Samson’s knee brushes high up on my inner thigh and I’m glad he can’t see anything from my chin down, because my body is covered in chills right now.

“I didn’t think there were many people in the world like me,” he says.

“You think we’re alike?” I want to laugh at that comparison, but there’s not an ounce of humor in his expression.

“I believe we have a lot more in common than you think we do, Beyah.”

“You think you’re as alone in this world as I am?”

He folds his lips together and nods his head, and it’s the most honest thing I’ve ever seen. I never would have thought someone so well off could have a life as shitty as mine, but I can see it in the way he’s looking at me. Everything about him suddenly seems familiar to me.

My voice comes out in a whisper when I say, “When I first met you on that ferry, I could tell you were damaged.”

We watch each other for a moment and it’s almost like looking into a broken mirror. He leans in slowly, but not toward my mouth. He presses his lips against my shoulder, so gentle it feels like a graze.

Overall Grade: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

To be clear, for me, Kendall Ryan is a verified must-read. She holds a corner of the contemporary romance market, adding in sports romance and rom-com with it. When she announced Penthouse Prince, a second chance, single father, almost billionaire romance, I counted myself in for this book. Love second chance romance? ✓ Love single father? ✓ Love a $exy millionaire/billionaire real estate developer? ✓ All of these find purchase on my romance trope list. However, what you don’t quite realize about Ryan’s Penthouse Prince is the power of a heroine to impact the story. Corrigan and Lexington’s journey is the reason to read this book. 

Now, there are some things you should know about Ryan’s newest book. If you are looking for an alpha-male, work-a-holic hero in Lex, you won’t find that here. I went into this book with that expectation, and he is almost the furthest from it. If I had any criticism, it would be that. It wasn’t believable that Lex had been so successful because Ryan doesn’t make it seem like he is consumed with work. It’s important, and it’s possible that it characterized his life prior to his daughter. Instead, the hero that you read in Penthouse Player is a softie, a teddy bear of a dad who adores his daughter, Grier. To be honest, that’s for good reason. Beyond Corrigan and Lexington’s journey, Grier adds a softness and quirkiness to Ryan’s story. Since Grier is young and cute, you understand quickly why Lex’s life revolves around her instead of his business. However, if you are coming to Penthouse Player looking for an alpha-male, you will be disappointed. Instead, you will fall in love with Ryan’s Lex because his level of adoration towards his daughter and Corrigan is dreamy.

As Ryan’s blurb suggests, Lexington broke Corrigan’s heart. Ryan is careful in her construction of Corrigan’s journey. In many second chance romances, the author rushes the two back together. In Penthouse Player, Ryan navigates this tension for the right amount of time. It’s clear from their first meeting that feelings still exist, but Ryan allows Corrigan to sit in her heartbreak. I loved this because I’m not sure that Lex should have been given a second chance given his carelessness with Corrigan. Yet, the Lex of Ryan’s constructed present isn’t the immature boy of Corrigan’s past, and Ryan deftly makes that distinction for the reader. What you eventually receive through the course of Lex and Corrigan’s evolution is a sweet romance with the promise of many happily-ever-afters. 

If you’re like me and you love the tropes I’ve listed above, you will easily while away your time in Kendall Ryan’s Penthouse Prince. Lexington and Corrigan are the type of second chance romance couple that make contemporary romance a dream to read. With a dragon-slaying single dad, a precocious toddler, and a self-assured, insightful heroine, Kendall Ryan has once again hit it out of the park with Penthouse Player.

I sagged, hearing his plea.
