✍🏻 The next Smartypants Romance book is LIVE. Mad about Ewe, the first book of its Common Threads series, is a sweet story about second chances at love. ✍🏻

Mad About Ewe, an all-new heartwarming second-chance romance from Susannah Nix, is LIVE EARLY on AppleBooks, Nook, Kobo, and GooglePlay!

Dawn Botstein is doing just fine after her divorce, thank you very much.

She’s got her yarn store to run, her house to herself for the first time in her life, and no use for men anymore. That is until the hottie silver fox who walks into her store turns out to be her old high school crush—the guy who rejected her 30 years ago.

No way is she going to lose her head over him this time, no matter how well he wears that salt-and-pepper lumberjack beard. Okay, so he’s the opposite of her ex in every way, and his attention gives her a thrill she thought she’d never feel again. She’s not risking her heart again.

Mike Pilota is having a mid-life crisis.

Only instead of buying a red sports car he can’t afford and dressing like a 25-year-old who’s time-traveled from the 1990s, he quit his job after his second divorce to move closer to his recently widowed mother.

He didn’t expect to run into Dawn again, but as soon as he lays eyes on her he’s utterly smitten. So he sets out to make up for past mistakes and prove he can be the kind of man she deserves.

But is it too late for second chances? Or will these two lonely hearts find a way back to each other?

‘Mad About Ewe’ is a full-length contemporary romance and can be read as a standalone. Book #1 in the Common Threads series, Seduction in the City World, Penny Reid Book Universe.

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 4 1/2 ⭐️ Review: Annabeth Albert’s Featherbed ✍🏻

Overall Grade: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ 1/2

Annabeth Albert’s Featherbed is the perfect start to the Vino & Veritas series in the Sarina Bowen World of True North universe. This series features MM and FF stories, thus adding a level of diversity to this particular universe. As its first book, Featherbed treats us to the story behind the man (and mother) responsible for opening and owning Vino and Veritas, a bookstore/coffee bar/wine bar. This business is a place where diversity is celebrated.

Harrison is a Manhattan transplant and everything you expect of an uptight, former lawyer, city transplant. He’s sophisticated and severe. The story begins when he accidentally receives a shipment of chicks. After some investigation, he determines that these chicks were meant to be delivered to Finn Barnes, the owner of a family farm, Puddlebrook Farms. On meeting, Finn and Harrison are attracted to each other; however, neither of them is interested in a relationship, but it doesn’t mean that they can’t explore something more casual. As the story progresses, what happens is they realize a growing need for the other. There are issues, though. Finn’s farm is his priority, while Harrison has a fear that keeps him from wanting more from Finn. At least, until he can no longer deny his growing interest in him.

What is most lovely about Featherbed is its introspection about the idea of living. In Finn and Harrison’s lives, they have made choices that have kept them closed off from living a full life, more specifically, a life of love. There are reasons which this book divulges that make sense to Albert’s heroes. These reasons make for the connection between the book’s ideas and its readers. We have all lived in fear, and that fear has kept us from making choices for deeper relationships with others or new jobs or new experiences. Albert deftly illustrates the danger of wrapping ourselves in that fear as a denial to living more abundantly. It’s an essential message in any book, as it’s a challenge to be open to new experiences and people.

Additionally, I am a massive fan of the opposites attracting trope. Finn and Harrison are so entirely different, but they challenge the other to be better. From the chemistry wrought through this type of coupling to the steam of the bedroom, Albert electrifies her story through Finn and Harrison’s undeniable attraction.

As my first Annabeth Albert story, Featherbed was a delight. Acting as the foundation for the Vino & Veritas series, this book has set the bar high for the undeniable attraction of future stories in this world. There are a vulnerability and sweetness to Albert’s Featherbed that will absolutely steal your heart.

In love and romance,

Professor A

Blurb:

When a bookworm on borrowed time meets a younger, free-spirited chicken farmer, sparks and feathers fly…
Harrison Phillip Fletcher, III isn’t supposed to be here. Not in Burlington, Vermont, not running Vino & Veritas, a quaint inclusive bookstore and wine bar, and definitely not still alive, at forty-two. Also not supposed to be here? An unexpected delivery of chickens.

Finn Barnes knows chickens. The burly organic farmer knows all about rare breed poultry, but dealing with a hot, older bookseller is an entirely different matter. City slicker types like Harrison never end up staying in Vermont for the long-term.

They should steer clear of each other. But the flare of attraction is mutual. And somehow amid book discussions and farm tours, they discover plenty in common. Now they’re stealing kisses in Finn’s barn, sneaking out like teens, and burning up the sheets.

