✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 4.5 ⭐️ Review: Annika Martin’s Just Not That Into Billionaires ✍🏻

Overall Grade: 4.5 ⭐️

“We trusted each other. We protected each other’s weirdness. It’s one of the things that I have with Francine. We’re inside looking out. Together.”

I adore Annika Martin’s brand of rom-coms. For one, her newest book, Just Not That Into Billionaires, brings another story in her series of standalones focused around other billionaire stories. The thing is…those billionaires who are seemingly attractive, alpha-males are usually riddled with insecurities that they hide behind their genius. Usually, they have a soft underbelly of emotional insecurity, so they hide it behind a gruff, billionaire-esque exterior. What makes these stories heartfelt and warm are the heroines of the story. They are usually quirky, insightful, and brave to take on these alpha-looking billionaires. And what happens is rom-com magic with billionaires becoming vulnerable and heroines becoming loved beyond all measure.

And her newest book is no different.

The story follows Francine, resident ballerina of 341 West 45th Street. She has finally realized her dreams. She’s become a soloist in a new ballet which will tour the world, taking her to Spain where she has envisioned herself dancing at the ruins of Merida’s Roman Theatre. She has lived for this opportunity; however, when everything seems settled, she finds out that she is married, and her visa paperwork is endangering her tour. Told that she must handle it immediately, she investigates her “marriage” as she isn’t aware that she is married. She finds out, with the help of her 45th street friends, that she married Benny, the tech guy from a stint in Vegas ten years earlier. Intent on asking him for a divorce to remedy her visa issue, she finds him, only to realize he has become a tech billionaire in their decade apart. Bashful and unnerved, she finds him and asks him for a divorce, only for Benny to tell her that he will only grant the divorce if she agrees to act as his wife for three weeks, the length of time to complete a deal. This becomes the perfect set-up for two people attracted to each other fighting their feelings. Do they have a future together or will Benny let Francine go at the end of the three weeks?

So the foundation of this story is misunderstandings. Over and over again, Benny believes he knows Francine, that he has read her correctly. For almost 90% of the book, Martin treats us to all the ways that Benny has it all wrong. It takes most of the book for their issues to be resolved, but in the meantime, Martin writes a story where two people want each other deeply but feel as though they can’t have each other.

Benny is such an interesting character. Honestly, Martin never says this in the story, but if I didn’t know any better, Benny feels like a character on the spectrum. He struggles to fully understand people around him even though he trusts his gut with situations.  This works for him except with Francine. This, of course, creates all kinds of funny and dramatic situations that pull you deep into their story. He’s interesting because he is probably one of the nerdiest billionaires in Martin’s stable of billionaires, yet he hides it behind a carefully constructed debonair exterior. And it’s that exterior that Francine hates. She loves the old Benny: the one who is singularly focused, awkward, and her attractive frenemy.

This makes Francine such a delightful heroine in this story. When Benny protects himself against her, using his alpha-male persona to hide his vulnerability, Francine hates it. She likes weird Benny. She likes everything that makes him different from everyone else. She has such a heart of gold in this story with him and her young dancers, and you cannot help but fall deeply in love with Francine.

But what I think I love the most about Just Not That Into Billionaires is the way that Francine and Benny are so much alike. Martin makes it clear from the beginning that, while they seem like frenemies, they have a drive and ambition for one focus: her’s is dancing and his is tech. This means that, essentially, they understand and empathize with the other.  This is their connection, the tie that binds them together. It’s the reason that they are attracted to each other from the start. It’s their bumbling misreads of the other that keep them apart and lend gravity to this delightful rom-com.

For me, Annika Martin cannot go wrong with her storytelling. I adore this world that she’s created, and Francine and Benny are a perfect addition to it. If you’re looking for a fun, sweet, steamy rom-com, then you should read Just Not That Into Billionaires now.

In love and romance,

Professor A

✍🏻 Check out the new cover for Stella and Levi. Staci Hart’s Champange Problems is a new title and cover. ✍🏻

The Bright Young Things have a brand new look! Stella and Levi are all polished up and ready for new readers! Have you been waiting to read this one? Well, check out the blurb below and get ready to swoon.

