There’s no halftime in hockey, but maybe there’s one in love…

Drunk dialing your girlfriend to tell her that you didn’t really cheat is a bad idea–a lesson Seb Hunter learned the hard way. It was no surprise when she cut him completely out of her life. Now he’s finally moved on, and he’s looking forward to sophomore year at Moo U. Until his ex arrives on campus.

For goalie Faith Devereaux, cheating is a hard pass. She grew up knowing all too well how destructive infidelity can be. She’s gotten over Seb and picked the college of her dreams. The fact that he’s a student there will not be a problem. Hockey is her priority. Not guys, not dating, definitely not exes.

But when an exhibition game forces them into close proximity, it isn’t long before their old attraction flares. Regaining trust is hard, though, when the heart plays a good defensive game.

But when the goal is love, one more shot might be all they need.

Indi

I’m not gonna lie, being a twenty-one-year-old virgin is ridiculously embarrassing, bordering on pitiful. And if there’s anything I hate, it’s being pitied. So I’m getting my V-card punched this semester. It’s time to stop dreaming about being swept off my feet. Instead, I’m planning a down-and-dirty one-nighter with a certain hot hockey player I’ve been eyeing.

Hudson

As a top draft pick from a family of hockey royalty, I’m under so much pressure that I’m losing my edge on the ice. I need something to snap my brain out of this self-destructive stress-loop. Like a hot night of fun. That’s where Indi Briscoe from my photography class comes in. She’s flirtatious and funny one moment, sweetly shy the next. But then she wants me to pop her cherry.

Jesus.  Did I mention the pressure thing? Am I crazy for starting something with her? Or would I be a fool for saying no?

Warning: this standalone novel contains heat, heart, familial expectations, extreme milkshakes, and a hamster with deep thoughts.

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 4 ⭐️ Review: Tales of Darkness and Sin, an anthology of dark romance ✍🏻

Overall Grade: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

I came to the Tales of Darkness and Sin for stories written by some of my favorite authors such as Skye Warren, Ashley Jade, Parker S. Huntington, and more. Born partly from their participation in a Facebook group that deals in dark romance, this anthology runs the gamut of dark romance. From Jade West and Lucia Franco’s super smutty “Her Christmas Present, “ a teacher/student romance, to mafia romances to romances featuring auctions to one night stands turned more to sneak peeks of longer works, if you love dark romance, then this anthology is a must-read. Each turn of the page takes you deeper into the messed up workings of alpha males and their need to possess. Add in heroines who love a man’s darker side, and you find goosebumps woven up your arms. I think my favorite stories of the anthology are Ashley Jade and A. Zavarelli’s “Stalker,” a seriously messed up romance that devolves into a wicked happy ending, Parker S. Huntington and Giana Darling’s “Poisoned Hearts,” a mafia romance between star-crossed lovers with a bit of a twist of darkness to it, K. Webster and Sam Mariano’s “Mr. Foster,” an age-gap romance with an older “daddy” type hero whose interest in his best friend’s daughter feels so very naughty, and Pepper Winters’s “Forbidden Flaws,” a story that piqued my curiosity as there is definitely much much more to the story. By the end of the anthology, I had one-clicked Natasha Knight’s “With This Ring,” because the promise of the intrigue of that book captured my attention through its preview.

I know this book might seem jaded given its controversy, but, honestly, if you love dark romance, every story of this anthology is devourable. Given that the proceeds from it benefit a worthy cause, Tales of Darkness and Sin is a read that will both steam your glasses (or other things) and lead you down the hole of dark, delicious romance.

In love and romance,

He was also the person who could destroy my world with a single decision.

I walked into that bar looking for him.

He saw me. I saw him.

The chemistry sizzled between us, but no.

I hated Nate Monson.

I hated him with everything in me, even though my body did not.

It didn’t matter.

Nothing I wanted mattered.

He thought I wanted to get laid.

What I wanted was for him to disappear.

