Author Brittainy Cherry Writes Her Own Mixtape
Hi, Everyone! I’m Brittainy Cherry, author of The Mixtape, a contemporary romance novel. I am so excited to share Oliver and Emery’s story with you all. These two characters are both struggling through life in their own ways, and it is through music and love that they find their way back to themselves and each other.
The Mixtape could’ve never come together without my own mixtape of sorts to help guide the way to this novel. Music not only plays a huge role in the story, but also in my personal life, so of course I had to whip up my own mixtape as I wrote this story. For example, my playlist began with “Godspeed” by the extremely talented James Blake that set the mood of the story. His tones and lyrics wrapped me up into a warm hug and I allowed the song to move me as I crafted Oliver’s character.
Then, we moved into “Soldiers” by Rachel Platten which is a powerful song about taking moments to breathe in order to move forward for another day, like soldiers in the night. It’s a song that showcases the strength of our heroine, Emery, who is a single mother, trying her best to create a better life for her young daughter.
I had the best time tying in songs like “Slow Dance” by AJ Mitchell (feat. Ava Max) to show the slow burn between Emery and Oliver falling together, followed by their first kiss being written to the song, “Can I Kiss You?” by Dahl.
The whole story was wrapped up with a classic, “Could It Be I’m Falling In Love” by the Spinners, which sums up what I hope you experience reading this novel: a mixtape of emotions which lead to you falling in love with the love story of Emery and Oliver. I hope this novel heals you the same way music soothes my soul.
The Mixtape Excerpt
Sometimes the world didn’t make sense. No parent should’ve ever had to bury their own child. I couldn’t even imagine that kind of pain that raced through her heartbeats on a daily basis. If I could offer up only one set of prayers for the remainder of my life, it would be for the parents who had to say goodbye too early on to their own.
Those hearts would always beat a little slower in my mind.
“I’m so sorry, Michelle.”
“Thank you, sweetheart.” She reached out and patted my hand, and I knew it was because she needed a hand to hold. So, I wrapped both of mine around hers. “The mourning doesn’t get easier. It just get quieter. Some days, I still cannot get out of bed, but I’m blessed. Because Richard stays in bed with me and my quietness. Then, when it’s time for me to get up, he pulls me to my feet, and we dance. A piece of advice—find yourself a man who would dance with you even when your heart is broken.” Her eyes flashed with tears and she held my hands tighter. “You want to know a secret?”
“Yes.”
“I thought I was going to lose Oliver, too. He kept everyone so far away. So, when I flew out here, I prepared myself for the worst. I thought he’d be in a drunken slumber or, worse…so much worse. Last time I came a few weeks ago, he wasn’t doing too well. But this time? This time I came back and he’s smiling.”
“That’s so good.”
She smiled brightly up at me as tears freely danced down her cheekbones. “So thank you.”
“I didn’t do anything,” I swore.
“You’re the only difference in his life since I came back. Plus, there’s the way he looks at you when you’re not looking. Now, sweetheart, I don’t know what you did, but I’m almost positive that you helped bring my son back to life after he was holding death’s hand. Call it my mother’s intuition. So, thank you for helping him. Even if it’s just by being his friend.”
Now I was tearing up, and I pulled her into a tight hug. “You’re an amazing mother,” I whispered, and she began to cry harder.
“You have no clue how hard it is to believe that each day.”
I think all mothers thought that. The ones who doubted her mothering skills, were sometimes the ones who were trying their best day in and day out. I didn’t expect the conversation with Michelle to go the direction that it had, but I was glad it had taken that path, because it was clear we both had some healing corners of our heart that had to be touched that evening.
“Oh, don’t tell me you two are wine drunk and emotion,” Richard cut in, walking in our direction. “We were just picking out a song for two seconds and we turn around to find you both moping.”
“Oh hush, Richard. Can’t us girls have a moment every now and again?” Michelle remarked, standing to her feet.
“Yes, but for now, we dance to The Spinners, my lady.” Richard reached out for his wife and took her into his arms as they began swaying to the song, Could It Be I’m Falling In Love. Richard serenaded Michelle as she smiled and melted into him like a perfectly fit puzzle piece.
Oliver came to stand beside me as we both watched his parents fall more and more in love with one another.
“This was their wedding song,” Oliver mentioned. “Dad recorded it, and they danced to it for their first dance.”
“Oh my gosh, how sweet is that,” I swooned. True romance.
“They dance to it every single night. On the good days and bad days. Especially on the bad days.”
“They’re what I want my love to look like,” I confessed. Oliver gave me a tight smile but didn’t say anything. I shifted around for a minute before looking toward him once more. “Do you want to dance with me?”