What starts as a fling brings very real feelings for two lonely souls, but a future together seems as unlikely as chickens in a bookstore. Feathers may be flying, but learning to trust takes time neither may have. Can they take a leap of faith together before it’s too late?

Featherbed is a stand-alone novel in Sarina Bowen’s World of True North. This opposites-attract, age-gap romance features a low-angst, fluffy—and feathery—romp as a fish out of water discovers the home he never thought he’d find.

Excerpt

“What’s next?” Harrison was so serious that I wasn’t sure whether he meant us or the shelf project, but I couldn’t resist messing with him a little.

“Screwing,” I deadpanned.

Predictably, Harrison made a sputtering noise. “Pardon?”

“With a drill, Harry.” I held up the trusty cordless I’d retrieved. “With a drill.”

“No one calls me Harry.” His mouth pursed. I wanted to kiss it. Perversely, the more uptight he got, the more I wanted to unravel him.

“Not even your mom?” I found the correct drill bit for the project and slotted it in.

“Ha.” Harrison had locked his gaze on my hands in a way that made me both self-conscious and more than a little turned-on. “I call her Mom only because she dislikes the formality of Mother.”

“Whereas you love the formality. I get it. Harry.” I put deliberate emphasis on the nickname, so that I could categorize all the different shades of pink and purple he was turning. Besides, it was a good distraction from how his shrewd eyes made me feel.

“I said—”

“You’re fun to harass.” I grinned at him, which earned me an eye roll in return.

“I try. Now give me something to do.”

“Okay, okay. Back to work. You can help by measuring to mark each of the screw holes.”

“Why do construction terms always sound so suggestive?”

“Because you have a dirty mind, Harry.” I gave him an exaggerated leer.

“You better stop that.” He didn’t sound particularly convincing.

“Stop teasing or stop looking at you?” Laughing, I waggled the drill in his direction. “I’ll remind you that I’m the one holding power tools.”

“So you are.” Harrison kept holding my gaze, eyes soft and expectant behind his glasses, tongue darting out to lick at his lips. In that moment, he was infinitely appealing and nothing at all like Astin.

Maybe I’d been mistaken in thinking he was a branch of the same tree of rich dudes who had no issues taking what they wanted. Like him, Astin had favored designer clothing, pricey-looking watches, and the same luxury brand car, and had also dropped clues about inheritances. But unlike Astin, there was a certain humility to Harrison, and he didn’t try to tell me how to do my job.

Oh, Harrison was still a city slicker, and probably not sticking around, but he wasn’t an entitled asshole either. He wanted to kiss me. That want was all over his face, but so was his restraint. As with the woodworking, he’d let me lead. He’d wait for me to make my move and didn’t have a ready arsenal of slick lines. His uncertainty was perhaps the most charming thing about him.

And so, still meeting his eyes, I set the drill back down on the workbench. “No power tools now. You still want to shut me up?”

I stepped closer, in case he had any doubt as to my intent. He smelled good. Expensive, like someone had married delicate herbs and leather scents in an aftershave that probably cost more than a year’s supply of my soap.

“Yeah. I think I do.” His cultured voice had gone husky, but still contained that vulnerability I found so damn intoxicating.

“Show me.” Touching the sleeve of his waffle-knit sweater, I turned him toward me. There. I’d made my move. The next was his.

Excerpt

I fished for my keys in my little clutch, stomping my way up the stairs. He was still on the first step, his eyes burning a hole through my back. The one time he looked at me with anything but frost, and I was completely immune to it.  pushed the building entrance door open, ignoring his plea.

Funny, I’d always thought it’d feel divine to dismiss him the way he’d dismissed me. But right now, my feelings swirled among hurt, anger, and confusion. Triumph was nowhere in sight, and glee was miles away. I was almost past the threshold when his next words gave me pause.

“Too scared to give me ten minutes of your time?” he challenged, the smirk in his voice like a stab in my back. I froze. Now I recognized him. Cold, calculated. Playfully ruthless. “If you’re so over me and not at all tempted to be under me once we get upstairs, you can go back to your blissful, Chase-free existence after I say my piece, no?”

Scared? He thought I was scared? If I were any more immune to his charms at this point, I’d actively throw up at his sight.

I swiveled, jutting my hip out, a polite smile on my lips. “Cocky much?”

“Just enough to get your attention,” he deadpanned, looking awfully like a man who didn’t want to be here.

What is he doing here, anyway?

