I’ve been in love with her for two years.

The first time around I screwed things up. I hesitated and the moment was gone.

I passed when I shouldn’t have.

Not a total loss. I gained a best friend instead of whatever we might have been.

Sydney is hands down the best thing that’s ever happened to me, and I’ll do anything to keep her in my life. Even bury my feelings deep inside.

But one hot summer together at the lake filled with lots of teeny-tiny bikinis and I’m ready to risk it all for a second chance.

It’s time to take my shot.

“Did you have relations with my brother . . .”

Good question.

I’d like to preface this by saying it was never my intention to ever get involved in a workplace romance, let alone get involved with the most surly, agitating, and pompous man I’ve ever met who just so happens to be my new friend’s brother.

My intentions were to show students how English and reading books could actually be fun and make a new life for myself in the suburbs of Chicago.

But so far, I’ve managed to be called into the principal’s office.

Coerced into participating in the teacher’s badminton league.

And instigated into passionate fights with Arlo Turner over education and decorum while losing my underwear at the same time.

Known as Mr. Turns Me On, he’s the reason I might get fired from my first ever teaching job.

The contract with Major League Soccer was supposed to help repair my damaged reputation.

British. Tattooed. Sexy. A man currently at the center of a huge scandal.

The goal? To convince him to stay in the States.

But what’s wrong with a little fun in the meantime? No strings. No sweet nothings. Just a way
to pass the time while we’re both struggling to prove our true selves to the world.
If someone found out our relationship was anything more than professional, it would only serve
to prove all our critics right.

Excerpt

The chains fell off his chest and arms and pooled around his waist. His freedom swept through him in ragged breaths.

She gazed at him with stiff lines of determination on her face, an expression he’d seen a hundred times, the unwavering glare that tortured him, aroused him, conjured his nightmares, and filled his dreams.

He memorized each twitch of her lashes, the delicate point of her raised chin, every faltered breath. He was consumed with having her and terrified to lose her.

“Tell me what you’re thinking.” He reached up to brush his fingers through her thick dark hair.

She recoiled before his hand made contact. A blank mask fell over her face, a wall of ice slamming between them. She moved to the driver seat and faced forward.

His momentary calm burst into a roaring fire. Hands fisting, heart pounding, he didn’t know what to do with the fury burning through his veins. He tagged his jeans and boots from the floorboard and jumped out.

He dressed as he walked, jerking on his boots, kicking branches out of his path. His muscles heated, and sweat slicked his bare chest, chilling in the night air. He wasn’t angry at her. He was angry for her. The abuse done to her body. The helplessness of her situation. His inability to free her.

He slammed a fist into the nearest tree trunk. Again. Again. Pain ricocheted through his hand, down his arm, and fed his breaking heart.

Out of the corner of his eye, he caught her silhouette standing a few yards away. A slender shadow, shrouded by darkness. And in her raised arms, she held a gun, trained on him.

He threw another fist. Absorbed the burn. Expelled the rancor. He knew she was holding a gun on him to prevent him from running and putting her family at further risk. Regardless, she wouldn’t shoot him. Not because she needed a slave, but because she loved what was hers with a self-destructing passion.

He faced her and held out his arms. “I’m yours.”

The girl and the gun didn’t move.

“Lose the damned mask and stop hiding from me.” He raked his throbbing hands through his hair. “Scream, cry, hit something. Hit me. But for God’s sake, let it out.”

The shadowy lines of her body wavered. The gun lowered, returned to her boot.

He stretched out his arms, savoring the cool breeze brushing over his unrestrained skin. “I stand here without rope or chains, Liv, tethered to you by my own will.” His blood beat with the ferocity of his words. “I won’t be free until you are.”

Her head jerked back, her body rigid. Then she walked straight to him and unleashed her fists on his chest. She clobbered him over and over, her gasps accelerating with each fall of her hand.

The lashing didn’t hurt. Not like the whimpers rising from her chest. She was hurting, lashing out for the wrongs that had been done to her. A sharp pain swelled in his throat. The only thing he could do was take it in, try to bear some of it for her.

He held his arms out and his body open. When her hits ebbed into weak slaps, she stumbled back, hugging herself and clutching her elbows.

His heartbeat slogged through the ache in his chest. He kept his arms outstretched and whispered, “I’m here.”

