✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 4 ⭐️ Review: Melanie Ting’s Snowballed ✍🏻

Overall Grade: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

Melanie Ting’s Snowballed does what most of the other Moo U stories don’t: allows us to dream over an Asian-American hero, one so self-possessed that you can’t help but love the depth of his seriousness. For me, as I reflected on Noah, I likened him to a character from Grey’s Anatomy: Nico Kim, the incredibly handsome, but serious orthopedic surgeon resident. Like Nico, Noah’s focus oftentimes diminishes his ability to live a full life. With that comes his perceived expectations from his father, a former NHL hockey star. When Noah determines that he cannot remove the shadow of his father and his brother’s successes with hockey, he makes a choice to join the Moo U Hockey team for his final playing season. His father, angered by his son’s choice, cuts him off financially, and Noah is forced to live and work on a farm so that he has a place to live. There, he meets the heroine of Snowballed, Zoe, a vibrant, seemingly happy, and positive go-getter of a heroine. What we find as this story progresses is Zoe’s exterior is a mask to hide a depth of grief that she has never fully processed. With Noah’s too serious, too disciplined persona and Zoe’s erstwhile identity, it’s obvious that they will be a fiery match.

Ting is so careful in crafting Zoe and Noah’s journeys. Noah’s freedom allows him to gain an independence that was lacking under his father’s plan. As he engages in farm work and skates for a team wildly different from his last, he begins to gain confidence in his decision-making that allows him to move past his father’s rules for his life. In that, he is able to self-advocate. Through Noah’s story, Ting deftly reminds her readers that people must make their own choices and live their best lives without regret.

Zoe’s story, while wrapped in a package of vivacity and ambition, illustrates the importance of the grieving process. At a surface level, Zoe works hard, always puts a smile on her face, and she radiates positivity. But there are cracks. As the story progresses, Noah uncovers those fractures. Through her story, we recognize the power of therapy to delve into the difficult parts of our lives. As Ting does with Noah, she aptly crafts a heroine who is seemingly strong and motivated on the outside but has a much darker inner spirit. Ting’s careful pacing of their story allows the story to be elaborated at the right timing.

Where the story suffers, though, is in the chemistry between Noah and Zoe. Honestly, I was never quite sure that Noah was passionate about Zoe. It’s clear that he grows to like her, but the depth of their “love” is difficult to believe, mostly because Noah reads like an automaton. And, as Zoe’s mental health unravels a bit, she reads as desperate for him. With Noah’s emotional distance and Zoe’s messy feelings, their chemistry gets lost to some degree. The epilogue for this story saves it, but I don’t feel a burning passion between Zoe and Noah, which might be difficult for some readers.

I love that Melanie Ting brought Noah into the World of True North. We need diverse characters with diverse backgrounds. With Noah, we are treated to part of the Japanese culture through his bachan. Beyond that, though, Zoe and Noah’s story about letting go of parental expectations is the meat and potatoes of Snowballed, and it’s a worthy read just on that measure.

In love and romance,

Timing is everything.

Presley Hale and Sebastian Vargas are no strangers to goodbye. Their high school summers were spent wrapped up in each other until she would inevitably go home to California. One season after college, Sebastian finally escaped the little Texas town to travel the world, and they said goodbye for what they thought might be the last time.

Sebastian went one way. Presley went the other.

For the first time in five years, they’re both in town, but the timing is no better than ever. So the only thing to do is what they do best. Keep it casual.

Friends with benefits.

They’ve done it before—doing it again will be easy.

But their hearts don’t get the memo.

When the lines of their arrangement blur, Presley and Sebastian are faced with decisions they’ve avoided for years. And that’s not even their biggest problem.

A small town in danger of failing.

A secret that could tear them apart.

And two hearts that can’t hide anymore.

They’ve shared so many summers, but none compare to what they’ll face.

Timing is everything.

And their time is almost up.

