✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 4 ⭐️ Review: Kendall Ryan’s My Brother’s Roommate ✍🏻

Overall Grade: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

After Kendall Ryan’s The Boyfriend Effect, I was ready for My Brother’s Roommate because the most compelling person in that former book was Maren’s brother, Wolfie. As a reader of romance, my favorite iteration of hero is the grumpy one, the one who is sullen and changes moods on a dime. There is always something complex in their characterization whether they are an enemy to their heroines or the complexity is personally-motivated. In Ryan’s book, Wolfie’s story is an important one. There is a reason that Wolfie acts as he does, and it makes for a story that is compelling for its readers.

Add into My Brother’s Roommate a heroine whose strength lies in asking for what she wants, for having the tenacity to express her interests. Penelope is intelligent, talented, and insightful. As you read this book, the traditional roles of hero and heroine have been switched, and Ryan’s genderbending heroic archetypes invest you in her story.

This book makes for a perfect afternoon read. Ryan’s style is easy and draws you through Wolfie and Penelope’s tortured journey. Yet, even the angst of their story is minimized by the moments when everything is going well for them. The ending of My Brother’s Roommate is sweet, bringing rewards for Ryan’s Wolfie and Penelope as well as her reader.

However, this book isn’t without criticism. There are some actions Ryan might have undertaken to elevate this story. As I was anticipatory for Wolfie’s narrative, I was underwhelmed by it, which discouraged me. Here are some reasons why this isn’t a 5-star read for me.

*I won’t reveal Wolfie’s plotline, but Ryan has endeavored to challenge her readers through her characterization of him. As such, he requires more development than he is given. There are past familial relationship issues, namely with his father, and for the reader to truly feel the gravity of that, I would have developed flashbacks to underscore their fraught relationship. While she provides one specific moment, in my mind, it isn’t enough. Even more, the treatment of Wolfie’s issue is underwhelming, with Ryan glossing over it quickly. I think more care could have been taken to truly do his issue justice.

*Hayes and Maren are hardly in Wolfie’s story, which seems odd. Maren is his sister, and he has spent much of his life protecting her. I thought we should see more of them in this book. Even more, as Hayes is his best friend, it seems inconsistent that Wolfie wouldn’t have divulged his issue.

*Wolfie struggles with his relationship with Penelope under the guise of his friendship with her brother, Connor. Yet, he readily accepts the same situation in The Boyfriend Effect. This also seems inconsistent with the first book of the Frisky Business series and makes this plot point unbelievable.

*Wolfie’s insecurity about dating Penelope also is confusing. He is resolute that she could never be with someone who is “not good enough” for her, but it isn’t clear if that insecurity exists from his past or if this is grounded in some other reason. It is confusing within the context of the story building.

With all of that, though, Ryan takes care to show the importance of consent in a relationship. Even more, she illustrates workplace issues such as nepotism and gender bias in ways that mean to expose these problems. As romance writers such as Kendall Ryan incorporate these truths, she allows us to consider our own biases about these topics. My Brother’s Roommate is everything you love about Ryan’s books. If you read The Boyfriend Effect or have thought about reading it, then you will definitely find Wolfie and Penelope a treat and should read their story too.

My Brother’s Roommate

By Kendall Ryan

Release Day: December 1, 2020

About the Book

There are a few things you should know about my brother’s roommate.

Wolfie Cox is . . . complicated. Terminally sexy, and more importantly, he has an impressive stick lodged so far up his ass, he’s about as emotionally available as a chinchilla. Actually, that might be an insult to the chinchilla community.

So, naturally, I want to ride him like a bicycle.

He thinks I hate him. Mostly because I’ve led him to believe this. It’s easier than admitting the alternative.

And while Wolfie is about as soft and cuddly as a fork, I’m the opposite. A good girl. Reliable. Conscientious. Oh, and completely panicked about an upcoming work conference.

Wolfie’s usually allergic to altruism, so when my brother volun-tells him to help me out by escorting me to said conference where everyone else will have a plus-one . . . I say thanks, but no thanks. Surprisingly, Wolfie is unflinching about this. And that’s the story about how I got stuck in a hotel with my brother’s hot (grouchy) roommate.

Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

In all seriousness, this isn’t a game to me, and hormones aside, I need to impress my boss this week so the promotion I’ve worked hard for doesn’t get handed to his spineless nephew. But with Wolfie and me sharing a hotel bed, things get confusing quickly.