Disbelief widened the whites of her eyes, and her breath caught. He waited.

In two running steps, she launched at him, climbed up his chest, and curled her hands in his hair. He lifted her, pinning the curves of her thighs around his hips, and took her mouth. His knuckles burned with fever, but the heat from her lips was overriding. She whispered kisses over his jaw, around his mouth, caressing, assuring.

He angled his head, deepening the reach of his tongue and drinking her in lick by lick. Her hands in his hair, the sweetness of her breath filling his mouth, there will never be another kiss like hers. She knew how to suck his lips and trap his tongue in a way that stroked every nerve ending in his body. More than that, she knew how to reach inside him. She found him, her ferocity defying the odds and pivoting them into place, perfectly interlocked.

Her thighs squeezed around his waist, her breasts soft against his chest. He palmed her backside with a cautious gentleness, and chased her tongue, spiraling, stretching deeper, falling heart-first into an existence where only she mattered.

Ava Callahan.

Love of my life.

Wrecker of my soul.

I would have sworn on anything that what we shared was real.

But she broke my trust. And then my heart. I don’t think I can piece it back together without her, but I’m sure gonna try.

I’m better off on my own, anyways, right? Who needs girls when you have football?

If only I believed that. Look, when you need someone in your life, you don’t want to let her go. And I can’t let go of Ava. I love her. She loves me. Nothing can convince me otherwise. It’s as simple as that. I know no matter what, this girl belongs to me. We may have issues, but we’re meant to be. So I’ll do whatever it takes to get her back.

Even if I have to fight dirty.

Excerpt

Can you die from a broken heart? Not asking for a friend.

The street is empty. Eli is long gone. I clutch my phone in my hand so tight, my fingers cramp up. He won’t respond to my texts or my calls. He’s ghosting me.

Pain radiates from my chest, a constant, throbbing reminder that Eli just destroyed me with a few choice words. He doesn’t believe me. Worse, he doesn’t trust me. I never told my brother about his parents. I don’t know who did. Eli may have hinted at things and flat out told me his mother drank too much, but he never talked about his dad cheating. And why would I tell Jake any of that?

There’s no way I ever would.

So who did?

I make my way to the backyard to find my entire family is gone. Glancing toward the kitchen windows, I see they’re inside. Waiting for me. My parents and Jake, who’s sitting on a barstool at the counter with a glower on his freshly abused face. It serves him right that Eli got a few punches in. I don’t even feel bad that it happened, though I suppose I should.

Mom catches my gaze and raises her brows, the look on her face plainly telling me, get in here.

If I could turn around and run away, I would. I’d run and run and run until I was out of breath and so, so far, no one could find me again.

But I don’t move. I definitely don’t go inside. Not yet. Dad says something to Mom, and I can tell they’re having a minor argument. About me? I wonder if she told Dad about our little secret. How she knew about Eli and I dating.

My gaze sweeps over the scene of the crime, AKA the spot where Jake and Eli fought. The moonlight catches on something on the ground, making it glint and I kneel down, reaching toward the shiny piece. My fingertips touch cool metal and I grasp it between my fingers.

A gold #1 pendant. Eli’s. I feel around for the chain, almost desperately, on my hands and knees, but I don’t see it. I wonder if he knows he lost it. I’m sure he’ll be upset. He loves this necklace and the fact that his father gave it to him.

But would he want to know I have it?

Maybe.

Maybe that’ll be my one way to reach out to him. I have something he wants.

Unfortunately, from the way everything just went down, it’s not me.

“Ava!” I lift my head to find my mother standing in the open doorway of the kitchen, her expression somber. “Come inside. Now.”

Rising to my feet, I clutch the pendant in my palm and march toward my punishment. I hang my head as I enter the kitchen, not wanting to look at any of them. Especially Jake. His anger radiates off of him, all of it aimed straight at me. Mom closes the door but, otherwise, says nothing. Neither does Jake. Or Dad.

It’s a very uncomfortable silence full of thick tension that seems to last ten minutes, but is probably more like thirty seconds before my dad can’t take it any longer.

“Ava.” His tone is firm, yet gentle. He’s mad, but he doesn’t want to show it. “Tell me what Eli Bennett was doing at our house at this time of night.”

Jake snorts. “What do you think—”

“Enough,” Dad says, silencing my big brother.

