✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 4 1/2 ⭐️ Review: Rebecca Jenshak’s The Tip-Off ✍🏻

Overall Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 1/2

I’m a romance reviewer. I fell into it over a year ago, and I’ve been working hard to build an interest in my blog. A couple of months ago, thankfully, a PR person reached out to me about Rebecca Jenshak. And, to this day, I am so thankful that PR person found me because Rebecca Jenshak has become one of my favorite new adult sports romance writers. She has this way of building your interest in the characters by walking us carefully through their stories and their motivations. When you start reading her books, you quickly fall into the lives of her characters, and she grows your love for them.

I have been waiting for her newest book, The Tip-Off. After reading The Assist and The Fadeaway, there were two characters who had revealed the least about themselves in those books: Zeke (“Z”) and Gabby. From those books, we knew that Z loved Tom Cruise, listening to music, and being solitary. When he spoke, he did it carefully and with great wisdom. His place was important, though, as the foil to characters like Joel. He was dependable for Wes, and he was always a solid presence, albeit a quiet one.

We gained a bit of Gabby’s story in The Assist because she is Blair’s (the story’s heroine) best friend. We learned that she was in a car accident that caused scarring, and it led her to forgo social situations out of insecurity. With Blair’s prodding, in The Tip-Off, Gabby has decided to attend Valley University in person. Since she has been taking classes online, she has missed out on the typical college experience, and she’s made a list to do just that: experience college. She’s looking for someone to help her fulfill it. That person becomes Z.

Since the beginning of college, Z’s life has been basketball. His goal is the NBA, and his life is balanced on the cusp of graduating college, going into the draft, and fulfilling his dream. Gabby entering his life complicates this because her need to live the college experience challenges him to see more than just basketball, to be more for himself. Gabby challenges Z to simply become a better, more well-rounded person. Will their journey end with each other?

Folks, The Tip-Off is a slow burn. At the end of The Fadeaway when Joel plans a prom for Gabby and Katrina, it seems as if the sparks are already flying off the page with Z and Gabby. There is clearly an interest there. However, the beginning of this book finds an irritated Z (he’s been roped into the “date”) and eventually, an embarrassed Gabby. While it seems like common sense to the reader that Z and Gabby would make a great pair, this does not happen for much of the book. But here’s the great part of this: when Z finally recognizes his feelings for Gabby, this couple becomes magical, like more so than Wes and Blair and Joel and Katrina. Their HEA is probably my favorite of the three books, and it made the slow burn of their coupling gratifying. So…be patient.

Additionally, Gabby is a gem. A true, true gem. I loved Blair and Katrina, but Gabby has this combination of emotional depth and humor where the other two heroines of the series don’t compare. Don’t get me wrong. I love them, but Gabby made me smile and laugh aloud many times in this book. Even in her insecurity, there’s an internal beauty to her character that makes you fall in love with her. She is both insecure and wise. She challenges Z, pulls him out of the protective barrier of basketball. She helps him see more than just his goal; she shows him life, something he hadn’t really been living until her. She is a fresh breath and a hope. And she reads like that on the page.

I think Z has been one of my favorites from the start. Wes is a bit too grumpy for me, and Joel is a bit too much of a flirt. Z’s solitary way of life connects with me. There is a headiness to his character even when he isn’t “living”. And he’s my favorite guy especially in the last quarter of The Tip-Off. His and Gabby’s happy ending is, I think, the best of the three. It has the most movement, and it’s the most real, at least to me.

As I mentioned at the beginning of this review, Rebecca Jenshak’s stories are mini-universes. She crafts her characters so that her readers walk and breathe and love with them through their journeys. You know every thought and emotion and experience. In doing this, she draws you in and makes you, the reader,  responsible for the love on the page. Z and Gabby in The Tip-Off are my new favorite Jenshak couple. Their story illustrates the truths that beauty is definitely better when it is internal, not on the outside only, and life is only lived when it is lived in moments with others. Zeke and Gabby craft these truths through humor, tears, and love.

“I want someone to love me for the ugly and the beautiful, and every shade in between. True vulnerability is being seen for everything you are, the good and the bad…”

In love and romance,

✍🏻 Happy Release Day, Jessica Peterson! Southern Gentleman, one of my 5 ⭐️ books, is LIVE NOW! ✍🏻

Southern Gentleman - RB banner.jpg

Southern Gentleman, an all-new full length standalone contemporary romance by Jessica Peterson is LIVE!

COVER .jpg

I know two things when I meet my new boss, Greyson Parker Montgomery III.

One, he’s an egomaniac.

And two, we’re going to get naked.

Something I didn’t know? That I’d end up pregnant.

