✍🏻 Professor Romance’s Reviews: Kandi Steiner’s Learn Your Lesson, book 3 of her Kings of the Ice series ✍🏻

Overall Grade: A

Tropes: single dad; teacher/nanny; forced proximity; hockey romance; band of brothers; forbidden; grump/sunshine; age gap; opposites attract; spicy lessons

Two weeks out and Kandi Steiner’s Daddy P still sits with me. Learn Your Lesson, book 3 of her Kings of the Ice series, is my favorite. Why? Well, for a number of reasons.

  1. Kandi Steiner’s writing voice has evolved. I’d like to think it has more to do with her personal life, but the angst of A Love Letter to Whiskey seems a thing of the past. Is there angst in Learn Your Lesson? Why yes there is! However, this isn’t “steal-your-soul-angst”; Steiner recognizes that people are fraught and it affects relationships. Every relationship has ups and downs, and as Will allows himself to love and be loved, he and Chloe must struggle through his battle. This is organic to Learn Your Lesson, and one of the reasons I adore their journey.
  2. Add a kid, and I’m in. Create an unique relationship between the kid, in this case, Ava and Chloe, and the emotional gravitas is built. Ava is everything you love in romance: precocious, adorable, and also fraught like her daddy. Like Chloe and Will, she also undertakes a character journey. While it isn’t the most important journey of the story, Steiner uses it to build Chloe’s character as the true hero of Learn Your Lesson.
  3. Steiner’s craftsmanship of Chloe is my favorite. She is a woman battling the matriarchal rule of her childhood and finding herself. She’s insightful, joyful, and independent. Her tenacity to bring joy into Will and Ava’s life is one of the draws to this story. She knows herself and her wants, and she goes after it. She’s the type of female character romance readers are drawn to.
  4. The band of brothers of the hockey team adds layers to the story. For one, it allows us to revisit the characters of the series’ first two books, but it evolves the characters who have stories to come. Steiner entices and invests us deeper into her series by bringing the old while mixing it with the future. I cannot wait for Aleks’s story based on how much more Steiner gifts us about him in this story.

I’m invested. Daddy P (Will) currently owns my heart in this series. What’s not to love about a recovering grump who falls hard for his sunshiney nanny? Everything!

In love and romance,

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s Reviews: Lissa Sharpe’s Nun Too Soon, book 1 of the Bad Habit Book Club, a Smartypants Romance story ✍🏻

Overall Grade: A-/B+

Tropes: forced proximity; romantic suspense: former nun, librarian, virgin FMC; bounty hunter MMC

Lissa Sharpe’s Nun Too Soon, book 1 of the new Bad Habit Book Club series under the Smartypants Romance universe, was a delightful read. I was worried that the former nun, virgin librarian FMC, Helen, would be too virginal. However, Sharpe has crafted her in such a way that she’s compelling. She’s a moonlighting romance writer who simply wants to experience all that $ex entails; she’s not intentionally forgoing it based on her past occupation. Instead, it’s just an inconvenience. Sharpe is smart in adding an MMC with all the experience but a reticence for relationships. This creates romantic tension between Thad, Sharpe’s MMC, and Helen, driving the story forward.

Honestly, I couldn’t put Nun Too Soon down. As the second release of the Spring season, I was excited to read this new-to-me author, but also a story that grabbed my attention. I’m excited for the stories in this new series because there is such great potential with characters who are former nuns and priests finding love after that experience. It’s creative and a win for the Smartypants Romance world.

Undeniably Convenient by J. Saman is now live!

From USA Today bestselling author J. Saman comes a sizzling-hot billionaire, second chance, boss/employee romance about a broody doctor and his feisty resident who both want a baby but nothing to do with love.

Have a baby with my new boss? Not exactly what I had in mind when I decided I wanted to try to get pregnant.

But that’s exactly the situation I find myself in with Dr. Bennett Lawson.

The ridiculously gorgeous, broody billionaire I kissed years ago is asking to have a baby with me.

We both have our reasons for wanting this and with our ugly pasts, it’s an undeniably convenient arrangement.

No love. No relationship. Strictly business.

Now I’m living with him and pretending every searing touch, whispered word, and moaned breath is all in the name of our contract and nothing more.

Even as it becomes harder to keep our hands to ourselves and our feelings separate.

But when that stick shines with two pink lines, we both know what we’ve grown addicted to has to stop.

Except what happens when everything starts to fall apart and what we promised would never happen becomes the one thing we can no longer live without?