This gives me immense satisfaction. Lifting my head, I meet my father’s gaze head on. “We’re together. Well…we were.”

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 4 1/2 ⭐️ Review: Laurelin Paige’s Man in Charge ✍🏻

Overall Grade: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ 1/2

As a Gen X-er, I grew up in the thrall of some of the best movies of all time. In my mind, the 80s birthed some notable rom-coms that transcend generations, one of them being Working Girl, a workplace romance starring Melanie Griffith and Harrison Ford (who is definitely not the rogue, Han Solo, but more wealthy, sweet, and hot). I cannot tell you the number of times I’ve watched Working Girl because I adored that movie. I loved Melanie Griffith’s chutzpah at seeking to transcend her position as a lowly administrative assistant from the “wrong side of the tracks” to the life as an executive in the bright lights of Manhattan. Along the way, she meets Harrison Ford’s character through a game of mistaken identity and intrigue. They obviously fall in love, but her life unravels when her secrets are found out. Thankfully, this being Hollywood fiction, all is righted in the end, and they live happily-ever-after. What always intrigued me in my teen mind as I watched that movie was the movie’s suggestion that women had to struggle to “get to the top.” That the glass ceiling was firmly in place, and it would take men, like Harrison Ford’s character, to help women break through that ceiling. That was definitely an important message for the 80s, but interestingly enough, it’s still a message for today. And Laurelin Paige’s Man in Charge, book 1 of the Man in Charge duet, is a modern-day Working Girl, highlighting ideas about privilege and power. Over and over again, Laurelin Paige magnifies the ways that privilege and power can be used for both good and evil.

Man in Charge encompasses everything you love about Laurelin Paige’s romances. There is a playboy-esque, alpha-hero in the character of Scott Sebastian. Honestly, in this book, Scott’s characterization isn’t as round as you would imagine mostly because the point of this view for this book comes from Tess, Paige’s heroine. We aren’t privy to Scott’s emotions or thoughts, so it’s difficult to see him as more than the guy who Tess wants physically. He is also the path by which she must travel to secure a contract for her passion project. He is the gatekeeper for her ambition. He spurs on her journey, but he isn’t her inspiration. Her best friend who lives with a disease, dysautonomia, is the ignition to the flame of her purpose. And honestly, this is a Paige staple in her romances. She oftentimes writes through the lens of one character for a portion of her stories until she introduces the other lens. I’m hoping in the second book of this series that we will indeed be provided with Scott Sebastian’s point of view because there is more story in him than we are yet allowed. I find it elevates the anticipation for more depth in her characters when she does this and it fuels the fire of chemistry. We do know through Tess that Scott is the “victim” of nepotism, and he isn’t entirely happy with his life. For all of his privilege, I imagine Scott is searching for more, for something real. That being said, Scott’s character is actually Paige’s manifestation of her power discussion. This is overt and intentional in her story. Paige uses his burgeoning relationship with Tess to discuss power at play. While Tess and Scott are steamy, they are also focused on ameliorating the potential abuse of power, and I don’t believe that Scott would be so thoughtful about it without Tess’s insistence on discussing it. Those are some of my favorite moments between these two, even beyond their fiery physicality.

As a heroine, Tessa Turani is a spitfire. Like the heroine of Working Girl (who incidentally is a Tess), Tessa is hardworking, insightful, and has just enough ambition to want more from life, to make a greater impact. Unfortunately, she isn’t born into wealth, and her struggles for “more” exist because she is a “have not.” Through her characterization, Paige highlights discussions on socioeconomic parity and the power assumed through a higher class. Interestingly enough, one of Tess’s oppressors is her “friend” and boss, Kendra, who honestly comes off as mean-spirited. Again, her character is filtered through Tess, so it’s possible that we might be missing an empathic side to her, but I’m thinking when we read Man in Love, we will find a snobbish, self-absorbed woman who doesn’t necessarily care for her friend. What is most important about Tess in Man in Charge is her ability to challenge Scott. She magnifies his privilege for him in her provocation of his power, which makes for the titillating physicality of her book. By the end of Man in Charge, Tess finds herself in an “oh #h*t” moment, and it is both exciting and groan-inducing because the end is not nigh for our characters.