But first, I had to tell him that he had a daughter.

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 5 ⭐️ Review: Karla Sorensen’s Steal My Magnolia, the first SmartyPants Romance of the new season ✍🏻

Overall Grade: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

There are too many delicious things about Karla Sorenson’s newest SmartyPants Romance book, Steal My Magnolia

-The fact that the story is a premeditated slow burn seeps into you as Grady and Magnolia evolve. Sorensen’s pacing makes you salivate for their eventual coupledom. It becomes this compunction to keep reading because their journey draws you in

-The complexity of race discussion found in SMM reminds you of the gravity belying SPR stories. Packaged as “sweet and fun,” the truth of this book and its ilk is weightier than you initially believe.

-The idea behind self-sacrificing love in this book is its tempest. As Grady denies the gravity of his feelings for Magnolia, moments that Sorensen so perfectly crafted, you are reminded of why heroes like him make reading romance both special and challenging. It sometimes reminds you that loving someone from afar and forgoing acting on it because you want to protect them and put their needs first can only be found in fiction.

-That you can read a romance and feel replete without heavily erotic moments, that story and character development can be enough to heat your blood.

-The visceral feelings Sorensen so careful crafts with the complications between Grady, Grace, Magnolia, and Tucker. It shoots straight to your stomach with your investment in their happy ending.

-The ease of Sorensen’s style carries you through Grady and Magnolia’s journey. The witticisms, the residential truths of her characters, and the beauty of her prose make each page feel like essential reading.

-The carefully curated romantic gestures that build deeper and deeper into Steal My Magnolia that it sometimes hurts to read the next sentences.

Each of these qualities conspires to a truth, one that says “to thine own [heart] be true” no matter the consequences. The moments of Karla Sorensen’s Steal My Magnolia, the first book of this newest season of SmartyPants Romance, make it the perfect beginning to a fantastic array of stories. Grab this one NOW.

In love and romance,

✍🏻 Steal My Magnolia is FINALLY here, launching the next season of SmartyPants Romance. Get ready because Grady and Magnolia are going to steal your heart. ✍🏻

Steal My Magnolia is more than a love story. It’s a beautifully crafted journey of life full of obstacles but a journey worth the travel with the right person.” –Author Andrea Johnston

Steal My Magnolia, an all-new heartwarming small-town romance from Karla Sorensen, is now available in Kindle Unlimited!

Life lesson from Grady Buchanan: If you’re going to fall in love with the untouchable girl in town, don’t hire her as your only employee.

Even after he bungled the interview with Magnolia MacIntyre, he knew better than to hire her. The list of why it’s a bad idea is a long one.

Her father could ruin his fledgling business.

She is completely overqualified.

And he’s attracted to her.

What does Grady do? He offers her the job.

Magnolia knew better than to take it. Normally, she’d make the safe choice, and working for Grady is anything but.

He’s new in town–and entirely too charming.

Her dad will be furious.

She hates the outdoors and working for an outdoor adventure company is not exactly the right fit.

What does she do? She says yes on the spot.

Grady and Magnolia will have to prove to everyone in their life that they’re not crazy. And prove to each other that the list of why it’s a bad idea should be tossed out the window.

For these two opposites, sometimes doing the wrong thing is exactly right.

‘Steal My Magnolia’ is a full-length contemporary romance and can be read as a standalone. Book #3 in the Love At First Sight series, Green Valley Chronicles, Penny Reid Book Universe.

About Karla Sorensen

Karla Sorensen has been an avid reader her entire life, preferring stories with a happily-ever-after over just about any other kind. And considering she has an entire line item in her budget for books, she realized it might just be cheaper to write her own stories. It doesn’t take much to keep her happy…a book, a really big glass of wine, and at least thirty minutes of complete silence every day. She still keeps her toes in the world of health care marketing, where she made her living pre-babies. Now she stays home, writing and mommy-ing full time (this translates to almost every day being a ‘pajama day’ at the Sorensen household…don’t judge). She lives in West Michigan with her husband, two exceptionally adorable sons and big, shaggy rescue dog.