Staci has been a lot of things up to this point in her life — a graphic designer, an entrepreneur, a seamstress, a clothing and handbag designer, a waitress. Can’t forget that. She’s also been a mom, with three little girls who are sure to grow up to break a number of hearts. She’s been a wife, though she’s certainly not the cleanest, or the best cook. She’s also super, duper fun at a party, especially if she’s been drinking whiskey. When she’s not writing, she’s reading, sleeping, gaming, or designing graphics.

Excerpt:

Out of the car, I make my way to the front door, but Santino grabs me and presses me against the rough stucco of the house, between two trellises tangled with rose vines.

“I won’t let anything happen to you,” he says.

“Jesus Christ on the One True fucking Cross. How can you miss the entire point?” I push him away, lose my footing, and grab onto a trellis of thorns. “Fuck!”

Santino takes my palm and puts his handkerchief in it before closing my fingers into a fist. I hiss from the pain and his tenderness. They’re both unwelcome.

“Calm down,” he says.

“No.”

“Yes.”

I don’t have to dare him. His mouth presses firmly against mine, prying it open. I want to bite him, but he’s too strong and I’m too weak.

The world goes quiet for just a second. Eventually, I’ll hate myself for yielding, but not yet. The mental voice screaming for me to stop and grab Gia, run for the border grows silent the more Santino reins in his kisses from firm to soft, from commanding to offering.

My knees are weak and I’m so close to being a boat adrift. He can’t just kiss me and make this disappear. It won’t fix things. It won’t undo this obscenity of a life.

And yet, like a guy looking at a stolen artifact, I want to believe.

“This is how I make you calm down.” He leans past me and punches a code into the door’s keypad, then he pushes it open with his foot. He’s calmed me with a kiss, and now he’s going to bring a sweet, docile wife into his house.

“Fuck you.”

“That mouth.” His voice rumbles and breaks like a wave. “Why can’t you just be quiet sometimes?”

“You can’t make this go away by kissing me.”

He smirks, then steps just outside the door, holding his hand toward the entrance to our home.

I am suddenly hyper aware of every sound in the front yard. The night birds singing in the trees. Fountain water trickling into the pond. The whisper of the breeze in the leaves. It all adds up to a song of outside. Not just outdoors, but my existence outside the boundaries that have been set for me without me even knowing. My potential won’t fit inside his house. Inside, I’ll be a step closer to the captivity of his kisses, and one step further from freedom.

He waits as if he understands the importance of what I’m considering.

My thorn-bitten palm throbs when I tighten it around his handkerchief.

This story about my father is cute. The crown, the promise, the danger. It’s all a tidy dressing on a gaping wound. The missing pieces of an ancient crown are an excuse to take away what’s rightfully mine—my self-determination—not a reason.

I’m still committed to rescuing Gia and every girl like her, but once I walk through that door, I have to find a way to do it with him, or not at all.

“I know you’re still mad,” he says. “You can fight me inside, or maybe you’d like another round with the rosebushes?” He glances at my bleeding hand, then the tangle of flowers and thorns. “You’ll never change their mind though. They will always have thorns.”

He’s thinking of changing his mind? About what exactly? And is this a tease? Will he promise to help Gia, but never guarantee it?

Or does it simply mean there’s a chance?

A wave of confidence surges through my bloodstream, and I go through the doorway, into our house.

It’s us together or not at all.

Blurb:

Santino is my king. My lover. My husband.

He’s the head of the Cavallo crime family and the moment he choked my vows from me, my life was bound to his.

I’m done fighting my fate, until I hear two rumors, and I’m shaken to the core.

One rumor about the past—that I wasn’t the first bride Santino took.

Another about the future—a new bride is about to be taken.

Changing the old ways is like dousing the flames of hell with tears.

But I married the devil himself, and when I vowed to obey, I lied.

About the Author:

CD Reiss has a long history of aimlessly moving from place to place. She finally settled in Los Angeles where she earned a master’s degree in cinematic writing from USC. After graduation, she ultimately failed to have one line of dialog put on film, but stayed in Hollywood out of spite.