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 4 ⭐️ Review: Monica Murphy’s Wedding Date ✍🏻

Overall Grade: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

I have to admit that my foray into Monica Murphy’s Dating Series began with her second to the last book, Rate A Date. And to be honest, I thought it was decent. While I loved Eleanor and Mitch’s chemistry, I had some issues with the pacing of the story, and I ended it not thinking I’d go further. Until I read a chapter from her most recent book, Wedding Date. We met her hero, Theo, in Rate A Date, when Eleanor’s friend, Kelsey, talks them into a date with Paul and Theo. We find out quickly that Theo is still pining for his ex-fiancee, Jessica, who cheated on him before their scheduled wedding date. Not ready for a relationship, Theo becomes friends with Eleanor and Kelsie instead. (His friend, Paul, however, is awful, and thankfully, we never read him again).

In Wedding Date, Kelsey and Theo have continued their friendship, meeting weekly for lunches or at business functions. They enjoy each other’s company and have a general compatibility that makes their time together easy. Neither of them is interested in a relationship, or so they say. When Theo receives a wedding invitation to his ex’s wedding (to his cousin, with whom she cheated), Kelsey encourages Theo to go…with her as his “pretend” girlfriend. Wedding Date becomes this sweet story about their journey to that moment and so much more.

While I struggled with Rate A Date, for me, Wedding Date was a fresh ocean breeze. I began reading this book concurrently with a very serious, heavy romance, and it easily provided me with a respite from that book. Theo and Kelsey have the three qualities you love in a romantic comedy: solidarity, steaminess, and sweetness. From the start, it is clear that Theo and Kelsey are fated for each other. Their companionship leaves them contented, even when they note their chemistry. Murphy does a superb job in this story balancing their friendship with their attraction. For me, this is often an area of her stories where I struggle. These two succumb to their attraction at just the right moment, and while they wrestle with it initially, they learn fairly quickly to accept it. It is other aspects of the story that cause the tension of their journey. I loved this about Wedding Date

Additionally, the main word for this book is vulnerability. Kelsey struggles with sharing her private life. She’s had a difficult past, so her ability to expose herself to Theo and her larger girl group causes her problems. Similarly, given that Theo has been hurt, he too contends with accepting Kesley as a potential girlfriend. Murphy creates these sweet moments between them as they learn to become vulnerable with each other, and for me, it’s the best part of their story. It’s as though Murphy is pointing to the message of transparency in love for her readers.

Lastly, this is the last of Murphy’s Dating series, so this book wouldn’t be complete without the special group of women who support and love each other found in the other books of this series. There is so much beauty in their relationships, and Murphy illustrates that well in her epilogue for this book. If you have read this series thus far, then I know you will love the end of this book.

Monica Murphy has ended her Dating series with a beautiful sweet story that will steal your heart. If you love friends to lovers with a chemistry that flies off the page, then you will love Wedding Date. Theo and Kelsey’s story will leave you wanting just a little bit more of their journey.

✍🏻 Monica Murphy’s last book of her Dating series is LIVE. Run and grab Wedding Date, and fall hard for Kelsey and Theo. ✍🏻

Wedding Date by Monica Murphy is now live!

Kelsey Phillips is over the dating scene.

All that time and energy perfecting your profile and taking just the right picture and articulating exactly what you’re looking for, only to get the same sleazy propositions? No thanks. She’s doing just fine on her own, so there’s no point in a fruitless hunt for “the one” that doesn’t exist.

Besides, she already has the perfect man in her life. Theo is the type of friend who’s always there for a laugh, a hug, or a drink– and no propositions.

So when he somehow manages to agree to be a groomsman in his ex-fiance’s wedding to his cousin, the least Kelsey can do is be his date.

But why stop at doing the least?

Pretending to be in a relationship is easy. They already know everything about each other. And it sure isn’t hard to fake attraction to a guy as gorgeous as Theo. Soon enough, the only pretense left is that they haven’t fallen for each other for real… and the very small matter of the secret Kelsey’s been keeping. Can a fake relationship survive this real revelation?

The contract with Major League Soccer was supposed to help repair my damaged reputation.

Then I discovered that I’d made a deal with the devil: the player I’m supposed to recruit is none other than the bad boy, star Premier League footballer, Rush McKenzie.

British. Tattooed. Sexy. A man currently at the center of a huge scandal.

The goal? To convince him to stay in the States.

But what’s wrong with a little fun in the meantime? No strings. No sweet nothings. Just a way to pass the time while we’re both struggling to prove our true selves to the world.
If someone found out our relationship was anything more than professional, it would only serve to prove all our critics right.

I never should have agreed to take the fall.

But I did and I’m a man of my word.

