Lexi Blake’s Treasured is more of her fantastic Masters and Mercenaries series. This novella is a quick read filled with her brand of romantic suspense mixed with a little D/s steam. This is David Hawthorne and Tessa’s story. As we’ve found in other stories in the series, Tessa was slated to marry Michael Malone of Malone Oil. However, their engagement fell apart when Tessa and Michael realized they were better as friends than lovers. As Tessa enters Treasured, she’s carrying the weight of guilt associated with calling off the relationship with Michael. As such, she has a huge wall built up emotionally. 

David Hawthorne, the stepson of Sean Taggart, is a prolific professor who is studying an Argentinian mogul. Friends with his son, he’s heading out on his Spring Break to visit the island of this man as a way to write a biography about him. Unfortunately, he is related to a Taggart, so his family wants him protected. David and Tessa meet earlier in the story and feel deeply attracted to each other; however, Tessa realizes David’s background and believes it will be the same type of relationship as the one with Michael. She ends up ghosting him until she becomes assigned to be his bodyguard for his trip. Reticent yet required, Tessa and David journey to the island of his friend’s father only to be met eventually with danger. Will Tessa drop her walls? Will David make it out of the danger on the island?

I think it’s a requirement of a Lexi Blake book to make you work for her couples’ happy endings. Everything you love about this series is here: a keen attraction between her hero and heroine, a hero who falls fairly quickly for the heroine, a heroine who is reticent to develop a relationship with the hero but she can’t deny her attraction to him, a suspenseful story that keeps you turning the pages, and a D/s relationship between the hero and heroine that spices up the suspense of this story? There is a reason that Big Tag reminds his operatives about protection because, over and over again, Lexi Blake’s Masters and Mercenaries characters’ attractions cannot be denied. Tessa and David are more of this. 

I love the complex characterization of David in this book. He struggles with his position in his family. He’s a true academic who gets lost in his work, and he’s the opposite of his persona in the bedroom. If there is one thing I love the most about Blake’s development of him is his willingness to accept Tessa as she is. This man is tenacious, and it’s wrapped in a professorial package. He sees Tessa in a way that Michael would have never been able to see her, and therefore, they are fated for each other. 

The frustration of Treasured is the complications that Tessa makes for the two of them. I think Blake let Tessa sit too long in her reticence. That being said, she is a strong, independent, willful woman which is important in any story. 

Overall, Treasured is the type of story you expect of Lexi Blake. It’s a quick read that has a fulfilling happily ever after for her David and Tessa.

Overall Grade: 4.5 ⭐️

Oh, how I’ve missed Jana Aston’s brand of storytelling. With her newest book, The Next Mrs. Russo, her signature is scrawled all over this story. As she so deftly does, Aston takes a one-person POV and she makes you crave more of her story. This romance follows Audrey, a skilled seamstress/designer who repurposes old designer clothing into new, reenvisioned fashion. With a sidekick of a teenager, Miller, as her unofficial assistant and a grumpy cat named Gary, Audrey’s life feels a little bit bumbling but satisfied. Until one day when an older woman, Mrs. Bianchi, enters her store and eventually manipulates a meeting out of her with her son. When Audrey finally meets “Warren,” she realizes that he is her crush and the governor of New York. Agreeing to accompany Warren to a fundraiser, Audrey’s hope is a quick hook-up with a return to her struggling life of design. One date turns into a second one, and soon enough, Audrey finds herself living in the governor’s mansion while Warren fixes the plumbing of her home. Will the governor fall for Audrey as she begins to fall for him, or does he just tolerate her as a “fake” date for his many fundraisers?

At its core, The Next Mrs. Russo is a story that leaves you on a smile. Every turn of the page elicited a chuckle or a grin as Aston’s heroine, Audrey, reveals more of herself. If you’re looking for Warren’s point of view here, you will only find it through the voice of Audrey. This is a common trait of Aston’s romances. And her heroines, ones such as Audrey, are always erstwhile and effervescent even in the midst of their troubles. You can’t help but love a character like Audrey because she’s a little crazy in all the best ways. If I have any criticism, it would be that I’d love a foray into Warren’s brain. 

In this book, Warren is staid, terse albeit $exy. The things that Audrey finds attractive about him would make someone else laugh as they aren’t the usual fare. It’s what makes her attraction to him one of the hilarious parts of the book. Yet, we receive very little from him until the last portion of the story. It’s what builds the anticipation of Aston’s The Next Mrs. Russo. 

Overall, I enjoyed myself with this book. If you’re having a difficult day, month, year, then you want this one on your e-reader. It’s exactly what you need to save you from the doldrums of life.

How many chances does a girl get to kiss her crush? Not many, if any. This is a prime kiss opportunity. A kissortunity. Also, he smells good. And he’s right here. If I just leaned forward we’d be kissing and I wouldn’t have to spend the rest of my life wondering what it would be like to kiss him. And he’s clearly not going to take the lead.

So I do it. I lean in, my fingers gripping the edge of his desk so I don’t topple into his lap, much as I might enjoy that, my head tilted just a fraction to the right, and press my lips against his. He doesn’t move, save for the small intake of breath the moment before my lips touched his, the moment it was clear I was about to do what I’m doing. He’s perfectly still. And his lips are perfect.

And.

That’s it.

“Huh,” I say, leaning back, a bit disappointed to be honest.

“What was that?” He’s staring at me, a bit of confusion clouding his expression.

“It was a kiss. But it wasn’t how I imagined it.”

“You imagined kissing me?” Warren looks like he’s a few steps behind on this entire exchange. He also looks mildly offended by my review of said kiss. “You surprised me,” he adds, his tongue sweeping his lower lip.

“I’m a surprising girl, it’s true,” I agree, but I’m looking anywhere but at him. Good Lord, did I really just kiss him? I did. And it wasn’t even worth it. It was kinda weird. Obviously awkward. And now I have to walk-of-shame out of the governor’s office. To the guest bedroom. Though it was just a kiss, so my exit will be closer to a slither of mortification than a full walk. So, at least there’s that.

“You’re too young.”

“For kissing?” My eyes fly back to his. “I’m twenty-seven,” I clarify. Then I make it weird by adding, “Gov.” Why am I like this? Seriously, why? And why did I push my luck and kiss him?

Stupid, stupid kissortunity. I’m gonna take my cat and go home.

“You’re entirely inappropriate for me.”

“Mmm-hmm,” I murmur in agreement, already starting the slide off his desk, trying to recall where I last saw Gary.

“We’re hardly compatible.”

“Right,” I agree because ‘inappropriate’ and ‘incompatible’ are words I’m very familiar with. He should be adding It’s not me, it’s you, any second now. I’m on my feet now, eyeing the door.

“Wait.” He stands, effectively trapping me between him and the desk a moment before I can escape. “You surprised me,” he repeats.

“So you said,” I quip.

“Caught me off guard,” he adds, as if the meaning of ‘surprised’ is unclear. Our eyes catch and a flicker of uncertainty or apprehension crosses his face before he mutters, “Fuck it,” and then he’s cupping my jaw with his hand and lowering his lips to mine.