Since screenwriting was going nowhere, she switched to novels. Soon after, luck arrived with a complete set of baggage. She now has over two dozen titles under her belt. Two of those are NY Times Bestsellers and a handful more are USA Today bestsellers. Her audiobooks have won APA Audie Awards and Earphones Awards, swelling her ego to an inhuman size.

She lives with her family, two cats and her long-suffering husband in a small Hollywood house that’s been outfitted with huge, ego-sized doorways.

✍🏻 Goalkeeper by Andi Burns is HERE. If you love a shy goalkeeper and the campus party girl in love, then you’ll want this Moo U story. ✍🏻

Moo U Hockey: https://hearteyespress.com/wotn#/moo-u-hockey/
Cover Design: Christine Coffey

BLURB:

Winning games has always been his focus, but will winning her heart become the ultimate goal?

Everyone at Moo U knows the party doesn’t start until Paige Underwood arrives. Not only is she beautiful, she’s fun and charming too. Guys want to date her, and girls want to be her best friend. All Paige wants is to have a good time and make videos for her beauty channel–and maybe get that girl down the hall to do her eyeliner correctly. Is that too much to ask?

According to her parents, yes. They’ve said the party’s over and that it’s time to get focused.

Spencer Briggs knows all about focus. He’s had one goal since he set foot on the ice as a kid: make it to the NHL. After years of hard work and endless practice, he’s the starting goalie for Moo U and mere steps away from his dream. He can’t afford distractions, and isn’t interested in relationships. And he definitely can’t afford to flirt back with the gorgeous girl in his lit class.

He needs to stay serious. She needs to get serious. But now serious sparks are flying . . .

Excerpt:

My turn comes up again and it feels like the Drunk Jenga Gods are smiling down on me because the tile reads Handcuffs- L. From out of nowhere Emma grabs a pair of handcuffs and hooks one on Paige’s wrist and the other on mine. I can’t lie– they’re tight as hell and it’s entirely possible I’m losing circulation, but I don’t give a damn.

“Guess you’re stuck with me, huh?” I say.

“There are worse places to be.” She smiles back.

Holy Jesus. Remind me why I never go to parties?

Doyle picks the Mr. Rogers tile, and slips off his shoes. Then a girl whose name I don’t know (Ava, Ada?) chooses one that says Pick a stripper. I’m clueless as to what this might mean, until she points to me. Shit. Cheers and catcalls go up around me, and I guess this’ll teach me to be careful what I wish for.

The handcuffs prove a bit tricky and my shirt ends up dangling on the chain between Paige and me, but based on the appreciative looks I’m getting from her, I don’t mind at all. And yea, I have no time for dating, but if I did, I’d have a hardcore crush on Paige.

Emma and Andy duet “Don’t Stop Believin” (yes, he continues meowing) and we’re all feeling good.

The game continues and gets increasingly more ridiculous. I’m laughing my ass off at Herrera, a junior forward, who has to announce the next round of tiles like an auctioneer.

I’m laughing, that is until he reads Paige’s. “Kiss a stranger, kiss a stranger… Going once, going twice, sold to the blonde next to Briggsy,” his voice trails off as he points to Paige.

I stop cracking up because she turns to me, reaches up and kisses me like she was born to do it. As cliché as it sounds, the rest of the room melts away. I know we’re surrounded by a bunch of drunk, horny college students, but as she threads her fingers into my hair, I really don’t care. Needing closer contact, which is a little tough since I’ve got almost a foot on her, I reach down and place both hands at the base of her spine. She leans into me, craving the contact, too, and I pay no attention to the wolf-whistle that pierces the air and is surely directed toward us.

I deepen our kiss and she moans with pleasure. Pulling back, I look her in the eyes. “You’re fucking perfect,” I tell her before tasting her lips again. She melts into me, and it’s taking all the restraint I can muster not to lift her up, wrap her legs around my waist, and–

“Briggsy!” Zac shouts in my ear, startling me and breaking the kiss, “It’s your turn.”