No one is more surprised by our off-the-charts chemistry than me. I’m a free spirit with a passion for design and a taste for the bohemian. Greyson is a cocky venture capitalist who’s as pretentious as his sharply cut power suits.

He owns half of Charleston, and has the other half at his beck and call. But the only place he owns me is in bed…or in the backseat of his car, boneless and begging for mercy.

We argue over contracts and costs all day long. Behind closed doors, however, we engage in a different kind of business. The kind that has me surrendering to his unique brand of dominance.

Our no-strings attached arrangement suits me just fine. Until I wake up one morning with what I think is a wicked hangover.

Only it’s not a hangover.

I thought Greyson was a typical “greed is good” grump. But when he demands to be involved in the life we accidentally created, I start to see a different side of him. One that’s more gentleman than jerk.

Am I crazy to think we could be a family together? Or is making me fall for him just another one of his power plays?

A stand-alone, contemporary romance.

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 5 ⭐️ Review: Jessica Peterson’s Southern Gentleman ✍🏻

Overall Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

“She’s got a nuanced understanding of me. My story. The world.”

There is just something about Jessica Peterson. Southern Gentleman is the third book I’ve read that she’s written, and she’s quickly setting herself apart as a romance writer with an intentional voice geared at socially-conscious romance.

As was the case with Southern Charmer and Southern Player, Southern Gentleman gives us a heroine with the internal fortitude to accept and love an imperfect hero. And Greyson is pretty imperfect.

Julia is a modern-day woman. She isn’t your typical romantic heroine who easily navigates her accidental pregnancy. With most heroines, there would be no question about keeping the baby. Yet, Peterson takes a modern-day route and actually has Julia toy with the idea of choice. Whether your personal beliefs lean a certain way, Peterson isn’t necessarily asking us to choose. Instead, she’s offering a real-life dilemma in a fictional realm. In Julia working through her decision with her “tribe” or her “village,” Peterson is marrying realism with fiction. She does it further when Julia struggles with pregnancy. This is real life thinking. This is how real women do pregnancy. And that’s the power of Peterson’s kind of Romance, and it’s what hooked me in.

Even more, the wisdom in this book resides in Julia. As Greyson struggles with his past, trying to atone for it in the present, Julia reminds us that everyone’s imperfect and that adds the spice to life: “‘…Villain in one story, hero in another.'” Julia is profound and a “straight shooter.” It’s one of the qualities that Greyson adores, and it’s one of the many reasons this book is so good. Her direct manner forces Greyson to evaluate his life. In doing so, it advances the plot and draws them even further together. Peterson has drawn such a strong woman in Julia that she creates this eloquent realistic tale of an imperfect love.

Greyson is all of us, or at least he’s many of us. Always striving but never progressing. He represents the broken human condition who needs healing through his love for Julia. And the Greyson of Southern Player is really nowhere to be found in this book. Thankfully, Peterson gives us a character with greater, more emotional depth especially after he bares his soul to Julia. You can’t help but fall in love with him as we discover his soft underbelly. I love that she makes him a feminist for his niece. I love that he adores his family. And I love that he requires more saving than Julia. He is Peterson’s version of a modern-day hero, and it works well.

If anything, I would have liked to see more of his “villain” because I think we see more hero, and it seems confusing that Julia remains at odds with him when he clearly adores her easily.

That being said, once they truly connect, their coupling is electric. Their chemistry screams off the page, and it’s palpable for the reader. Together, these two are hot.

Lastly, as Peterson illustrates her message of imperfection, her words in Southern Gentleman are profound. I spent so much time highlighting her words, her golden nuggets of truth found in the mouths and minds of Greyson and Julie. To illustrate:

“‘Shadows come with the light. You can’t have one without the other. And you have to know by now that I believe they make the other more interesting. It’s our shadows that give us depth. Literally and figuratively,’ she says, reaching up with her other hand to trail her thumb over the indent in my chin. ‘I like your depths. Same as you like mine.'”

This is but one example. Peterson’s depth of language and thought is only one of the many reasons to buy and read this book.

Peterson’s Southern Gentleman is a modern-day romance seeking to remind us that romance isn’t about perfection. It’s about “life turned all the way up.” Greyson struggles to live the perfect life but, in doing so, lives no life at all. Until Julia.

And in a typical romance, Julia would never doubt pregnancy. It would be perfect, all sweet feelings. Except that, in the real world, it isn’t. Jessica Peterson is giving us real love, real feelings, and real people in Southern Gentleman because it places us, the reader, directly in her story. Because it IS our story.

I can’t make out her form until I’m halfway down to the water. She sits on the dock, feet dangling above the water. She’s so fucking beautiful and innocent and I want to ruin her and worship her all at the same time. I’m not going to do either of those things, though. I’m going to stick to the path. The path doesn’t include dating. The path doesn’t even include fun most days and Gabby deserves days that are all about fun.

