✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 4 ⭐️ Review: Jolie Vines’s Cocky Kilt ✍🏻

Overall Grade:⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

Jolie Vines’s Cocky Kilt is the Scottish Highlander romance you need right now. What do you get when you mix an ambitious U.S. travel intern with a trip to Scotland? An opportunity for meeting the men of Scotland. This story is inspired by Vi Keeland and Penelope Ward’s Park Avenue Player where it involves Hailey from that book finding and eventually falling for Ewan, a Scottish Highlander. The travel company that Hailey works for is interested in Ewan’s family’s town as a possible destination for one of their tours. There to investigate it and meet with the manager of the town, Hailey finds Ewan in a local pub, not realizing that he is the son of the cantankerous manager. Instantly, Ewan and Hailey are drawn to each other and find themselves on the verge of a one-night stand when they realize each other’s respective roles, ending the chances of acting upon their unbridled chemistry. The next day, Hailey meets Ewan’s father who is angry about local tourism even though it will save their township, and their meeting unravels. Months later, Hailey and Ewan reunite when her travel company decides to look again at Ewan’s destination. Never forgetting each other, they decide to secretly fall into a relationship. However, will their secret be found out? How will Hailey and Ewan face the future together when he lives in Scotland and she lives in the U.S.? Those questions are answered within the $exy, swoony space of Vines’s Cocky Kilt

I will remind readers over and over again that Jolie Vines writes the best heroes. These are men who embody the Scottish Highlander, honor and family over everything else. With those qualities, they fall head over heels for their heroines, and Ewan is definitely more of this. His want for Hailey is palpable, and he tries everything to woo her to him. Their instant attraction and subsequent chemistry are fiery. As the reader, you want them to find a way to a future together, but Vines does a great job of building the anticipation of that end.

Hailey has an underlying story in this book. Her father hasn’t been the father figure she desired, and while she has seemingly accepted it, after a deeper dive into her character, you find that her inner little girl struggles with letting go of the dream of him. Thankfully, her uncle and aunt (the main characters of Park Avene Player) are all the family she needs, and the resolution of this aspect of her story is sweet. Even more, she is likable in her ambition for success. She has truly overcome her past to find success in her future.

If I had any criticism of Cocky Kilt, it would be its finish. For me, it felt rushed. Maybe this had more to do with the fact that Vines does such a great job of developing the tension of Ewan and Hailey’s coupling that I wanted her to take her time in developing their falling resolution. For me, it felt a bit rushed. However, when you consider any piece of writing, if that’s my only criticism, then that is minute in comparison to the heady journey of Vines’s Ewan and Hailey.

Once again, Jolie Vines captivates her reader in her creation of love in the Scottish Highlands. As she does so beautifully, time and time again, she has crafted a hero whom you can’t help but adore in Cocky Kilt. Meeting these men who are so staid and honorable makes reading her books a most delectable treat in a world that feels mad at times. Ewan and Hailey’s story will absolutely make you smile.

In love and romance,

The death of her parents brought us back to our hometown of Sunnyville six years ago. We reminisced and I was her shoulder to cry on. One thing led to another, giving each other a night I will never forget, and the bond that ended our friendship.

Now, another funeral brings me back home, and there she is, with her daughter. Sabrina is everything I want but can’t have. I want to talk to her about our awkward night and rectify what we once had.

But just when we get things right with us, complications arise, and outside forces threaten our lives.

Cherish Me, an all-new sexy and sweet Stark Ever After novella from New York Times bestselling author J. Kenner is available now!

Read my review here.

From New York Times and USA Today bestselling author J. Kenner comes a new story in her Stark Ever After series…

My life with Damien has always been magical, and never more so than during the holidays, a time for us to celebrate the hardships we’ve overcome and the incredible gift that is our family. Over the years, he has both protected and cherished me. He has made my life more rich and full than I could ever have imagined.

This year, he’s treating me and our daughters to a holiday in Manhattan. With parades and ice skating, toy displays and candies. And, most of all, with each other.

It’s a wonderful gift, a trip I will always cherish. But this year, I’m the one with the surprise. And I can’t wait to see the look of delight and awe when I finally share my secret with Damien.

But I’m terrified that when danger strikes, it will take a holiday miracle for me to even get the chance.