Asshole.

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 4.5 ⭐️ Review: Sierra Hill’s Playmaker ✍🏻

Overall Grade: 4.5 ⭐️

Playmaker, another story in the World of True North Moo U series, illustrates the depth of storytelling developed in this expanded Sarina Bowen universe. Sierra Hill has captured the essence of Bowen’s college hockey players through her characterization of Callan “Church” and Aria. Aria has left her home in Minnesota to escape her father’s scandal, hoping that she can continue to work unimpeded onto the US Women’s Hockey team. Callan, the star center for the illustrious Moo U Men’s hockey team, is hoping to avoid women and relationships as he muddles his way through determining if his future is professional hockey. One is hungry for a future in hockey, while the other isn’t sure given his own father’s professional hockey lifestyle. When Callan “saves” Aria from one of his drunk teammates, there is an instant connection even though they both fight it. As the book progresses, that attraction grows like a wildfire in a dry field, and they must decide if they can have a future together.

One of the things I loved about Hill’s Playmaker is its focus on the disparity between men’s and women’s sports. This has been a common theme in several of the Moo U stories that feature the Moo U female hockey players. All that Aria wants is to play on the US Women’s Hockey Team because it’s a last attempt to continue playing hockey given there are no viable professional hockey options for women. Hill deftly contrasts Callan’s experience in that he has the opportunity to play professional hockey, but takes that opportunity for granted. In the space of this book, Hill illustrates the dichotomy of this situation, and it challenges the reader’s understanding of professional sports and its inequity.

I also loved her characters. Aria and Callan are incredibly likable even when Callan tries to spurn Aria. Hill helps us understand his intention even if it’s frustrating. However, once these two fall accept their attraction for each other, their relationship is easy. They complement each other, and friendship and the kindred interest in hockey are foundational to their coupling. While the story itself plays out with its complications, Callan and Aria’s eventual happy ending becomes the salve for the tension of Hill’s story.

Sierra Hill’s Playmaker impressed me. It is a perfect addition to the Moo U series, adding more stories and depth to the World of True North. If you love hockey romance, then you’ll love Aria and Callan’s story.

In love and romance,

Professor A

BLURB:

She needs Prince Farming . . . but she got me instead.

Sure, life’s been easy for me. Growing up in an oceanside house in SoCal, playing top-level college hockey, driving a luxury car with a generous allowance—sounds like the dream, right? Turns out what I didn’t have was freedom. And when I decided to transfer to Moo U for my last year of hockey, my controlling father cut me off.

No money, no car, no friends. I’m just another student struggling to make ends meet. The only place I can afford to live is the Meyers’ farm, where I’ll work in exchange for room and board. Farm work is so exhausting that I don’t even have time to wallow in the crappy turn my life has taken. Zoe Meyers is a hot blonde Amazon with all the energy of a chipmunk on crack. And her positivity is making me realize how lucky I really am, even though I’m broke. Too bad she’s not impressed by a guy who can’t figure out which end of a goat to milk.

Because suddenly I want to impress her. I want to do a lot more with her too . . . if I can get her out of the barn and into my arms.

Excerpt:

I’m the one who gets to take you home.” Helen has reappeared with a full drink. She’s swaying slightly.

“I don’t think you should be driving,” Noah says.

Helen lifts one finger. “Correct. So you’ll have to sleep over instead.”

Noah raises an eyebrow. “Thanks, but that’s not a good idea. Zoe, let me know when you’re leaving.”

I check my watch. “Now. Probably too early for you, right?”

“Nope. I like to get enough sleep during the season.” He looks over at the bleary Helen. “I guess we better take her home first.”

His level of consideration for Helen surprises me. “Okay, I’m still parked at the arena, so we can drop her on the walk there.”

I say goodbye to Rocky, and Noah shuffles Helen over to the front door.

“Zoe,” a voice calls out. It’s Martin. “Are you going already?”

“Yeah. I live out in Shelburne, so it’s a bit of a drive.”

