I needed the job at Eres Ranch in order to save up money for my sister or brother. I needed money to buy prenatal vitamins for Mama. Money to make sure her fridge was full. Money to make sure that somehow the baby could come into the world with a little bit more than I had.

Then, with the rest of the money, I’d buy a one-way ticket and leave Eres and never look back. Somehow, I’d convince Mama to come with me, too, with the new baby. The last thing she needed to do was raise a child with Charlie around.

Mama was right—we did have a roof over our heads because of Charlie. But just because someone gave you four walls to stay in didn’t mean they weren’t a prison. I couldn’t wait for the day that I collected enough money to get myself my own four walls. Those four walls would be filled with love, not threats. With happiness, not fear.

And the name Charlie Riley would be a distant memory.

Big Paw rubbed the back of his neck. “We were looking for ranch hands, not some girl who’s probably too afraid to get her hands dirty.”

“I’m not afraid of that at all. I’ll get down and dirty with the rest.”

“You have to be able to lift over sixty pounds.”

“I’ll lift seventy.”

He cocked an eyebrow and leaned forward. “You have to be here before the sun rises, and if you don’t finish the task, you stay after dusk, and there ain’t no overtime. You get paid by the daily tasks being completed, not by the hours you spend here. If you get done early, you can leave early. If you get done late, you’re stuck here late. Also, I don’t

believe in three strikes. I believe in one. Mess up, and you’re gone. You understand, girl?”

If anyone else called me “girl,” I’d slam my fist straight into their nose to show them just how much of a girl I was, but hearing it come from Big Paw wasn’t an insult. He called it as he saw it in a straightforward way. He’d call any man younger than him “boy,” too, because he could. I was sure people who identified differently would be offended by the title Big Paw would give them, but he was too old to bother correcting himself.

Old dog, new tricks and all.

“I understand.” I nodded. “I’ll be the hardest worker out there, I promise.”

He grumbled some more and rubbed his beard. “Fine, but don’t come complaining to me when you ruin your favorite pair of shoes in the pigpens. You report to the stables tomorrow at noon sharp for training with my grandson, Ian. He’ll be in charge of getting you up and running.”

I sat up a bit straighter as my stomach tightened. “Wait, Ian is training me?” I frowned. “Are you sure Marcus or James or someone can’t take me on?”

“No. Those boys are already training a few other ranch hands.” He raised his brow once more. “You aren’t already making yourself difficult, are you?”

I shook my head. “No, sir—er—Big Paw. Sorry. That is fine. Noon tomorrow. I’ll be there.”

The idea of being trained by Ian Parker made me want to gag. He was known as the playboy rock star of Eres. Ian had graduated three years before me, and I’d been the lucky girl with my locker right beside his during my freshman year. Which meant I’d had a front-and-center viewing of him swapping spit with whatever small-town groupie was wrapped around his pinkie at the time.

I cannot profess to be an authority in all things Meghan Quinn. I’ve recently started reading her stories, and I’ve fallen in deep. Eventually, after reading other ARCs and reviewing them, I WILL read her entire book list because she writes a brand of romance that both amuses and entertains me. Hidden in the lines of hilarious dialogue and sometimes absurd storylines lies a depth that surprises me every single time. Imagine taking a journey that feels light and happy. You knowingly run that journey because it makes you feel good. Then, there is a quick turn and that lightness and happiness is replaced with a knowingness about life: that life isn’t always easy and light and happy. Yet, it isn’t always bleak either. When you read a book such as Quinn’s, you’re reminded that life is made up of moments of light and dark. That your focus is key to determining if you will remain in the dark or choose the light. In Quinn’s novels, thankfully, the light always wins out. Her newest book, The Setup, illustrates this concept beautifully. What seemed like a light romp of romance for a cocky, yet empathic hero such as Lincoln and a fiery, insightful Indie became a master lesson in Quinn’s writing depth. Thus far, The Setup is my favorite Meghan Quinn romance.

What makes Meghan Quinn’s newest book a 5-star read?