Amazon | AppleBooks | Kobo | B&N | Goodreads

The last thing I’m looking for is a guy.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m a big fan. But after my ex sent my heart through a wood chipper, I need a minute.

Which is why Levi is such a problem.

When the smokeshow walks into my party, there’s no avoiding him. He looks at me like I’m a juicy, rare steak, and he hasn’t had a meal in a week.

Pretty sure he’ll devour me. All I have to do is give him permission.

We’re from different worlds—he’s leather jackets and motorcycles, and I’m a trust fund kid hailing from the Upper East—but that’s not our biggest problem.

I’m pretty sure he has a secret.

A secret that could bring down my entire world.

I wasn’t looking for a guy, but the guy found me.

And neither my heart nor my secrets are safe.

Staci has been a lot of things up to this point in her life — a graphic designer, an entrepreneur, a seamstress, a clothing and handbag designer, a waitress. Can’t forget that. She’s also been a mom, with three little girls who are sure to grow up to break a number of hearts. She’s been a wife, though she’s certainly not the cleanest, or the best cook. She’s also super, duper fun at a party, especially if she’s been drinking whiskey. When she’s not writing, she’s reading, sleeping, gaming, or designing graphics.

Strength.

That single word is what I’ve relied on now more than ever. Strength keeps me going. Strength makes me get up every day.

Even with the pain.

It was my dad’s job. He was the founder and CEO of the best tech company. But with his death, it’s now mine. And I’m damn good at it.

Until the threats start.

With Cat’s urging, I hire Jackson’s company to protect me and find the guy responsible. I didn’t expect my bodyguard to look that good. His body was a dream, his face was perfection, and his dark eyes drew me in. Too bad he carried a past that tarnished his present.

Because Luka Sarbent has the potential for love.

But when the threats start to get more perilous, his heart hardens.

I trust him to keep me safe from the dangers thrown at me, but I don’t trust him with my heart. Ironic really … because I’ve never felt more guarded …

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 5++ ⭐️ Review: Ashley Jade’s All In, the third and final book of her Complicated Parts trilogy ✍🏻

Overall Grade: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️++

All In, Ashley Jade’s final book of her Complicated Parts trilogy, marks an end: an end to want. Fold, the first book of this series, began my adoration for Ashley Jade. It is the very first book I read from her. I wish I could remember how I came to find that book, but I remember that it ignited my love for her storytelling. Fold and Bluff were my initiation into the world of alpha-hole heroes and upending characterizations of heroines. I remember distinctly thinking about Kit, the heroine of this trilogy, for long periods of time. Ashley Jade was considering $exuality in more fluid terms before societal buzzwords or labels such as pan$exuality or demi$exuality were being bantered around. She was interrogating attraction and love between souls before we were really focusing on it as a larger population, and I was confused and intrigued and thoughtful about it. I’m sure there are LGBTQA scholars who might scream at her for her insistence on Preston and Kit, but I think she has done all of us in romancelandia a favor by playing with this notion in her Complicated Parts trilogy.

I have waited longingly for years for All In. When Jade finished Bluff, I was heartbroken. I could feel Kit’s pain, and I wanted to be absolved of it. This is romance after all, so I needed a happy ending for Kit and Preston, but Jade, the masochist, had other stories that needed telling, so I’ve waited, clearly the sadist in this relationship. And Jade, with this story, had work to do. There was much to be done to get Kit and Preston to a happy ending: absolving Kit’s hurt, explaining Preston’s side “business,” rectifying Kit’s grandmother’s agreement, and revealing and ameliorating Preston’s past traumas, all while finding a space for Kit and Preston. Like peeling the layers of an onion, Jade deftly and beautifully juggles all of her storylines. I will say that there is one moment (of which I will not divulge here so as not to spoil anything about this book) that I felt was remedied too quickly and hurried us away from it. To be honest, it isn’t necessary to linger there long for the rest of the story. Considering this book is 497 pages, I shouldn’t be curious, but I guess I wanted to see more of the consequences of it. That being said, this is neither here nor there to the overall story.

