Excerpt:

Why leave a life as a millionaire? Why leave a perfect boyfriend?

Why leave family and a cute, derelict farmhouse and sex—God, why give up sex?

Because if I hadn’t, that darkness spilling in through my farmhouse window would have taken me. I’d wanted it to take me. I was ready for it to take me.

And somehow I managed to crawl my way here instead, gasping like a drowning man who’d just clawed his way to shore. I managed to save my own life—or I managed to let God save my life.

Either way, that was the cost of surviving. My old life.

Him.

Elijah scrubs his hands over his head, sinking into the tight curls for a moment. It’s longer now; he used to wear his hair short, with crisp, immaculate edges. Another change I wasn’t there to see. I wasn’t sitting on the couch with him when he rubbed his face and mused about growing a beard; I wasn’t poking him out of the way with my toothbrush while he faced the mirror, posing this way and that to imagine longer hair. I wasn’t there in bed with him at night, my legs tangled with his, while he complained about his job or feeling bored with his work, I wasn’t there when he sold his first article or when he submitted a portfolio to Mode.

I wasn’t there, because I was here. Praying and chopping wood.

I wasn’t there, and this Jamie person was.

Elijah stands up, facing away from me for a moment, before he turns back. The sun abruptly shifts through a break in the clouds and drives back the pre-rain murk in the cloister, illuminating Elijah in a haze of gold.

If I were to make a stained-glass window displaying an image of God’s creativity and capacity for beauty, it would be this. It would be Elijah with an unshaven face and in those shorts, it would be his eyes in that dark gold-brown hue, it would be his mouth, that jaw, that throat. It would be a saint in low-top sneakers with a halo of Kansas sunshine around his head.

He pulls his lower lip between his teeth for just an instant before releasing it, and then he straightens up, looking at me with an expression that defies interpretation. Only his eyes seem beyond his usual control, blazing with a heat that might be fury or grief, I can’t tell.

“I loved you for a long time after you left,” he says. “I thought you should know that.”

He doesn’t have to say the next part, because I already know; I already know he doesn’t love me anymore.

And with a small nod, he turns and walks out of the cloister, the first spots of rain blooming on his shirt and his head bowed, as if in prayer.

Blurb:

I can’t have Elijah Iverson.

I can’t have him because he’s my older brother’s best friend. I can’t have him because I broke his heart five years ago; because he’s now engaged to someone else—someone kind and dependable who deserves his whiskey eyes, his soft mouth, his fierce intellect.

I can’t have Elijah because I’ve chosen God instead.

The Bell brothers, though . . . well, we don’t exactly have the greatest track record with vows. But I’m determined to do this monk thing right—to pledge myself to a cloistered life and spend the rest of my years in chastity and prayer. But now Elijah’s here. He’s here and he’s coming with me on my European monastery road trip, and between the whispered confessions and the stolen kisses and the moments bent over an ancient altar, my vows are feeling flimsier by the day.

And vows or not, I know in my heart that it would take more than a good and holy monk to resist Elijah Iverson right now. It would take a saint.

And we all know that I’m no saint.

(This is the third full-length standalone in the Priest Collection, featuring Father Bell’s brother, Aiden Bell. You do not have to read Priest or Sinner to read Saint.)

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 5 ⭐️ Review: A.L. Jackson’s Give Me A Reason, book 1 of her Redemption Hills series ✍🏻

Overall Grade: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

Anyone who has read A.L. Jackson knows that she corners the market on the tortured hero. She writes the heck out of them and causes you to fall deeply for them because their brokenness and belief that they don’t deserve the heroine is attractive. Her newest story, Give Me A Reason, is no different. LIke her Sunder Guys or her Falling Stars heroes, Trent, her newest hero, is the epitome of the broken hero. Jackson writes darkness into him which means, based on the rules of romancelandia and Jackson herself, he needs light and life to counter his shadows. And Give Me A Reason does not disappoint in presenting Trent and Eden as the yin to the other’s yang.

Beautifully constructed, Give Me A Reason is lyrical in its presentation. Jackson’s writing is as much poetry as it is prose, and she entices you into her story with punctuated fragments to mimic punches to your soul and words that feel like the overwhelming emotions of Trent and Eden.

The oscillation in the denial of their feelings for each other pulls you in while the broken chronology of her story holds you in its thrall. Moving forward for most of the story, Jackson keenly punches into their forward motion with the details of the past, and she builds her story like an expert mason does a brick wall. Little by little, she teases at your own emotions as Trent and Eden move back and forth between denial and attraction. At just the right times, Jackson gives you more of them, but everything feels precarious even to the last 5 percent of this book.

