

What is the first truth you should know about Backup Plan? It ends on a cliffie! I didn’t realize that before entering the book, or I would have mentally and emotionally prepared myself for it. To be honest, I would have liked for Goodwin to complete their story in one book. There is quite a bit of repetition in this story in terms of the merry-go-round of Chloe and Mason’s spurned feelings. There are times when the story seemed to move forward. Then, it would return to a place where Mason and Chloe denied their feelings for each other.

Psychologically, I get it. Mason deeply hurt Chloe in college, and there is a need for restoration and reconciliation. That, to be honest, is the crux of Backup Plan. Goodwin uses this space to create a peace between Mason and Chloe, finally moving them in the direction of their former unrequited feelings. As the book ends, though, Goodwin upends their peace, and we are left to determine if these two can realize their happy ending. I hope they do. And given this is an Emily Goodwin book, I am sure they will. I’m just not sure what that future will look like.

Emily Goodwin’s talent lies in crafting large family dramas. Her newest book, Backup Plan (and its next book) remind us why we love to enter her books. The familial bond that underscores a steamy romance acts as the true binding between the reader and Goodwin’s characters. While I love Mason and Chloe together, Backup Plan’s cliffhanger nature along with the constant reticence of these two to acknowledge their feelings coupled with Mason’s inconsistency (I don’t love her/I love her) slowed the story down. Will I be reading the next book of this series? Of course. Goodwin’s ability to craft two characters who are so interesting you simply want more of their story will grab and pull me through the drama to come. If you love a contemporary romance grounded in the values of family, then you’ll want Emily Goodwin’s Silver Ridge series.

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 4 ⭐️ Review: Daniela Romero’s Wicked Devil ✍🏻

Overall Grade: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

I’m not sure why but I read Daniela Romero Wicked Devil over a week and a half ago, and I’m just now posting my review. Yet, the review wouldn’t come. It isn’t because I didn’t enjoy it. As a matter of fact, I could not put this book down. I have a tendency to read books simultaneously because I have several ARCs to read at any given point. I intended to read a little bit of Romero’s newest book and then read another ARC.  But once I started into Wicked Devil, Romero grabbed me instantly. How do I know that you, other readers, should be reading this book? The level of emotion evoked from Wicked Devil did me in.

Yes, this is a bully new adult romance, but I’ve read stories in this genre where the abuse against the heroine can feel overwhelming. That isn’t the case with Wicked Devil. It exists, for sure, but it never gets to the point where you feel uncomfortable. Romero writes her way through this genre with ease. You want to dislike her hero, Roman, for his hubris and mean-spirited ways, but he’s so emotionally entrapped by her heroine, Allie, that you almost feel sorry for him. He’s a difficult character, and he makes choices that eventually undermine him. Yet, he’s also complicated. His struggles lie completely in his emotions, and there is nothing better than a hero who is “all up in his feels.”

As a heroine, Allie, is pretty typical of a bully romance. To be honest, as a romance writer in this genre, I’m always curious how you write a character who bears and endures the heap of abuse leveled upon them. Quite frankly, Allie bears that weight. There is a moment in this book that I adore. I won’t divulge it, but her character is fully realized in that moment. The resilience of a character such as Allie illustrates the best parts of this genre (the internal strength of the heroine), and Romero developed her beautifully.

If I have any criticism about this book, it would be the last quarter of Romero’s story. Honestly, I thought there would be a second book given the pacing of her story. For me, the ending feels rushed, and there are “ends” that feel loose. For one, Allie’s relationship with her father feels unresolved and wrapped up too easily. Even more, there could have been more development before Allie and Roman’s happy ending.

I know there is more to Daniela Romero’s universe, the Devils of Sun Valley High, and maybe some of my questions will be answered in later books. Overall, though, this book made me cry like a baby. Romero has crafted Allie and Roman’s journey as a bind to your heart, and it feels important to read stories with strong Latinx characters.