Even if it means risking everything I’ve worked for.

The only bright side is Lennox Kincade.

Gorgeous. Defiant. Rumor-tainted. Totally off-limits.

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s More than 5 ⭐️ Review: Sierra Simone’s Door of Bruises ✍🏻

Overall Grade: More than 5 ⭐️

“He didn’t expect anything different, but it does hurt, to say goodbye. It does feel wrong in the sense that goodbyes often feel wrong. Especially permanent ones.”

The End. Finale. Fini. Sierra Simone’s provocative Door of Bruises brings its glorious goodbye. In its finish, the goodbye feels heavy, while also leaving you feeling replete, satiated. In words, Door of Bruises is erotic. Ephemeral. Exquisite. Existential. Epic. This book is gothic. It’s transcendental. It’s grave. It’s challenging. Sierra Simone is part mystic, part genius, part gifted storyteller. To try to describe this book and its predecessors instantly leave you bereft of words because it’s part romance, part paranormal, part gothic, and part mystical. I can’t put the story into words because it instantly reduces it and detracts from its power. While I read a lot, I feel like no one writes like Sierra Simone. Her ability to cast stories with a depth of feeling and cerebralism is astounding to me. Door of Bruises and its partners feel substantial in a way that most romances simply don’t. It’s tomes such as this Thornchapel series that I use as an ideal for romance. Sierra Simone’s depth of knowledge, her intellectualism, bleeds over the pages of this series. For some, that might be a turn-off. For this reader, I love the challenge of her words on the page. If I wanted to try and explain the nuances of Simone’s storytelling I would be at a loss for words, but for readers that should be seen as an opportunity to engage in the intellectualism of romance. To alleviate that struggle, Simone underpins the journey of her characters in Door of Bruises with some of the most erotic scenes in romance. While in other romances, it may read as bawdiness. In Sierra Simone’s Thornchapel series, it’s an opportunity to illustrate, what I think is a deeper message of this book and the series. Its main male protagonist, Auden, struggles with the duality of his character. He waffles between two senses of identity. This is further replicated in Rebecca, in St. Sebastian, and in the plan for closing the door. It’s as though Simone highlights a need for a multiplicity of meaning. Her characters, the Thornchapel 5, feel lost in the solutions of their parents, and it causes them to be trapped. Through the polyamorous connections, through the eventual solution to the closing of the door, through Auden’s acceptance of self, through Rebecca’s ability to forgive, Simone rights the world of Thornchapel, and in a way, is challenging her readers to view life in broader strokes, entertaining an open mind in viewing its challenges. Her heavily drawn story compels you to keep reading even though you’re wont to do so. I loved every page of this book, but I hated turning the page because the gravity of feeling lay heavy in my heart and my stomach. As she does so articulately in all of her stories, Sierra Simone challenges the ideal of the “happily ever after,” forcing you to see “happy” in a multitude of ways. All of this is wrapped up in Door of Bruises which is intelligent, exciting, carnal, and enlightening.

I know this review feels messy and inarticulate, but my mind is gone for Door of Bruises. While I am sad for this goodbye in all of its “wrong” feelings, I know that Sierra Simone has intentionally and brilliantly brought us to its end. There is so much more I could say about this book and the others in the series, but ultimately, what is important to note is Sierra Simone’s insistence in elevating this genre. In doing so, she challenges readers to see the possibilities for romance to be more, to do more. I have so many words, thoughts, and feelings for this book that simply cannot be contained in this review. Just read it. But be prepared to be overwhelmed by Sierra Simone’s sheer brilliance.

In love and romance,

Professor A

Blurb:
Twelve years ago, our fates were sealed with a kiss.

We are all, for better or worse, doomed to love each other until death do us part. My heart belongs to Proserpina and St. Sebastian—even if he no longer wants it. Even if she has left it behind to follow him.

Delphine’s fled back home, and Becket’s holy calling is in peril.

And now only Rebecca and I remain at Thornchapel to face the unknown.

The door is open. The door that shouldn’t exist; the door that people have died to close. I don’t feel like the lord of the manor…I don’t feel like a king or a wild god. I am a friend and a boyfriend and a brother—and a failure at being all of these things. But the door doesn’t care about my guilt. It only cares about the sacrifice I’ll make to close it.

As the bruising dark of Samhain approaches, so does the fate of our circle, of Thornchapel and the village and the valley beyond it. And I must don the crown, because one thing is still true, even if I must face it alone.

Here at Thornchapel, the kings must go to the door.

Here at Thornchapel, all kings must die.
