Overall Grade: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

Before I begin this review, I want to say that I have adored Emma Renshaw’s Burn series. Adored it. I’ve written glowing reviews for the first three books of the series, and I had been looking forward to Smolder because Makenna and Colt have danced around each other from the first book of the series. Waiting patiently for their story, I was excited to finally get their book. And… their story is good. Their journey is a special one, and just as you find in the first three books of this series, there is some suspense woven into Colt and Makenna’s journey to happily-ever-after. Even more, all of your favorite couples from the first three books are here with the addition of Makenna’s half-brother Chase (who I hope gets his own story) and her brother, Wyatt. I love this group and Hawk Valley where tragedy permanently marked its inhabitants. However…and I hate writing that word. However, I was underwhelmed by Smolder, and that makes me sad. Something was missing. The magic of the first three books wasn’t in this book. I struggled with Makenna and Colt’s chemistry because it read as inconsistent. I think Renshaw knew that Makenna’s high school boyfriend/love of her life Deacon was a huge hurdle, but the emotions I was expecting from that healing were not profound for me. Again, I hate writing these words because I adore Emma Renshaw’s stories, but Smolder is my least favorite book of the series. 

Colt is a stand-up hero. He “smolders” on the page, and he’s incredibly protective of Makenna, but he’s also fairly flat as a character. Given that he’s the hero, there needed to be more dimension to his character. Even more, he says one thing about relationships early on in the book and then quickly undermines it with Makenna. Again, it felt uneven. 

Makenna’s journey takes up much of the space of Smolder, for good reason. This book has some secrets, none of which I will divulge here. Given that, there is more space for Makenna, but also more frustration as she can’t decide the direction of her relationship with Colt. She defines the idea of “mixed signals” in this book, which adds to the flatness of the story. 

Would I read Smolder if I hadn’t already read it? Yes, but only if I’d read the first three books of the series. Smolder is a necessary story for the Burn series. Emma Renshaw teases you for three books about Makenna and Colt. And maybe that’s the issue. Maybe I placed high expectations on them because the promise of them seemed great. In the end, however, something was missing here…and I’m not sure that I really know what it is.

You can’t help but say “thank you” to the author for stories such as Kate Willoughby’s Darkroom. Its truth lies in its provocation regarding issues related to cultural identity, beauty standards, and mental health in sports. You might think, “wait…how is this entertaining?” Yet, with the right wordsmith, these messages conspire into a story that reads easy and entertains its readers. 

Set in the Moo U world, Darkroom tells the story of Indi and Hudson. While Indi and Hudson meet when Indi walks in on Hudson with her former roommate, that isn’t the true meet-cute of Darkroom. Their true meeting occurs on a night when Indi rushes out to grab food on campus and runs literally into Hudson, causing them to spill their food. Indi has always harbored a crush on Hudson since walking in on him, but her sense of self is fragile, given that she has a Port Wine Stain birthmark on her face. Usually, she covers it with makeup, but the night they meet, she covers her face with a scarf and he sees her birthmark. Embarrassed, Indi rushes away, only to realize that Hudson is in her photography class. Hudson and Indi are intrigued with each other, and when the professor requires them to partner with a classmate, Hudson and Indi become partners out of their interest. As these two get to know each other, they realize a true connection and chemistry. Eventually, they fall for each other, but their lives are so complicated that you wonder if they can find their happy ending. 

Both Hudson and Indi are remarkable characters. What I love about Willoughby’s characterization of them is, at first glance, for example, Hudson seems fairly innocuous. Yes, he’s a typical “jock,” meaning that he plays the field and he prioritizes hockey over everything else. Yet, as Hudson’s journey progresses, we realize quickly that he struggles with anxiety and a serious health issue. Willoughby creates these moments in his character’s journey where he is like many of us: unwilling to seek help because it shows a sign of weakness. In those moments, she allows her heroine, Indi, to speak wisdom. When he takes Indi’s advice, he is often rewarded in big ways in this story, underscoring the idea that assistance doesn’t mean weakness; it means empowerment. 

Of the two, Indi is the most complex character in that she works through ideas about traditional standards of beauty which become complicated by her birthmark plus Indi’s sense of cultural identity. This too was an insightful choice for Willoughby’s Darkroom. In Indi’s characterization, we find an Asian-American character, bringing more diversity to the Moo U world. Even more, she has complicated her Chinese background by denying it (for fair psychological reasons). With her, though, Willoughby develops a roommate who oftentimes speaks truth to Indi, and she challenges her to embrace her cultural background. Indi’s evolution in Darkroom is my favorite part of the book…well, second favorite part. 

My favorite part is simply Hudson and Indi’s relationship. Except for one or two moments in the story, Indi and Hudson have a mutual respect for each other, and it creates this big love for them. Willoughby does a great job of pacing and progressing their journey, and I found myself continually motivated to keep turning the page until I finished the book. Kate Willoughby’s epilogue and bonus epilogue will make you swoon because, quite frankly, Hudson and Indi together are swoon-worthy.

Once again, Kate Willoughby is a great addition to the Moo U series. Providing even more diversity and a couple who challenge you to think about mental health, beauty, and culture, Darkroom, by my estimation, is another hit for the World of True North.

“When I’m with her, I feel…right.”