Summary
Emery has never felt more alone. Raising her daughter is both her pleasure and her pain as she struggles to hold on to her job as a bartender and keep a roof over their heads. With no one to help them—no support system—any unexpected expense or late bill could turn their whole world upside down.
Reeling from the death of his twin brother and bandmate, rock star Oliver Smith is trying to drink his problems away. Apparently he isn’t very good at it; they follow him wherever he goes. Also in hot pursuit are the paparazzi, who catch Oliver at his lowest low.
He could have walked into any bar in California, but he walked into hers. Emery helps Oliver lose the crowd, and they find themselves alone: two people whose paths are marked with loss and pain. However, they hold an unshakable hope for healing. They find solace together, but can their love withstand the world?

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 4.5 ⭐️ Review: Kristen Ashley’s After the Climb ✍🏻
Overall Grade: 4.5 ⭐️
I have been in a serious Kristen Ashley binge-read/listen as of late. As her books come on sale, I gobble them up, and I’ve been trying to figure out why I’m drawn to her because she has her own style in the world of romance. When I think about her stories, I think about her depth of storytelling. She gives her readers everything about her characters, and her epilogues, for example, go on forever, which is FANTASTIC because you HATE leaving her characters. She draws these characters that feel fictional and real in equal measure. She’s crafted heroes who are incredibly masculine yet have a sensitivity for their heroines. She’s created heroines who stand in their independence even when their lives are falling apart. Once the hero and heroine begin falling for each other, it’s over. That’s it. They will be together until the end. Ashley will keep you engaged in her story through the twists and turns of the story, but the foundational piece of her stories is her couples’ undying love for each other. And she has a capacity for creating ancillary characters who REQUIRE their own stories. She draws readers into later books by giving you a taste at the end of the story you’ve just finished. Now, I’ve seen some reviewers who say, “it’s all the same over and over again.” However, there is a comfort in the way that Kristen Ashley builds her stories and their series. I trust that I will get a depth of storytelling from Ashley that will keep me engaged in her book over and over again, and I love that.
I missed After the Climb over the pandemic. I found Kristen Ashley late, so to get a copy of this book, I didn’t know what to expect. What I found is more of Ashley’s world-building. I finished After the Climb ready for more stories because this book has set the tone for the rest of the series.
I love this book. I predict Genny/Gen/Imogen and Duncan/Dun/Bowie will be a beloved couple in Ashley’s world of romance, This is a second chance romance. They are not young, yet they are not old in number. The way that these two come together and reconcile is sweet.
It’s so hard to write this review because there was so much I loved about After the Climb. For one, there are several points of view in this story. I think the foundational voice of this series will be Corey’s the other best friend to Genny and Duncan. I want to see where Kristen Ashley takes this because I found it interesting that, through his perspective, his choices make sense. It takes much of the book to realize that. Ashley makes you wait for this.
Secondly, the combined families of Genny and Duncan are adorable. Like seriously. I need stories for Sully, Gage, Chloe (it’s coming in Chasing Serenity), Sasha, and Corey’s son, Hale. I think it might be nice to have a story for Tom, Genny’s ex, but I could live without it to be honest. But see what she does…see how she invests you in her characters because she makes them feel like friends or relatives. You become rabid for their journey and their happy ending. Her ability to craft characters that are likable and interesting is Ashley’s superpower.
Here’s the thing. I didn’t want to put this story down. I don’t care what anyone says because there is something interesting about this new series. Add in Hollywood and Phoneix and Duncan’s connection to the environment, and you find a story in After the Climb that has just touched a small portion of the mountain of series yet to come.
If you’re a Kristen Ashley fan, then you need to read this book. I’m pretty sure I’m the last one to the table, though. I can’t wait for the next story in this series.