Blurb:
Told in alternating timelines, THE THINGS WE LEAVE UNFINISHED examines the risks we take for love, the scars too deep to heal, and the endings we can’t bring ourselves to see coming.

Twenty-eight-year-old Georgia Stanton has to start over after she gave up almost everything in a brutal divorce—the New York house, the friends, and her pride. Now back home at her late great-grandmother’s estate in Colorado, she finds herself face-to-face with Noah Harrison, the bestselling author of a million books where the cover is always people nearly kissing. He’s just as arrogant in person as in interviews, and she’ll be damned if the good-looking writer of love stories thinks he’s the one to finish her grandmother’s final novel…even if the publisher swears he’s the perfect fit.

Noah is at the pinnacle of his career. With book and movie deals galore, there isn’t much the “golden boy” of modern fiction hasn’t accomplished. But he can’t walk away from what might be the best book of the century—the one his idol, Scarlett Stanton, left unfinished. Coming up with a fitting ending for the legendary author is one thing, but dealing with her beautiful, stubborn, cynical great-granddaughter, Georgia, is quite another.

But as they read Scarlett’s words in both the manuscript and her box of letters, they start to realize why Scarlett never finished the book—it’s based on her real-life romance with a World War II pilot, and the ending isn’t a happy one. Georgia knows all too well that love never works out, and while the chemistry and connection between her and Noah is undeniable, she’s as determined as ever to learn from her great-grandmother’s mistakes—even if it means destroying Noah’s career.

Excerpt:
Jameson’s head whipped toward the entry, and his heart stopped.

Scarlett stood in the doorway, her jacket folded over an arm.

She looked like heaven.

Her glossy black hair was pinned back, barely brushing the collar of her uniform. Her cheeks were pink, her lips curved in a barely contained smile, and damn, he could see the blue of her eyes from here. She was here. At his base. In his rest room. She was here.

He was halfway across the room before he’d even thought to move, abandoning his beer on the nearest table as he went. A few short strides and he was home, sucking in his breath at the warmth of her skin as one of his hands cupped the back of her neck and the other palmed her waist.

“You’re here,” he whispered, awestruck as she smiled up at him. This wasn’t a dream. She was real.

“I’m here,” she answered just as softly.

His gaze dropped to her mouth, and his grip tightened at the hunger that threatened to consume him. He needed her kiss more than he needed his next breath, but he wasn’t about to do it here. Not in front of the jackass who’d implied he needed company.

“For how long?”

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 4 ⭐️ Review: P. Dangelico’s How to Save A Life ✍🏻

Overall Grade: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

I think in the shadow of COVID and political/racial unrest there is an opportunity to write about the consequences of trauma. As writers of romance, it seems important for them to interrogate it as they requisition love to entertain and also soothe the shattered nerves of their readers. Trauma stays with us; it can stymie personal growth or it can inspire us to do more, to be more. When you encounter P. Dangelico’s How to Save A Life, this truth becomes apparent through the journey of her hero and heroine, and it seems timely that their challenges are, quite frankly, our challenges. With the specter of COVID illnesses and deaths looming over us, what do we do? Do we embrace relationships and allow them to heal us as we mourn life as we once knew it? Or do we close ourselves off to the richness that life holds before us? P. Dangelico lays out her answer to this in a beautiful story that suggests how love can help us transcend the hurts of our past while transforming our future and ourselves.

Now, I must say that of the P. Dangelico books I’ve read thus far (I have more to read…and I plan to in the future), this book feels the messiest in its presentation. There were moments in the story that I felt there could have been a deeper examination of her hero’s background. Dangelico gives us nibbles of Jordan’s past, but, for this story to pack a greater wallop emotionally, I would have liked more of “him” in this story.