✍🏻 Oh, Daddy P, you have stolen my heart and the top spot of my favorite Kings of the Ice book boyfriends. Kandi Steiner’s Learn Your Lesson is HERE, and it’s equal parts electric, emotional, and engaging. Chloe, Will, and Ava will steal your heart. ✍🏻

Learn Your Lesson by Kandi Steiner is now live!

My mother only wanted me to learn one lesson growing up…

Men are trash.

Her father left her, and then my father left us. Being raised by her and my grandmother, I was surrounded by the reminder to be independent and guard my heart.

After my one and only experience with a boy in college fell flatter than a pancake, I realized they were right — and I was content to live the life of a twenty-six-year-old cat lady.

Until Will Perry blew my quiet world to smithereens.

Starting goalie for the Tampa Bay Ospreys and the kind of hot that scrambles your brain, all I was ever supposed to be to him was his daughter’s kindergarten teacher. Then, in a twist of events, his temporary nanny.

But temporary turns to permanent, and when I move into his pool house, everything changes.

He’s impossibly grumpy and focused on only two things: hockey, and taking care of his daughter. I’m only focused on using this new income to pay back my student loans.

But in that house, I feel his heated gaze beneath that permanent scowl, the way it lingers and warms my skin. And though I know my mother would lose her mind if she knew, my dreams have become midnight fantasies about my long-haired, muscle-lined mystery of a boss.

When the tension becomes too much, we break, and we make a deal.

He still needs a nanny. I still need a paycheck and for my matriarchy to not disown me. But Will agrees to teach me everything I’ve always wanted to learn, and I’m all too eager to be his student.

I can do this. I’m a grown woman. I can explore my sexuality with the hottest goalie on earth and still remain one-hundred percent professional. And I can definitely do it all without catching feelings.

I have to.

Otherwise, I’ll end up heartbroken in my mother’s arms while she shakes her head and asks me if I’ll ever learn my lesson.

Meet Kandi

Kandi Steiner is a #1 Amazon Bestselling Author and whiskey connoisseur living in Tennessee. Best known for writing “emotional rollercoaster” stories, she loves bringing flawed characters to life and writing about real, raw romance — in all its forms. No two Kandi Steiner books are the same, and if you’re a lover of angsty, emotional, and inspirational reads, she’s your gal.

An alumna of the University of Central Florida, Kandi graduated with a double major in Creative Writing and Advertising/PR with a minor in Women’s Studies. Her love for writing started at the ripe age of 10, and in 6th grade, she wrote and edited her own newspaper and distributed to her classmates. Eventually, the principal caught on and the newspaper was quickly halted, though Kandi tried fighting for her “freedom of press.”

She took particular interest in writing romance after college, as she has always been a die hard hopeless romantic, and likes to highlight all the challenges of love as well as the triumphs.

When Kandi isn’t writing, you can find her reading books of all kinds, planning her next adventure, or pole dancing (yes, you read that right). She enjoys live music, traveling, hiking, yoga, playing with her fur babies and soaking up the sweetness of life.

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s Reviews: Jessica Peterson’s I Wish We Had Forever, the final book of her Harbour Village series ✍🏻

Overall Grade: A-

Tropes: brother’s best friend; best friend’s sister; small town; unrequited until it’s not; fated/soulmates; opposites attract; fake marriage

Jessica Peterson’s I Wish We Had Forever is the perfect exclamation point to a series that has stolen the hearts of many, including mine. A story in her Harbour Village series, her newest book tells the story of Abel, the friend of the heroes in the first two books of the series, and Jen, the younger sister of Tuck from book 2. Peterson has crafted a narrative that delves deep into the emotional struggles of two souls meant to be more, but Abel’s past and family have taught him that he “isn’t enough” for Jen. The tension between Abel’s clear love and attraction for Jen and his reticence to pursue her for something more is a heart-wrenching journey. You want to reach into the story and comfort him, telling him he is worthy of Jen’s brand of “good girl” love. Peterson uses the character of Abel to incite your emotions because his denial is painful to endure at times.

The heat of the book comes from Jen’s willingness to accept his idea of a fake marriage. In fact, this is one of Peterson’s steamiest since Abel likes it rough and dirty. When Jen and Abel decide to get it out of their system, it lights the pages on fire. Peterson vacillates between their $exfest and their emotional entanglement.

Thankfully, I Wish We Had Forever has the Harbour Village crew to add dimension to Abel and Jen’s story. From the tension between Tuck and Abel to the fatherly advice of Tuck and Jen’s father, Joe, readers find themselves on a roller coaster of emotions. As Joe shows Abel the truth about himself, he recognizes that he has loved and will always love Jen, mitigating their final coupleship. For me, Joe and Abel’s talk was the impetus for my tears in this story because Abel just wants to love and be loved by the love of his life.