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 4.5 ⭐️ Review: Lucy Score’s Riley Thorn and the Corpse in the Closet ✍🏻
Overall Grade: 4.5 ⭐️
I’ve been trying to find the words to tell people why they should be reading Lucy Score. Honestly, her books are a trojan horse of storytelling. See, here’s the thing. When you pick up a book like her newest story, Riley Thorn and the Corpse in the Closet, and you launch into the story, at its rom-comesque surface, it’s seemingly zany. Riley Thorn, the heroine, is a psychic. She’s not thrilled with her gift, so she goes into different situations where people need her to use her psychic abilities, and she begrudgingly agrees. She fights the use of her gift. This leads to all kinds of issues. Add to that an overprotective new boyfriend in Nick, a cadre of senior citizen roommates who are out of control, a family of gifted mystics, a grandmother with an iron fist, trying to control Riley’s use of her gifts, a large farting dog, a strange smell from next door, and the murders of some not-upstanding humans to the mix, and, to me, it feels very out of control. Every turn of the page brings another twist for Riley who is trying to negotiate a new relationship, find some alone time with him, and maintain her autonomy over her gift. This story is heavy with story and characterization; its feel is light. But that’s the Trojan horse of Score’s writing because belying that zany story are a couple of life truths.
For one, Lucy Score uses the murders of internet trolls to highlight the insensitivity and mean-spiritedness between humans. Interestingly enough, Score kills two of these people in the story and she threatens a couple more, and I think you’re meant to consider the ways that we treat each other, especially through the computer. Score presents these deaths in a way that makes us laugh in her fiction, but there is a graver truth to its existence: these unkind characters forgot empathy and compassion for humankind through their online behavior. And we’re supposed to think about that, I believe.
Secondly, Riley is such an interesting character. She’s beautiful, quirky, intelligent, and independent. Since Nick has committed himself to her, and as a consequence of the happenings of the first book of this series, out of his worry, he makes choices that undermine her agency, her ability to make her own decisions. And Riley fights this. In doing so, there aren’t dramatic issues with their relationship in this book; any angst of Riley Thorn… lies in the revelation of the story. What Lucy Score does is create a conversation around Nick’s male instinct to protect Riley so that she can maintain her independence while respecting Nick’s fear over her. These conversations feel important in the world of romance, even rom-coms, when male characters can often undermine the decisions of the heroines.
Additionally, because Riley struggles with the responsibility behind her psychic ability, there is a message about doing your best even when you worry that you will fail. Some of Riley’s insecurities about being a psychic lie in her worry that she won’t perform well. It takes much of the book for her to realize that she has to try first, do her very best, and accept the results.
All of the qualities of Lucy Score’s Riley Thorn and the Corpse in the Closet make for a story that will simply make you smile. With the weekend ahead of us, why wouldn’t you want to read a story that will make you laugh out loud and remind you that being kind to others makes for a better world?
In love and romance,

The rules.
What’s at stake.

I just wish the Fortune Cookie People had considered how hard the whole “knowing when to quit” would be to carry out when a woman like me is gambling with her feelings.
Heart-palpitating, vageen-tingling, butterflies-in-my-belly feelings for a noncommittal, hot-as-sin player by the name of Jude Winslow.
After a crazy night where we were both pretending to be someone else, I’ve found myself immersed in the fun of the fling.
The thrill.
The irresistible charm.
The pleasure of being with a man like him.

I know the rules and I know the stakes, oh wise Fortune Cookie.
Now I’d just like to know how close to self-destruction I have to get before I find the will to quit Jude Winslow.

The assignment is simple.
Don’t let the client die.
Don’t let her get kidnapped.
Don’t sleep with her.
It’s the last part that unexpectedly complicates things for me after I’m introduced to the most beautiful and brilliant woman I could’ve ever envisioned.
And it only gets worse when we have to stash ourselves away in a small town where our calculated cover is to be a recently engaged couple.
My new mission is now significantly harder.
Don’t let her hate what’s for dinner.
Don’t let anyone else make her laugh more than I do.
And, most importantly, don’t let myself actually fall for someone again.
After all, my job isn’t to love my boss’s sister.
It’s to stop an unidentified threat from taking her – or die trying.
