Have you ever entered a book and early on found yourself sitting on the edge of promise, waiting for it to unravel chapter by chapter, page by page? The gravity of the story feels as though it comes at you like the wave analogy mentioned in Jasinda Wilder’s newest book, The Cabin. When I read the blurb for this book before signing up for an ARC for an honest review, there was just something about it that spoke to me. Maybe it was because it sounded a bit like P.S. I Love You. Maybe it was because I was curious about this story. Prior to this book, I had never read Jasinda Wilder, and after reading The Cabin, I know I will be reading many, many more of their books. 

The Cabin is a beautifully wrought tale of loss and grief and learning to live again. In their end note, Jasinda Wilder notes that the story isn’t “autobiographical” which is shocking because the profundity that underscores the truth of this book feels real, feels elemental, feels lived in. Quite frankly, I have only words of praise for this book. It’s elegant in its presentation. Its structure feels provocative. The prose and style of this book feel ephemeral yet grounded. And the story, in 2020, just seems necessary. I don’t say this often, but this book has given me a huge book hangover because its truths filet your heart. The way in which Jasinda Wilder articulate ideas about grief and restoration gut you. I couldn’t stop my tears over their characters’ story. Just thinking about the nuances of them keeps me without words. 

I don’t want to give any story away. I don’t want to really talk about the characters because that gives the story away. My feelings for The Cabin are overwhelmed right now because this book is just so incredibly good. If you don’t do anything else right now, then download Jasinda Wilder’s The Cabin. But be prepared. This is an emotional experience; however, it’s such a beautifully appointed book that I want everyone to read it. From its style to its literary development to its story to its characterization, The Cabin is a literary juggernaut.

I want to say that I have all the words for Siobhan Davis’s Reforming Kent. But I’ll be honest, Davis has left me speechless with Kent’s story. I haven’t read all of the Kennedy Boys’ stories. I came into the series with Keanu’s story which feels like a perfect bookend to Kent’s story with Keaton’s in the middle. 

When I read Keanu’s story with Selena, I liked the story. For some reason, it read a little disjointed even though Serena’s story is an important one as it relates to the devastation of human trafficking. Watching them overcome Selena’s past provokes you to recognize the power the reader has to make a difference. And for me, it was a solid 4-star read. 

But Kent’s story. Quite honestly, it’s left me speechless and pretty emotional. There was something incredibly cohesive with Reforming Kent. Its heroine, Presley, is my favorite type of heroine. She’s someone who takes no <bleep> from her hero, and Kent, on the surface, is someone who requires rough handling. A hero whose former claim to fame is a playboy past, it makes sense that Presley would be reticent to give him anything. Yet, Presley eventually sees Kent when no one else does. This book has too many secrets that I can’t provide a lot of story points. Instead, what I will tell you is that this book will leave you captivated in its grasp. Each chapter reveals a little bit more of Kent and Presley’s story, and it’s spell-binding. This was a one-day binge read for me because Davis throws so much at her reader in one book. All of it, every single moment, works towards a message that is important. In fact, one of the things I liked about the books that I’ve read in this series is Davis’s insistence on using her romance to magnify a meaningful societal issue. And Reforming Kent is no different. 

If you’ve read this series and Kent has come off as aggressive, out of control, and irresponsible, that’s exactly as Davis intended. However, in the world of fiction, we all know that those characteristics along with substance dependency hide a multitude of hurt. That is all I will reveal about Kent’s story. Understand that there is much much more to Kent than those traits, and this book is so worthy of a read. 

From Chapter 1, Siobhan Davis’s Reforming Kent grabbed me. This book made me smile and it made me cry tears. My emotions ran the gamut as page after page reveals Presley and Kent’s story. If you do nothing else today, download this story and get lost in its pages. You won’t regret it. By my estimation, Siobhan Davis saved the best for last.