Instead, Riley becomes the primary voice of How to Save A Life with a few chapters of Jordan’s voice integrated. What this does is create an imbalance. The emotional investment lies with her heroine. And to be fair to Dangelico, this is enough to land an affecting punch. There are a multiplicity of traumas in Riley’s past along with a complicated friend relationship that causes you to feel her emotions poignantly. Riley takes up much of this story, but Jordan’s story feels just as essential. It’s there where I would have loved for Dangelico to give us more, to make us better understand the choices of his life so that his trauma of loss would be more profound. Without his emotional insight, his portion of the story feels flat, and I wanted to cry buckets over this book. But I didn’t. I felt a minutia of pain or loss from these two, but without Jordan’s emotional gravitas, the story didn’t realize its full potential in my opinion (take that for what it’s worth).

What I believe is most profound, though, is Dangelico’s insistence in interrogating the influence of trauma in people’s lives and their reactions. She adeptly sets up the dichotomy between these reactions and shows where more work should be done in her characters. That this story falls right now feels essential and necessary. Maybe Dangelico is working out her own response to the trauma of loss in our world, or maybe she’s challenging us to let go of our perceptions of how we should respond. What How to Save A Life does is offer a place where people should think, should challenge themselves as they look at the aftermath of a pandemic in our world or political and racial unrest. Whatever the trauma, P. Dangelico makes it very clear in her newest book that, ultimately, love is what will carry us, if we simply open our arms and allow it.

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 4 ⭐️ Review: Daniela Romero’s Savage Devil ✍🏻

Overall Grade: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

Daniela Romero’s Savage Devil continues the story of our three Devils of Sun Valley High with a focus, in this book, on Emilio, the biggest flirt of the three. While the first book of the series, Wicked Devil, really embraced the new adult bully romance, Savage Devil doesn’t aspire to those heights. If you are looking for more of the same, you won’t find it in this book as you did in Romero’s first book. Instead, what you will find is an interrogation of what becoming teen parents does to a relationship. You will find a young man in Emilio who is trying to understand himself as he navigates the surprise baby portion of this story, and you will find Bibiana, or Bibi, coming to terms with allowing him to walk with her during this experience. In Wicked Devil, the emotional gravitas of that story lay in the heroine overcoming a strained relationship with her biological father, the death of her mother, and a traumatic experience (which finds further development in Book 2, albeit a bit underwhelming in its resolution). In this book, the depth of emotion is established through Bibi coming to terms with the aftermath of Allie’s situation, along with balancing teen motherhood and its impact on her future. Allowing Emilio into their lives breeds trouble in ways that make your heart hurt especially as Emilio struggles with a maturity in the situation. For me, I preferred the first book in this series over this one, although I was engaged in Emilio and Bibi’s journey. But, for some reason, I didn’t feel it as distinctly as I did with Allie and Roman.

For one, Emilio’s character needs more development. He has insecurities about himself that aren’t fully explored. I can intuit that it’s related to his relationships with his parents, but honestly, I think Romero could have spent more time examining it for her readers. Without that emotional development, Emilio’s issues don’t have a depth to them that they should.

Additionally, Bibi and Emilio as a couple feels unevenly developed. I think we understand Bibi much more than we understand Emilio. This causes you to not believe Romero’s strife between the two. It’s hard to commit to your feelings about the couple because Bibi’s feelings and actions seem appropriate given their history, while Emilio’s seem immature.

As far as New Adult romance goes, Savage Devil is intriguing and does what it is intended to do: pull you further into Daniela Romero’s series. Its name, however, is a bit of a lie because this book didn’t feel savage in its articulation. It absolutely points to the struggles of teen parents, especially Latinx peoples. And Romero makes it clear the double-standard that teen moms endure over teen fathers. Yet, if it’s billed as a “bully romance” or something of that ilk, then I think it needed more of that savagery. It also needed us to find more investment in her hero. I still have questions after Savage Devil, but the promise of what’s to come is still greater than needing those answers.

In love and romance,