She turns her head as I get closer and there’s that big Gabby smile pointed right at me. “Hey.”

“Hey, yourself. Whatcha doing down here all alone?”

“I thought we could cross skinny dipping off both our lists.”

My brows raise. “What about your tattoo?”

She shrugs. “It’s been a week. I’m willing to risk a quick dip if you are.”

I rub a hand over my chin. I’m not ashamed of my body, but I’d also prefer not to have my black ass photographed if one of my teammates happen to stumble upon us. Last year one of the sophomores got drunk at a party and passed out naked in the bathroom. I have no idea why he was naked in there, but the photos of his hairy ass were everywhere. My ass is baby smooth and awesome, but I still don’t want it on display.

“Well, come on before someone sees us.” She’s unbuttoning her shorts and pushing them down while I stand there gawking. The sight of her bare legs puts me in motion. Just not a part of me I want in motion right now. I turn around, give my dick a little pep talk that includes promises I won’t be a celibate asshole forever, and then undress to my boxers.

“You decent?” I ask over my shoulder.

“No. Oh my God, don’t look.” She laughs, I hear her footsteps on the dock and then a splash. A few seconds later, she calls, “Your turn.”

I push my boxers down and then hold my hands over my junk, semi-erect still because promises be damned, and take two large steps before jumping in beside her. Her happy squeals direct my entry into the lake as I clear the water from my eyes. We’re treading water buck naked not two feet from one another. It’s a little trippy. I haven’t spent time with a girl naked like this in… well forever. If I’m naked and this close to a girl, it’s for one purpose and though I’m a gentleman, of course, it’s not about anything but carnal desires being met. Thrusts and grunts and release.

I don’t think it would be like that with Gabby. No, I know it wouldn’t be like that, which is another reason it can’t happen.

“So now what?” she asks, suddenly looking a little nervous.

“Far as I know, this is all there is to it. How do you feel?”

“Naked.” She laughs. “But also like a rebel.”

She splashes water at me playfully and I do it right back.

“Think anyone can see us?”

I shrug. “Maybe. Do you want them to see you?”

“God, no,” she says too fast. The excitement in her eyes is a dead giveaway. I think Gabby likes the thrill, the possibility of being caught, and God help me because I want nothing more than to keep her safe while she explores every sordid fantasy.

Kiss Me Not

Releasing August 27th

Pageflex Persona [document: PRS0000035_00027]

Let me make this clear right here, right now: I, Halley Dawson, do not care that Preston Wright is kissing other women.

Not a lick. Not at all. Nuh-uh-freakin’-uh.

I do care that he’s doing it six feet away from me behind a gaudy velvet curtain—making him my competition in this year’s kissing contest.

Why do I care, you ask? Because I’ve had an unfortunate crush on the insufferable idiot since I was sixteen years old, but I also know it’s never going to happen.

He’s the Creek Falls bachelor to die for, and I’m the Creek Falls racoon lady who puts peanut butter sandwiches out for them every night.

I’m not going to let him break my four-year-long reign—no matter how many times he breaks the rules and slides the curtain across to do the one thing he’s not allowed to:

Kiss me.

In hindsight, I never should have opened that text message. The last thing I needed first thing on a Monday was a picture of some stranger’s, um, eggplant, in my inbox.

I also should have replaced the batteries in my fire alarm, because my Friday night did not need to end with my apartment building going up in flames.

But it’s fine. It’s fine. Everything is fine.

I’m only lying in a hospital bed with more split ends than I’ve ever had, almost all my Earthly possessions have turned to ash, and apparently, they don’t serve wine to patients in this place.

But like I said, it’s fine.

Until he walks in.

The guy who saved my life. My hero. Noah Jacobs.

And the universe is amusing itself at my expense, because the dirty photo I woke up to on Monday?

It’s his.

Kiss Me Again

Releasing October 22nd

KISSMEAGAIN

WANTED: ROOMMATE. Must be tidy, polite, and absolutely not my brother’s hot as sin best friend.

I have no idea why I said yes.

Maybe I’d had one too many wines. Maybe I’d done it accidentally. Maybe I’d been sleep-texting.

One thing I know for sure is this: I absolutely do not want Ethan Hawkins in my apartment, up in my business, taking over my space.

Yet he’s here. Moving his stuff into my spare bedroom. Sending a wave of panty-melting, musky man-scent my way every time he walks past me.

Here’s the thing.

We don’t get along—at all. We never have, and I don’t think we’re going to start now that we’re under one roof.

There’s also that little issue where I’m kinda, sorta, totally in love with him…

Uh-oh.