Excerpt

“We’re a lot alike, Stark. I think you know why.”
Damien moved to one of the equipment banks, pausing in front of a set of monitors with labels in multiple languages. He put his hand on the metal and felt the thrum of information flowing under his palm and through the electronic veins of the deceptively plain-looking metal boxes. The equipment like something he’d imagined as a child while curled up reading science fiction.
“I do,” he said slowly, his attention still on the equipment. “You chased your demons for years. Not because they were yours, but because they were Jane’s, too. You both needed that closure. And now—well, now you’re done.”
Dallas nodded. “Instead, I’m wallowing in the joys of marriage and fatherhood. Sound familiar? Plus, I get the occasional thrill by helping out the Feds or WORR,” he added, referring to the World Organization for Rescue and Rehabilitation, an above-board non-governmental agency with a close relationship with worldwide law enforcement. “Sometimes, I even help out a few less visible organizations. But my role is very behind the scenes,” Dallas added. “And I’m okay with that.”
Once again, he focused on Damien. “Like I said. I’m a lot like you.” His eyes narrowed. “Or maybe I’m wrong about that…?”
Damien frowned. Over the years he’d become skilled at keeping his feelings hidden, but he’d lost some of that ability recently. The fallout of opening up his world the way he had when he found Nikki. He’d let people get closer—not simply as colleagues, but as friends.
And that gave them power.
A few years ago, that would have bothered him. Now he studied it out of intellectual curiosity, not fear.
Slowly, he nodded. “You’re not wrong. I spent my life chasing the dream of making myself into more than what my father would have made of me. Of not letting anyone harness me the way he and my coach had tried to.”
“Chased the dream and caught it, I’d say.” Dallas shoved his hands into the pockets of his jeans. “I inherited my seed capital. You earned every penny you ever had.”
“Earned? Yes. But I also paid. In blood. In pain. The life I built was an escape pod, jettisoning me out of a past I hated and into a future that I’d created.” He waved a dismissive hand, as if signaling that it had all been easy. Maybe in some ways it had. But mostly he’d worked his ass off to get to the top of the mountain. Which begged the question of where one went after reaching the pinnacle.
He looked at his friend, somewhat amazed that he was having this conversation with anyone other than Nikki or Ryan Hunter, his closest friend and chief operative for all Stark International and Stark Security ventures. Or Jackson Steele, for that matter, the half-brother he hadn’t even known existed until a few years ago but now trusted completely.
He trusted Dallas just as much. And with that realization came the knowledge that Damien had loosened the once-tight grip he’d always kept on himself. He had Nikki to thank for that.
Hell, he had Nikki to thank for everything.

Title: Date Me Like You Mean It

Author: R.S. Grey

Genre: Rom-Com

About Dare Me Like You Mean It:

I’m good at hiding my feelings.

Having to pretend I’m not in love with my best friend?

Pfft. That’s child’s play.

Here’s how I do it: I avert my eyes when he walks out of his room, shirtless in all his toned glory. I squash the butterflies that fill my stomach every time he slowly unfurls a dimpled smile. And, most importantly, I keep an arsenal of “personal massagers” in my bedside drawer. Wink.

Not to brag, but Aiden Smith isn’t hard to resist if you’ve been doing it for as long as I have. In fact, we might have continued as best friends forever if not for the fact that I needed him to play the part of my fake boyfriend.

Date me like you mean it, I told him. Nudge nudge. C’mon, just go along with a little lie, help a girl out, and then we can all return to life as we know it.

Except he veered from the plan.

He crossed the line.

Flirting with me when no one else was around? Pinning me down and kissing me like that? Okay, how exactly is taking off my bra part of the ruse, Aiden?!

I’d ask him about it if I could, but well…things got ugly and we’re not best friends anymore.

In fact, we’re the exact opposite.

Now, I have to play nice even though I want to crush his heart in the palm of my hand.

Pretending not to love Aiden was the easy part.

Pretending not to hate him?

Well…I might need a little more practice.

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 4 ⭐️ Review: L.B. Dunbar’s Fight From The Heart ✍🏻

Overall Grade: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

To decide to revisit a series, one that you had put to bed, and revise it for consumption feels certainly like an act of bravery. As a relatively new L.B Dunbar reader, I had not originally read her Heart Collection, formerly the Sensations series, given the extensiveness of her book list. With Dunbar’s willingness to revise this series, I have found myself falling into this new series as easily as I’ve fallen into her Sexy Silver Foxes, The Silver Foxes of Blue Ridge, and SmartyPants Romance collections. What Dunbar brings to these series is her ability to craft heroes and heroines who feel a little bit broken at the beginning of the story, but find completion and restoration in the arms of their paramours. For this reader, that reads like catnip to an insatiable cat.