He swallows. “Well, um, maybe you can give me your contact info. I can send you my mom’s pickle recipe.”

Noah snorts, but I ignore him and exchange numbers with Martin.

“I’m sure Martin has a very impressive pickle.” Noah starts in as soon as we’re outside. Helen is on the other side of him. She’s hanging onto his arm like she’s Tarzan and he’s a vine.

“He’s a farmer. Well, his family has a farm. They’re converting from corn to soybeans.” Stop babbling, Zoe. Gah.

“That’s probably safer. Martin looks a lot like a stalk of corn. Wouldn’t want a farm accident.”

I bite my lip to keep from giggling. Martin is thin and pale, and his light blond hair is unfortunately spiked at the top. “You’re so funny. Not. I do want that recipe. Martin and I have a shared interest in canning.” If I practiced for hours, I could not sound lamer.

“Maybe a shared interest in caning would be more fun?” Noah suggests.

I ignore him. People like to make fun of old-fashioned preserving methods but when it’s time to eat they’re happy to enjoy them. And I’m trying hard not to wonder whether Noah has an interest in caning. Yow.

“Do you know how hot you are, Noah?” Helen pipes up.

At least he has the decency to blush. “Uhh, no.”

“It’s true.” Helen blinks at me. “Even Zoe admitted that you’re the hottest guy she’s ever met in real life.”

He grins and winks at me. “Is that a fact?”

“Yeah, and she never finds any guys cute, so…” Helen’s voice trails off before she can embarrass me further.

“I also said you have the biggest ego of anyone I’ve ever met,” I tell him.

“But is it ego if I actually am that wonderful?” Noah asks.

Helen pulls at his jacket. “I have a question. Why do you wear so many clothes? You would look better in less clothes.”

While I agree with Helen in theory, I already know the answer to this one. He’s cold, and it’s only September. By the time it’s January, he’s going to look like the Michelin man.

Noah doesn’t even answer Helen, but she’s undeterred. She yanks on his sleeve until his jacket comes half-off. He swears and tries to get his jacket back, but instead, Helen pulls it off completely and totters away, swinging it over her head.

“No good deed goes unpunished,” mutters Noah. While I should be sympathetic, I’m busy being transfixed by the gap of skin revealed at the unbuttoned bottom of his shirt. Is that a happy trail?

Noah notices where I’m looking and swiftly buttons and tucks in his shirt.

“Show’s over,” he says. We’re now at Helen’s place. Noah manages to retrieve his jacket and get Helen safely in her apartment without being further molested. In no time, we’re back in the car and on the road.

“I’m surprised you didn’t jump at the chance for a sleepover,” I say.

“I prefer my partners to be fully conscious.”

I swallow and try to ignore the sudden spark in my lower body. Fully conscious sex with Noah would be both scary and amazing.

Transferring to a new school under false pretenses is harder than I expected, especially when my cocky new housemate, Callan Thomas, annoys me at every pass. He’s treated like a god and revered by everyone on campus. Too bad he made me feel like a rejected fool the first night we met.

But that doesn’t stop me from accepting his offer to become his fake girlfriend, because he has skills that I need. Only Callan can help me improve my game and make the USA women’s hockey team.

I try to keep despising him, but he keeps proving my first impression was wrong. And the more time I spend with him, the more complex my feelings become. I need to tell him the truth about who I really am before anyone finds out and things go too far.

Problem is, I think they already have…

Excerpt:

It’s like the cap has been unscrewed from a bottle of soda, because inside me the fizz and excitement of talking with this beautiful and captivating girl bubbles through my blood.

I offer my hand between us. “People call me Church. What’s your name?”

She raises her eyes to me, extending her arm to place her warm hand inside my palm, where I gently cup it in mine. She’s soft and warm and I know her prickly attitude is a defense meant to throw me off.

“I’m Aria. And Is Church your last name?”

I tip my head to the side, cocking an eyebrow. “You’ve never heard of me?”