Jessica Peterson’s I Wish I Had Forever provides the perfect ending to her Harbour Village series. It stands as a powerful testament that love, when given a chance, can conquer our pasts and set us up for a beautiful future. It’s a beacon of hope, reminding us that love has the power to heal and transform, if we simply allow it.

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s Reviews: Nine Month Contract ✍🏻

Overall Grade: A-/B+

Tropes: small town; surrogate/baby daddy; mountain man MMC; found family; age gap; grumpy/sunshine; breeding kink; curvy FMC

If you’ve ever met Amy Daws, her self-effacing, almost humble, humorous vibe is her charm. You can’t help but like Amy Daws on meeting her, and I’ve only done so at a book signing, not the best place to get to know someone. Yet, after reading Nine Month Contract, her newest book after a bit of a break, you can’t help but feel that charm threaded through her pages. Daws’s voice is likable and connective. As you read Nine Month Contract, she draws you in with the same humor she exudes in person, but she wallops you emotionally with the sentimentality of her characters.

I found myself charmed by Nine Month Contract because her characters, Wyatt and Trista, are consumable. That’s a strange word to use for her characters, but Daws has drawn them so that you can’t help but want to know them. Trista is the heart of this book. She’s alone in the world, having never had a family to love her unconditionally. She loves animals who’ve lost their home because she recognizes herself in them. Daws has crafted her foil in Wyatt, a grumpy, gruff mountain man, ready to become a single dad and live out his days building sustainable houses and raising a child. Where Trista is sunny, Wyatt is the opposite, and it creates a pool of deliciousness that you’d love to bathe in. From their meeting, it’s clear that Daws has written rom-com gold. The sharp banter, the inciting chemistry, and the push and pull of their ethical dilemma draw you into the book. The silliness of their situation, coupled with Wyatt’s need to protect and care for Trista from almost a caveman-like place, adds more layers of romance heaven to this story.

Add to all of this Wyatt’s supportive, but emotionally complicated family. The Fletchers do not have easy relationships per se, but they love each other. Daws uses them to bind Trista and Wyatt’s story together. One of my favorite tropes is the found family especially when a main character lacks that for themselves. The emotional tether of Trista finding a family to love her without any measure is my favorite part of this book, and Amy Daws, who can write humor and banter well, writes Trista’s journey to finding a family to love her unconditionally calls to your emotions. In using the point of view of Wyatt’s niece, Everly, Daws underscores that task even more.

As I said before, I was charmed by Amy Daws’s Nine Month Contract. I had loved Last on the List, book 5 of her Wait with Me series and the launcher for this new series, but a protective Wyatt falling in love with a beautiful, but lonely Trista was exactly what I needed to be reminded that 1) Amy Daws is a heck of a romance author and 2) her rom-coms are pure heaven.

In love and romance,

Professor A

From Amazon #1 bestselling author Amy Daws, comes an all-new small town, spicy romance sure to hit you in the gut with laughs, feels, and mountain man grunts.

Help Wanted: Grumpy Mountain Man seeks baby momma. Job is an incubator position only. Surrogate must be impervious to grunting in the form of communication and nosey brotherly neighbors. Rustic mountain range housing available upon request.

I wanted to pummel my irritating brothers when they posted their own version of a wanted ad to help me with my life.

But I can’t fault the results once the right woman lands on my lap.

Becoming a single father is not a decision I made lightly. In fact, it’s the biggest decision of my entire life.

Which is why when I interview Trista, I know she’s perfect.

She’s wild, she’s opinionated, she wears cowboy boots. Even my pet goat loves her…

She’s the exact type of person I was holding out for.

And to my great horror, I realize on our first night of attempting this baby making dance…when the lights are low, the cheap wine is flowing, and the home insemination supplies are laid out on the kitchen counter…

I want to do a lot more than just make her my surrogate.

I want to make her mine.

Excerpt:

“Who is the pen for?” I ask, staring up at the giant mountain man.

“Your pig.”

My eyes widen. “You expect my Reginald to sleep in the barn?”

“Where else would he sleep?”

“In his sleeping quarters upstairs next to me, obviously.”

“Come again?” Wyatt is loud in the quietness of the peaceful barn.

“Reggie is a rescue, Wyatt! He came from a horrible situation where the owners neglected him. He had hoof rot and couldn’t freaking walk. I had to give him daily doses of antibiotics and hand-feed him, or they were going to put him down!”