“Five minutes will do, and you better behave.” I pointed at him with my clutch.

“Cross my heart and hope to die.” He put a hand on his chest mockingly.

“At least our hopes are aligned.”

✍🏻 Fiona Cole’s Just for A Little While is a little forbidden, a little sexy, and it’s coming April 8th. Check out its cover and preorder it today! ✍🏻

Fiona Cole has revealed the cover for Just for a Little While!

Releasing: April 8, 2021

After a year of traveling abroad, my parents finally trap my free-spirit into college. Even worse, my dad’s former-stepbrother has a room with my name on it.

The only thing I remember about Uncle Willem is his boring button-down shirts and quiet demeanor.

Except the rugged man who opens his home to me—filling out his t-shirt better than any person should—is not the man I remember. Standing here drooling over his easy dimpled smile, I wonder if I really looked at him at all.

Because Willem is anything but boring and, based on the way his eyes linger on my ripped jeans and thin shirt, he is anything but bored by me.

Add in that he’s a professor at my college and my major went from ‘undecided’ to ‘him’. He tries to hold back, but I have other plans in mind.

College can’t start soon enough. I can’t wait to misbehave and get sent to the professor’s office.

One touch. One kiss. Each starts with a simple promise: Just for a little while.

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 4 1/2 ⭐️ Review: Allie Winters’s Under Pressure ✍🏻

Overall Grade: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ 1/2

One of the challenges facing college students is mental health. There is much being written about the need to improve the mental health of our college students. With Allie Winters’s Under Pressure, the hero and the heroine’s story elicits thoughts about overcoming mental health challenges brought on by anxiety and the impact of past trauma. When you enter this story, you are met with a hero with so much disdain for life that it seems unbelievable that he’ll ever find anything interesting about Winters’s heroine. Except that Winters’s heroine is extraordinary. Under Pressure utilizes the classic trope of opposites attracting with a grumpy, loner hero and a vibrant, intelligent heroine whose example challenges our hero to be better.

Under Pressure tells the story of two psychology students vying for the opportunity to intern in their university’s Stress Center. For each of them, this would be a perfect stepping stone to launch themselves into their grad programs after graduating. Mia, the heroine, notices the hero, Tyler, in a mutual class the semester before. She is drawn to his intellect and his voice. On meeting him face-to-face, she is also enamored with his eyes and his good looks. Unfortunately, Tyler is rude and only interested in school and a possible position in the Stress Center. When Dr. Pierce, the faculty member who oversees this opportunity, determines that Mia and Tyler should work together on their respective studies, merging their ideas, Mia and Tyler must determine if they want the opportunity or pass on it. Knowing that the experience would be an important one, they agree to work together, but there are complications from the start. For one, Tyler prefers working alone, and he now has to include Mia, and whether he wants to admit it or not, Tyler is drawn to her just as Mia is drawn to Tyler. As their experience progresses, things turn hot and heavy under the guise of friends with benefits as Tyler has no interest in girlfriends and relationships. Unfortunately for Tyler, Mia gets under his skin and everything becomes complicated.

Like the other Smartypants Romance books, Under Pressure inspired by one of Penny Reid’s worlds. Under Pressure is the first book of the newly created Lessons Learned series. Inspired by Reid’s Hypothesis series, the focus of this book, mental health, is grounded in a new adult world. As Tyler and Mia traverse their story, the reader is met with the challenges of anxiety and past traumas in the lives of the characters. As a response, Winters shows how one of them uses therapy and meditation to confront their mental health crisis while the other character tries to power through it to no avail. When that character finally embraces the need for help in overcoming their mental health challenges, the story becomes righted suggesting that Winters’s message focuses on the need for outside help to alleviate mental health issues.

This book has one of my favorite tropes: opposites attract. Especially in the case of Under Pressure, Tyler is such a difficult character to like as he struggles with maintaining anger and loneliness to handle life. When faced with a character like Mia who takes each challenge as it comes with grace and tenacity, there is no way that he can continue in his ways. Winters does a superb job in pacing out their journey, making us wait for Tyler to recognize a need to change. Winters deftly crafts their experience to both repel and attract the reader. There is just something special about Tyler and Mia together, and you can’t help but root for them to the very last page.

Allie Winters’s Under Pressure feels like an important book in the Smartypants Romance universe at a time when mental health challenges are a serious focus. To illustrate this message through the course of her story feels necessary. That message, however, never overpowers the romance of Tyler and Mia; instead, it highlights the capacity of love to support us when we don’t feel very together. I think that’s the big takeaway from Under Pressure, and it makes for a compelling read.