1. For one, Quinn’s ability to shift between humor and gravity is impressive. I didn’t see the last third of her book coming. What began as a seemingly quick read turned into a story that I didn’t want to put down. I won’t tell you this book’s secrets, but you should know that this journey is not a straight one. However, that was my favorite part of this book. I loved that what I thought I was getting was replaced with what I needed to read. I love that storytelling surprise.
2. Quinn’s characterization of Lincoln and Indie is everything. I think the old adage “don’t judge a book by its cover” comes into play through the development of Lincoln. He is not like her other baseball heroes. Lincoln’s ability to empathize and “see” Indie is the reason you fall for him. He is not perfect in this, though. And this causes some of the strife of The Setup. I think it’s also fairly true to life. Additionally, I adored Indie. This is a woman who has set her course, and while she wants Lincoln permanently in her life in some form, she must also choose her own dreams. There are moments when you want to yell at her to be reasonable and just fall, but Quinn does a beautiful job in showing us her “whys.” Together, these two are fated, and you can’t help but hope for their happy ending. Quinn deftly invests you in her characters in The Setup.
3. The ancillary characters are romance gold. From Lincoln’s moms (oh, meddling moms are key to romance humor) to his roommates to Scarlett, Indie’s roommate, Quinn is able to weave in humor and wisdom when her characters need it. As I was reading the story, I found myself pining for the stories of Lincoln and Indie’s friends. I’m hoping we will read them in the future because Quinn has piqued my interest through their development. They made this story so full and yet wanting. As those voices quieted in the last third of the book, I found myself missing their influence in the lives of Quinn’s hero and heroine. That shows Quinn’s prowess at character development. 
4. The story of The Setup is such a keen reminder that life is not linear. It would have been easy for Quinn to write a very linear, typical romantic chronology. However, to be frank, her readers would have been bored. Instead, Quinn wrote the story that we all needed even though the light falls away at some point and the darkness prevails for a time. Thankfully, the dark is never bleak in a Quinn romance, so there is the reward of the perfect ending for Indie and Lincoln here. I honestly didn’t realize that the story Quinn wrote was the story I needed in the end. From start to finish, she had my heart. 

I think the crux of The Setup is a life’s journey. It isn’t straight, and it takes us down paths that we never expected for ourselves. However, if we are honest, and if we are open, we will find the path that is fit for us. This is definitely the case for Lincoln and Indie. And in the end, Quinn reminds us why her romances both engage and challenge our thinking about life. For me, The Setup was one of the best romances I read this month.

I’ve recently become the pawn of a meddling mom.

Yup, you read that right. A MEDDLING mom.

The bane of a son’s existence.

I know what you’re wondering . . . what did she do? Make me pick up my socks during summer break?

Ehhh, that was a little harsh. But before you go and put your judgy face on, you need to know the difference between a nagging mom and a meddling mom.

A nagging mom is one who storms into the living room while you’re trying to watch the series finale of Game of Thrones, complaining about the dishes in the sink you swore you’d take care of once you found out who took the throne.

Nag, nag, nag—part of the daily routine of the person who birthed you, or in this case, one of two moms who adopted me.

But a meddling mom, oh boy. They’re a fresh kind of hell wrapped up in high-waisted leggings and muted tunics. This isn’t some everyday mom who texts you GIFs of squirrels playing with a hula hoop. Nope, meddling moms have an agenda.

An agenda that they believe benefits their children. But it really benefits them . . . and only them.

In this case, my mom’s agenda: get Lincoln to fall in love.

I understand it’s not a crime for a mother to want her child to fall in love, but let me tell you. When she makes it her mission when you’re home from college, it should be classified as a misdemeanor.

That’s right, all freaking summer, my mom has made it her duty to set me up with girl after girl, all of whom she’s met in our hometown Kalamazoo, Michigan. I’d like to say I’m exaggerating that she made a list and set me up with every eligible girl—one by one—but I’m not.

I saw the Excel spreadsheet on her computer.

Girls who were highlighted in red were a no-go.

Girls in green still had a fighting chance.

Girls in yellow? Apparently, I had lukewarm interaction with them, but they showed promise.

Why is she so desperate for me to fall head over heels?

Can you believe she’s been spending time on the Internet, researching relationship statuses of major league baseball players? Well, she has. Too much time. And she said she didn’t want me to end up forty, about to retire, with nothing to say for my life other than that I was able to throw a ball off a mound.

She also wants a girl to fawn over.

When my mothers were adopting, Mom hoped for a girl, but Mama hoped for a boy. Don’t get me wrong, my mom loves me more than anything—hence the meddling and nagging—but she always wanted to do girly things with me, like have tea parties, get our toenails done, shit like that.

Side note: I’ve done the pedicure thing with her, and it’s not that bad.

But she wants a daughter, and apparently, a daughter-in-law is the next best thing.

Which brings me back to my summer of “not love.” I wanted nothing to do with these girls and after my mom’s eighth attempt to set me up—yes, eight—I told her enough was enough. I was done.

And thankfully she listened . . . until the last Saturday before I left for school.