All In is emotionally painful, yet titillating and expressive in one fell swoop. There were times when I needed a quick TikTok break away from Preston’s outer meanness and Kit’s empathy that gutted her. Yet, as the story goes, as Jade peels those layers of their story away, you fall deeper into them, into their traumas, into their inexplicable attraction, and into their love. Jade forces us to consider that souls, not labels, not expectations, can become fated for each other no matter the outer package. That feels so important in the world of romancelandia, when everywhere we turn, we encounter tropes and genres and tradition. All In feels like a kick to that. There are definitely traditional parts of this story: the happy ending and the $exual connection between Kit and Preston. But Jade is so careful with Kit and her characterization, taking the time to mete out her feelings. She’s so careful in Preston’s evolution and healing. She makes her readers work for all of it, and you find yourself “all in” with their story.

Is waiting for All In worth it? Absolutely. Ashley Jade’s insistence on taking her time with this story was responsible, it is timely, and it needed to be told right now. Our society has caught up to the ideas behind her characters, and it’s made for a story that gives Preston and Kit the happy ending they deserve. Every turn of the page of this book was a revelation, and I’m thankful to the universe for drawing me to Ashley Jade. All In reminds me that she’s a very special kind of romance writer because, through the genius of her storytelling, she shows us what an “imperfectly perfect” looks like, and that love is both painful and joyful in equal measure. In a world that is far from perfect, that seems like an important lesson to learn.

In love and romance,

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 4 ⭐️ Review: Krystyna Allyn’s Firefly ✍🏻

Overall Grade: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Firefly by Krystyna Allyn is a story about moving beyond your past or your circumstances. In this book, her heroine, Melody, has endured the pain of absentee and emotionally abusive parents. As a protection, she has created a vault of her bad memories and shored it up with walls to protect her emotions. She encounters the hero of the story, Trevor, a man trying to create a good future for himself as an electrical contractor. They meet haphazardly in Brooklyn where Melody resides and Trevor is staying for a short time. It’s a quick meet-cute that doesn’t progress beyond some flirting, but they each make an impact on the other. Fast-forward a bit, Melody has had to leave Brooklyn to escape her mother and her mother’s criminal boyfriend; she finds herself in Colebury, Vermont, very much in Trevor’s “neck of the woods.” They once again meet at Speakeasy, the setting for Allyn’s story, and the initial attraction they felt in Brooklyn returns. However, Trevor’s family is a mess, threatening his future plans, while Melody avoids any romantic entanglements. All of this is set up for Trevor breaking down Melody’s walls, and Melody forcing Trevor to deal with this family’s issues. Firefly becomes this emotional story about the need to drop your emotional walls and become vulnerable to find the best version of yourself.

Overall, I liked Firefly. However, I wasn’t in love with it. Allyn’s hero, Trevor, is a strange amalgamation of bedroom alpha, empathic good guy with a side of stupid hero. From one chapter to the next, you’re never quite sure which side of Trevor you’ll get, and it makes for an uneven characterization. I understand that heroes can have more than one identity, but his alpha in the bedroom mixed with his unwillingness to tell Melody about his family mixed with his insistence that she share all parts of herself with him while he holds himself back…yeah, that makes him hard to like at times. When he’s working hard to crumble Melody’s protective walls, he’s lovely because he seems to “see” her. However, he makes decisions that undermine that compassion when he fails to tell her about his family and sets her up to rebuild those walls.

Additionally, I think Allyn takes too much time in her story with Melody becoming more vulnerable. The focus of Melody’s journey is her issues with her horrible mother and absentee father. She must overcome them in order to find her happy ending with Trevor. However, she fails to see the family she’s carefully constructed. She’s surrounded by people, in both Brooklyn and Colebury, who are wise and provide her with great advice. Yet, she takes most of the story to realize that her parents don’t really matter if her constructed family adores her. Allyn takes a bit too long to help her get there.

All of that, though, are minute issues. For the most part, Firefly is an enjoyable read, connecting us to some of our favorite Speakeasy Taproom series characters, while also introducing us to some new ones. I love that Krystyna Allyn has taken us back to this world that so many different voices are creating. If you’ve been following the Speakeasy Taproom series, then you will not want to miss this story. If you’ve yet to read it, don’t start here. Start at the beginning. You won’t regret it.

In love and romance,

Professor A