“Jesus Christ,” Wyatt murmurs under his breath, looking away in obvious agitation.

“Sir Reginald sleeps on a nice little crib mattress I bought second-hand. He even has a special blanket and likes to sleep in most mornings.”

Wyatt’s head snaps to the open wooden stairs leading to the apartment. “How are you going to get him up the stairs every day? Those legs don’t look long enough to climb stairs.”

“I’ll carry him.” I shrug.

The mountain man’s eyebrows shoot to the moon as he points an accusing finger at Reggie. “He’s got to weigh at least fifty pounds.”

“Sixty-five, actually, but my vet friend just put us on a low-calorie feed even though I think Reggie is beautiful just the way he is.”

“For fuck’s sake,” Wyatt growls and jams a hand through the top of his hair. “You aren’t going to be able to carry him up those stairs when you’re pregnant, Trista.”

“Well, I’m not pregnant yet.” I scoff, my chin cocking up to meet his as he looms over me with his giant mountain-man stature.

He pauses for a second as his eyes rove over my face. His voice is deep and husky when he replies, “Yet.”

Goose bumps erupt over my flesh as one of the tiniest words in the English language just had a massive impact on my not-so-tiny body. I realize I’m a surrogate so we’re not doing this pregnancy thing the old-fashioned way, but it’s been a while since I’ve been laid, and with that one little word, my traitorous mind wandered to a reality where we did it the old-fashioned way. And I liked that thought.

I swallow slowly, desperate to get control of myself. I glance down at our chests, which are nearly brushing each other. When did we get so close? His scent of pine trees, woodchips, and hay is intoxicating.

Wyatt’s eyes flick down to my lips as I wonder what the hell are we actually arguing about? I want to be pregnant. And I suppose he’s right…I shouldn’t be lifting sixty-plus pounds once I have a baby growing inside me. I guess Reginald’s sleeping quarters never came up in all our lawyer negotiating.

And why is he looking at me like that? And why does my body feel the way it feels right now? I’m hot and agitated having him so close to me and telling me what to do. I like it, and I loathe it.

The voices of men outside force us to pull away from each other just as they walk into the barn with armloads of my stuff.

“Trista, these are my brothers Calder and Luke.” Wyatt’s voice is strained as he avoids eye contact with me. Oh, he’s mad mad.

The two giant men in flannel stop talking and gape at me for a moment. The heavily tattooed one with devilish eyes tips his chin up and says, “What’s up, MB?”

Wyatt glowers at his brother. “Calder…”

The slightly smaller one (although none of them are small, honestly…I’m in a barn full of flannelled giants) with floppy blond hair laughs boyishly, clearly enjoying the tension between his two brothers.

“What’s MB mean?” I ask curiously.

“Don’t ask,” another voice echoes from behind them.

Calder and Luke spread apart to reveal what I can only assume to be another brother.

“This is my eldest brother, Max,” Wyatt explains with a wave of his hand. “He doesn’t live up here on the mountain with us though.”My brows lift knowingly. “Didn’t want to join in on the Seven Brides for Seven Brothers remake up here?”

✍🏻 Unrequited love can be a bitch! But what if it isn’t so unrequited? Jen and Abel in Jessica Peterson’s I Wish We Had Forever are soooo special. And super spicy! ✍🏻

I Wish We Had Forever by Jessica Peterson is now live!

A scorching hot, brother’s-best-friend, bad-boy/good-girl, fake-marriage standalone romance in the small-town Harbour Village series …

I’ve been pining for Abel Miller since we were teenagers. He’s sexy as hell, and has always played a starring role in all my fantasies. Too bad he only sees me as his best friend’s little sister.

He’s also a broody playboy who takes home a new girl every night, while I’m looking to find forever with someone. Abel and I couldn’t be more different.

But when my dad gets sick and says he just wants to see me safe, settled, and happily in love, Abel shocks me by offering to pretend to be my husband.

Now I’m living with the man of my dreams in his luxe bachelor pad as his fake wife. Plot twist: it only has one bed. Which isn’t a problem, until he accidentally walks in on me naked and I wind up bent over the couch with him on his knees between my legs.

Turns out my feelings weren’t so one-sided after all. But Abel swears he’s too much of a bad boy for the type of relationship I’m looking for, and warns me not to fall in love with him.

Can I convince him he’s always been the one for me? Or am I just headed for heartbreak by wishing we had forever?

I WISH WE HAD FOREVER is book three in the standalone interconnected Harbour Village series.