In love and romance,

Excerpt

“You wanna know what I think?” Hound asked.
Jagger tipped his head back to look at his dad.
Then Hound told him what he thought.
“I think you’re in. And I think if you walk away from this girl, you’ll regret it for the rest of your life. And I think I’m here to tell you that because you need another voice sayin’ something you already know.”
“That’s what I think too,” Jagger admitted.
Hound nodded, and again he did it only once.
“Then I’ll look forward to havin’ her over to dinner and celebrating with your mom that she can finally stop worrying about you because she’s feelin’ you shoulda been done sowin’ those oats about five years ago.”
Jagger grinned at him.
His mother had never been at one with the way Jag tackled life, considering he’d always been about wresting as much of it as he could for his own.
Dutch was the quiet, responsible one.
Jag was…
Not.
Hound reached out and caught Jag by the neck, gave him a squeeze, a shove, then let him go.
And Jagger felt better.
“So, what’s her name?” Hound asked.
“Archie.”
Hound looked him right in the eye.
Then he burst out laughing.
He settled back into the bar, his fingers cradling his brew, and he was shaking his head.
“Archie and Georgie. Fuck,” Hound said.
Jag hadn’t thought of that, both him and Dutch finding girls with boys’ names.
He grinned, leaned back into the bar himself, and replied, “She doesn’t have red hair and freckles, and I seriously doubt her best friend’s name is Jughead, but I think she might have a bit of tomboy in her.”
“Well, son,” Hound picked up his beer and tipped it toward Jag, “you’re about to find out.”
Jag grabbed his beer and tapped necks with Hound.
And he was grinning again.
Because Hound was right.
He was.

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 4 ⭐️ Review: M.E. Carter’s Weights of Wrath ✍🏻

Overall Grade: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

M.E. Carter’s Weights of Wrath is the fourth book of the Cipher Office series under the Smartypants Romance world. This book is M.E. Carter’s third book. Like the first two books, this book is set in an exclusive gym called Weight Expectations. In book one, we met Carlos and Rian; in book two, we met Abel and Elliott, all characters who either frequent as customers or work at the gym. Prior to Weights of Wrath, we’ve met Carter’s hero, Joey. He’s a bit of a player and a pretty happy-go-lucky kind of fellow. He is also great friends with Abel. In book 2, we find out that he receives a text that tells him he might be a father. In Weights of Wrath, Carter introduces us to Joey’s baby mama, Rosalind aka Cherise, a stripper who engages in a one-night stand that ends in a surprise baby and Abel’s cousin. I think one of the things I’ve struggled with in Cutie and the Beast (the second book – Abel and Elliott) and this newest one is missing chemistry between her heroes and heroines. What happens is the greater motif or message of the story causes the romance to become tangential. On a scale of 5, the steam level is 1.5 to 2.0. Even then, the characters talk about their $ex life as a mediocre experience meant to sate the fire of their hormones. It’s so strange to read a romance that characterizes bedroom experiences in that manner.

Even more, Rosalind has an issue with being likable. If you’ve had children, you can easily commiserate with her. This book is really about the idea of parenthood and motherhood. Carter spends much of this book reminding us that Joey and Rosalind feel ill-equipped to care for a child. Rosalind’s experience is more poignant because she’s initially the antithesis of motherhood. However, as the story progresses and Rosalind experiences wisdom from both Elliott and Dinah, the caregiver team of Weight Expectations, the ultimate message about motherhood is divulged: what’s ever right for your child is “right.” It’s a good message, one that new moms should hear as they encounter the experiences of other mothers. However, in the scope of a romance, it overwhelms Joey and Rosalind’s journey. There is a mediocrity inherent to Weights of Wrath where nothing feels emotionally driven or empowering; it’s simply a tale about the struggles of becoming first-time parents when you’ve met each other through a one-night stand. This is probably realistic, but I think readers want a bit more fiction with their realism, and I’m not sure that M.E. Carter has done it here. As a hero, Joey is sweet and compassionate, if not a bit of a puppy dog, always happy, always amenable. It pairs well with Rosalind who is a firecracker with a bent towards pessimism. It is pure opposites attract without the delicious emotional tension of that trope.

Let me be clear: I didn’t put this book down, but it didn’t engage me in the way that I’ve come to expect with the Smartypants Romance books. M.E. Carter’s Weights of Wrath will aptly show you the challenges of becoming a mother, but its romance needs a bit more heft to it.

In love and romance,