Most people at the school know who I am. Hockey is a big deal around these parts and the Moo U hockey team is royalty. Unless she’s new or a freshman, she’d certainly know who I am. And based on the statement on her tank top, she knows hockey.

By deduction, that must mean she’s new or lying, but I can’t figure out her angle or what she’d gain.

She could just be messing with me as a joke. Maybe she was sent by one of the guys to prank me.

Aria shakes her head, some of her golden-spun hair spilling over her shoulder.

“I’m new to Burlington University this semester. In fact, I just arrived today.”

I laugh. “Well, welcome. And please don’t take this the wrong way, but I need to introduce you to one of the campus colloquialisms. Nobody calls it Burlington University. We refer to it as Moo U.”

She nods curiously, considering the validity of my suggestion, but then seems to think twice about it. “You’re serious? Moo U? Huh. Weird.”

I let out a hearty laugh and raise my hands in surrender. “I swear. Ask anyone. The school is well-known for its agricultural studies. We are in Vermont cow country. Surrounded by dairy farms and apple orchards.”

“Okay, if you say so, Church,” she says drolly, a hint of a smile around her full lips. “So, are you going to tell me why everyone calls you Church?”

I run a hand down my short beard, a reminder I still need to shave it off before the semester starts.

“Well, as you may have guessed, I’m a hockey player. Starting center. And the name was established when I played in juniors, when a kid said playing against me was just liking going to church.” I slap my hands together in a prayer position, giving her my best impression of a dutiful churchgoer. “Because when my opponents faceoff against me, they kneel and pray.”

She laughs in a fit of hysterics at this. Like seriously, full-on belly laugh, clutching at her stomach and throwing her head forward to her knees.

And I realize I think I’ve met my match.

How utterly inconvenient.

Releasing: June 24, 2021

Two strangers.
Two words.
One unforgettable summer…

When you’re an artist, everything has to be perfect.

Or so I thought, until my professor told me my perfection was boring and unoriginal. Studying abroad in Florence has taught me one thing: I know nothing when it comes to what makes art truly beautiful.

So, with my professor’s words in my ear, I step outside one evening and decide to say yes to any and everything I’m faced with until the sun rises.

Of course, I didn’t expect him to show up.

Liam Benson, the broody, sexy, tortured artist from my class who I can’t stand. He’s got a sour outlook on the world and an ego so big no one could properly stroke it to his satisfaction.

When he finds out what I’m doing, he hijacks my “yes” night.
And after just twelve hours with him, I’m desperate for more.

But Liam is running from more than I could ever understand, and with his heart guarded and mind made up about life, I don’t stand a chance.

I convince myself that we can keep it casual.
But walking away from him at the end of the summer is as impossible as painting outside the lines.

I used to think when you’re an artist, everything has to be perfect.

Turns out everything has to be painful, and messy, and fleeting.

If only I’d known that before I fell under Liam Benson’s spell.

 Meet Kandi

Kandi Steiner is a bestselling author and whiskey connoisseur living in Tampa, FL. Best known for writing “emotional rollercoaster” stories, she loves bringing flawed characters to life and writing about real, raw romance — in all its forms. No two Kandi Steiner books are the same, and if you’re a lover of angsty, emotional, and inspirational reads, she’s your gal.

An alumna of the University of Central Florida, Kandi graduated with a double major in Creative Writing and Advertising/PR with a minor in Women’s Studies. She started writing back in the 4th grade after reading the first Harry Potter installment. In 6th grade, she wrote and edited her own newspaper and distributed to her classmates. Eventually, the principal caught on and the newspaper was quickly halted, though Kandi tried fighting for her “freedom of press.” She took particular interest in writing romance after college, as she has always been a die hard hopeless romantic, and likes to highlight all the challenges of love as well as the triumphs.

When Kandi isn’t writing, you can find her reading books of all kinds, talking with her extremely vocal cat, and spending time with her friends and family. She enjoys live music, traveling, anything heavy in carbs, beach days, movie marathons, craft beer and sweet wine — not necessarily in that order.