Thus far, with the Heart Collection, I have fallen in love with Jess and Emily, Tricia and Leon, and Ethan and Ella. Within their stories, there is a cohesion. Whether it feels like hate-to-love or opposites attracting, Dunbar has crafted stories in these heroes and heroines’ books that draw you in and urge you forward through the difficulties of their journeys. Fight from The Heart is the first book in the series that quite literally felt like a fight. I am a particular fan of a hero who struggles to know himself and who is broody and inconsistent in nature. I am also a fan of a heroine who understands the hero’s temperament and challenges it as he learns himself. This is definitely the case with Pam and Jacob in Dunbar’s newest book. While Pam sees through Jacob’s pain, she struggles to understand it given his difficulty in expressing his feelings. As such, their journey is contentious and fraught because Jacob, a wordsmith by occupation, is unable to fully articulate his struggles in the presence of Pam. Normally, I love this type of journey. It makes the story compelling and fiery. Yet, with this book, I struggled.

There is distinct chemistry between Pam and Jacob. Anyone who read Look with Your Heart, Ethan and Ella’s story, noted Pam and Jacob’s chemistry quickly, and it feeds a want for Fight from The Heart. I know I was anticipatory for their story. Yet, Jacob as a hero is frustrating. He is a dark hero, one suffering from alcoholism and guilt, and it takes much of this story for him to hit rock bottom. During that time, one minute he wants Pam, she is his “angel”, his savior. In the very next moment, he can’t have her. This discord goes on for much of the story, and it creates an uneveness that slows down Dunbar’s narrative. Jacob’s epiphany takes longer than I would have liked. He is definitely the darkest of the Heart Collection heroes which is appealing, as it counters the simplicity and idyllic nature of the small town romance. That, in and of itself, is appealing. I simply wanted Jacob to be a bit more consistent with his feelings. Instead, he felt bipolar.

Pam is stalwart. She’s the type of heroine you expect for a brooding hero such as Jacob, and she challenges him even though her self-doubt derails her at times. That being said, she was my favorite part of the book in her dedication to him and her eventual challenge to his existing pattern of living. She becomes the impetus for his change, and that is always a swoony element in romance.

Fight from The Heart is your prototypical small-town romance except, in the context of L.B. Dunbar’s Heart Collection, it is its darkest. There is an appeal in that as small towns aren’t always idyllic places. I think what I love most about this book and its predecessors is the underlying literary influences (this one feels a little Phantom of the Opera or Edgar Allen Poe flavored) and the revelation of her characters’ journeys towards absolution of their pasts. Thus far, that feels like the underlying force of this series. With one more book in the series to go, Fight from The Heart has cemented its place as the darkest of the series.

In love and romance,

Professor A

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 4 1/2 ⭐️ Review: J. Kenner’s Cherish Me ✍🏻

Overall Grade: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 1/2

You must know that, should J. Kenner release a new book in the Nikki and Damien Stark saga, this girl, this reader, is all in. It’s an immediate pre-order purchase, and I sign up for an ARC immediately because Nikki and Damien Stark are that addicting. J. Kenner writes stories in their world that engage you and keep you suspended on the edge of your seat from the suspense of the story, the sweetness of the relationship between them, between their friends and family, and between them and their children.

J. Kenner’s newest release, a novella entitled Cherish Me, is more of that. Set during Christmas time, Nikki, Damien, and their children set off for New York where they spend some time with Dallas and Jane, a couple from Kenner’s Stark Universe. While there, Damien suggests that Dallas joins his newly formed Stark Security. During that discussion, Dallas challenges Damien for the same, given that Damien feels as though he has achieved just about everything he can achieve. With that in his mind, Nikki and Damien are off for Manhattan for the night…alone. Nikki has planned a solitary time for them while their children stay behind with Dallas and Jane for night. Their night is meant to be spent at a newly rehabilitated boutique hotel, not under the Stark brand. What ends up happening during their stay will shock you.

Quite frankly, Cherish Me is Damien Stark meets Die Hard. This is a novella, so it is but a snippet of a night between Nikki and Damien. However, in true J. Kenner form, she engages you in their on-going story. Quite frankly, I don’t know how much more this couple can take, but Cherish Me is everything you love about their stories: fast-paced, full of action and suspense with a bit of steam on the side. This one also holds a big surprise.  As I was reading, I found myself smiling and gasping, worried for the end. However, Damien and Nikki are fated lovers, so, even though strife shades their life, they always end up with a happy ending.

If you want a quick read that will make you chuckle for its allusions to people’s favorite Christmas movie, and you love Nikki and Damien Stark as I do, then GRAB Cherish Me. It’s everything you adore about J. Kenner’s favorite couple.

In love and romance,

Professor A