I have to admit that I was intrigued with J.D. Hawkins’s Playing Doctor, mostly because I want to read men writing romance. In a world where discrimination is all around us, romancelandia feels like a place where men who write romance are a small part of the population. Add to this a workplace romance where a self-assured, player of a doctor meets a self-assured, intelligent, insightful female doctor, and you’ve got some serious romance catnip. 

At its surface, Playing Doctor is an insta-romance between a hero and heroine who never thought they’d want a relationship. They meet when the hero, Colin, leaves his former job for a job at Santa Teresa. It is there where he sets eyes on the heroine, Mia, and they can hardly contain themselves. For a short space of this story, they actually succeed until their impulses and attraction get the best of them, and their chemistry is off the charts, so much so that these two pretty much fall in love with each other even though they don’t initially recognize it. 

I’ll be honest. I’m not a personal fan of the insta-love story and the quick resolution of it. Hawkins does put some time and space between these two. All this does is speed up their actions after that. This causes a bit of a believability issue with Colin, the requisite romeo of the story. I’ll let you read the book to understand what I mean about the difficulty of suspending your disbelief to his life choices. 

Additionally, there is a moment in the story when Mia meets with a young aspiring doctor. In the moment, the scene is interesting as Mia’s heroism as a doctor confronts her. However, this moment never materializes into anything more, and you find yourself wondering about that character later in the story. I would have liked more development of that moment at least to some level of fulfillment.

What is most intriguing about Playing Doctor, though, is its focus on reverse sexual harassment. Colin’s character struggles with a character from his former employer, and it creates problems with his new employer and ability to do the job. While he’s falling in love with Mia, his journey also entails a highlight on this often overlooked issue. And I think it’s important that Hawkins creates a focus on it in this book as it provides a different perspective on workplace harassment. 

In the world of romancelandia, we need more stories like J.D. Hawkins’s Playing Doctor. It is a menagerie of steam, chemistry, interesting characters, and topics that challenge our thinking. If you are looking for a quick read sure to entertain and provoke you, then grab this book quick.

So…one way to get my heart pumping and my stomach dropping in a book is cheating or the appearance of it. I know some readers love it as a mechanism in their romance to build steamy heat between a couple, but it often fills me with a little bit of dread. 

Enter the prologue to Kim Findlay’s Halftime. Talk about a hook. After reading it along with the first chapter, you can’t help but feel your heart pounding. 

Halftime exists in the Moo U series published through Sarina Bowen’s Heart Eyes Press, and it follows Seb, a hockey player on the Burlington U men’s hockey team, and Hailey, an incoming freshman goalie for the women’s hockey team. Seb and Hailey dated in high school, as they circled each other through hockey. Seb, a year older than Hailey, is off at college, and it seems as though he accidentally cheated on Hailey. As the story progresses, we find out there is more to the story. Even more, Seb and Hailey must work through seeing each other on campus and the reappearance of old feelings. 

There is much to love about Halftime. For one, Findlay takes the space of her story to illustrate the disparity between women’s and men’s hockey, something that Sarina Bowen herself has focused on in her recent story, Bombshells. Taking the space of the story and actually focusing a portion of Hailey’s characterization on this topic adds gravity to this book which feels necessary. Hailey’s dream is to play on a professional men’s hockey team; her father has raised her with that mission in mind. However, that dream becomes complicated in the realm of women’s hockey. This particular focus shows the complexity of Hailey’s journey.

Additionally, this is a story of second chances, and Seb, while seemingly the “bad guy” at the beginning of the book, is actually a stalwart hero. He’s not a typical hockey “player” as we read Connor, one of his teammates, working hard to corrupt him. He’s a monogamist, and he is also deeply in love with Hailey even though their story is complicated. A hero drawn like Seb makes reading an emotional story easier because he instills trust in the reader.

Even more, Hailey’s story, besides focusing on the disparities of gender, takes a particular turn towards the psychology of families. We also find this in Seb’s story as well. Both Hailey and Seb are products of their upbringings, and this causes issues for their future. Kim Findlay is careful to illustrate the work that must be done to make better choices than one’s parents. 

For me, however, Halftime wasn’t perfect. There were times when Seb and Hailey’s choices seemed inconsistent with the progression of their journeys. Seb’s choice to walk away from Hailey felt contrived to bring tension to their story. I think there might have been better ways to work through their troubles.

Overall, though, I thought Seb and Hailey as a couple is a perfect addition to the Moo U universe. There is a sensitivity and compassion to their characterizations that connects you to them emotionally. I am excited to see if we will get Connor’s story as he was one of the most compelling characters of this book. If you’ve loved Sarina Bowen’s World of True North, Halftime is a must-read.

The Keith Milano Memorial Fund was established to help raise awareness about the devastating and deadly disease that is mental illness. Keith’s spirit and laughter are kept alive through our efforts to increase awareness about mental illness and to raise money for education and imperative research. Keith often struggled with society’s perception of mental illness. Our hope is that by having the strength to say that Keith was “Bipolar” we can strip away the stigma and help others to be more open about their disease.

The Keith Milano Memorial Fund benefits the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP). At the end of the event, participating authors pay AFSP directly.

AFSP is the only national not-for-profit organization exclusively dedicated to understanding and preventing suicide through research and education, and to reaching out to people with mood disorders and those affected by suicide.