One of my favorite parts of reading romance is an author’s intent. Some romances are crafted for smut, for getting lost in the $exual natures of its characters. Some romances are crafted to make you laugh. Other romances are crafted, however, to challenge your thinking through the subversion of reality into fiction. That is the case with Laurelin Paige’s newest book, Man in Charge. Yes, it’s more of what you love about Paige’s stories: clearly dominant male, an insightful female who challenges the male, and a whole lotta loving between the two. Yet, carefully threaded through their story is insight about life, about the truths of our world. And it’s there where Paige’s magic lies. If that is your type of romance (as it surely is mine), then run and one-click Man in Charge. But be forewarned. It’s a beginning, not an end.

In love and romance,

Professor A

The Sebastians own this city.

Hell, they own the whole world.

All I want is one little piece of it, a corner that I can call my own.

So when my boss runs away to “find herself”, I seize the opportunity and dive head first into the Sebastian’s glamorous universe. It’s everything I’ve ever wanted—fast paced and high stakes—and, even though I don’t fit in, I’m excellent at faking it.

Until I come face to face with the man in charge, Scott Sebastian, the arrogant, playboy heir with the mind of a devil and the body of a god and a mouth I can’t stop thinking about.

He’s infuriating. He’s a distraction. He’s the man who wants me in his bed as much as I want to be there.

And, if I get too close, he’ll be the one person who could expose me for what I really am—a fraud.

About the Author:
With millions of books sold worldwide, Laurelin Paige is a New York Times, Wall Street Journal and USA Today Bestselling Author. She is a sucker for a good romance and gets giddy anytime there’s kissing, much to the embarrassment of her three daughters. Her husband doesn’t seem to complain, however.

Webster, run and grab this dirty, dirty modern-day retelling of the Cinderella story. It’s the version of Cinderella that you never knew you needed in your romance-reading lives. So here goes:

  1. This is book 1 in a duet, I believe. This is not a complete story. I didn’t realize that when I was reading it. As the story hit 93%, and we hadn’t reached the “ball” yet, I knew I was in trouble because Webster leaves you hanging. Oh, how she leaves you hanging. There is still so much more to the story, and I can’t WAIT for Prince Charming, book 2.
  2. Ash Elliott and Winston Constantine are so deliciously dirty. If you go into this book looking for a higher message, it might be in this book under ideas about power and authority. But it’s used in a way to titillate you, not challenge your thinking. The chemistry between these two is off-the-charts, and you will need a panty change when you’re done.
  3. The true villains of the story could trigger you, so if you are sensitive to consent issues, then you should be prepared. Honestly, it made the traditionally villainous step-siblings even ickier than the popular renditions of Cinderella. Whereas in that version, Cinderella is made lowly through servitude. In this one, she is made lowly because she’s an attractive young woman with horrible triplet step-brothers who seek to “protect” her through pain. It feels all kinds of wrong, and your heart leaps for her safety in a way that it doesn’t with the traditional forms of Cinderella. In my mind, there is brilliance in that plot device.
  4. You will not be able to put this book down. There is something about Winston and Ash together that you can’t help but root for. As such, you press forward to a hopeful happy ending. Unfortunately, you will not find it in this book, but I’m still optimistic for them. I believe, however, that there is still more story that will feel heavy and complicated before the revelation of a future for them. One can only cross their fingers for it, though.

Again, I picked up K. Webster’s Stroke of Midnight knowing some truths about her storytelling, but I didn’t realize how much her book would engross me. I read it in one sitting because there is so much fire and chemistry and story between Winston and his “Cinderelliot.” I cannot wait for Prince Charming in January, which makes the next few months torturous. But again, I think Winston would love that.

In love and romance,

Stroke of Midnight by K Webster is now live!

From USA Today bestselling author K Webster comes a brand new forbidden romance that’s going to leave you speechless.
Money can buy anything. And anyone.
As the head of the Constantine family, I’m used to people bowing to my will. Cruel, rigid, unyielding–I’m all those things.
When I discover the one woman who doesn’t wither under my gaze, but instead smiles right back at me, I’m intrigued. Ash Elliott needs cash, and I make her trade in crudeness and degradation for it.
I crave her tears, her moans, her submission. I pay for each one. And every time, she comes back for more.
When she challenges me with an offer of her own, I have to decide if I’m willing to give her far more than cold hard cash. But love can have deadly consequences when it comes from a Constantine. At the stroke of midnight, that choice may be lost for both of us.