I love the message of forgiveness: forgiveness for past wrongs, forgiveness from others, but most importantly, the forgiveness of one’s self. This is the underlying theme that twists and turns through Give Me A Reason. Trent’s denial of love and light comes from his inability to forgive himself of his past. He believes he cannot have good in the world. Jackson makes you empathize with him through his self-flagellation. Then, she gives you his Eden, his paradise, in the form of his heroine. She speaks truth into his darkness, and you find yourself lost in their love affair.

Add to the message ancillary characters such as Gage, Trent’s son, who steals the story. Jackson has this ability to write children characters that add dimension to her story while providing levity. Additionally, we meet Jud and Logan, Trent’s brothers, who will find their own stories in this new Redemption Hills series. These two act as his wizened and closest advisors, a true place to fall when he becomes overwhelmed by his adoration for Eden.

One moment, Give Me A Reason is a study in chemistry, and the next moment, it’s a heart-pounding bit of suspense. At its core, though, A.L. Jackson’s newest book is a fluid, beautiful romance that reminds us that forgiveness and love should rule our lives.

In love and romance,

Synopsis

From NYT and USA Today bestselling author A.L. Jackson comes a single-dad, enemies-to-lovers stand-alone romance about a jaded club owner and his son’s teacher…

Eden Murphy came into my club looking to make some extra cash.

A girl like her didn’t belong in a place like this.

She’d get ripped to shreds.

Most likely by me.

There’s nothing but sweetness dripping from her sexy little body, and I’m the monster who’s salivating to get a taste.

Trent Lawson is the last man I should want.

Dark.

Dangerous.

So wickedly gorgeous he makes my knees weak.

He’s also an arrogant jerk who happens to be my new boss.

When I discover his adorable son is also in my kindergarten class, I know I have to keep my distance.

But neither of us can ignore the attraction that flames.

One glance, and our hearts race.

One touch, and we’re aching for what we can’t have.

One night, and we’re falling fast.

Dragging her into my sordid world is wrong.

It doesn’t matter.

Eden Murphy is mine.

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 4 ⭐️ Review: Laura Pavlov’s Charmed ✍🏻

Overall Grade: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

Okay, Laura Pavlov, I see you. Charmed, your newest story, is charming and cute and everything great about romance. First of all, I love that this series, the Willow Springs series, revolves around a girl gang of friends. That each of them will get their own story is fantastic. This story, Charmed, tells the story of Maura and Crew, whose families have no love lost between them. Pavlov’s Charmed is your fabulous enemies-to-lovers, star-crossed lovers brand of romance, and this girl, this reader, LOVES this type of story.

Now, to make this story even better, Pavlov has constructed a grumpy, workaholic, playboy of a hero in Crew. But here’s the thing…we all know that the grumpy hero is actually a BIG ole softie, and it’s true. What Crew has done is use work to protect himself from the power of relationships. He loves his family, and his brothers and parents are the only ones he allows in, but everyone else gets the guy who would rather work than live life abundantly. And there are reasons for it. There’s a reason that he lives, eats, and breathes work. However, that’s his story to tell in Charmed.

Maura is an overachiever too. She’s been chosen by the faculty of her college to work as an intern for Crew’s company. She’s a top student, an obedient daughter, and a wonderful friend. However, she must contend with Crew from the first day on the job as he is ready to make her “pay” for belonging to her family since his family and her family don’t get along. Interestingly enough, Maura doesn’t know why. She’s always been curious. As their story progresses, she finds this out along with other family secrets, and her life is upended. This becomes the tension of their journey.

From the minute Crew and Maura begin working, their attraction is undeniable. Pavlov’s skill in crafting their push and pull is undeniable, and you find yourself rooting for them. Thankfully, she doesn’t disappoint her readers, but sadly, you have to endure a few moments of angst and anxious moments to get there. In the end, you find this sweet ending for Crew and Maura.

You will find yourself charmed by Laura Pavlov’s Charmed. I really enjoyed this story of enemies-to-lovers, and it makes for a great weekend read.

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 4 ⭐️ Review: Patricia D. Eddy’s Rogue Officer ✍🏻

Overall Grade: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

I’ve been sitting on this review for too long. Life has been crazy, so finding the space to sit and tell you WHY you should be reading Patricia D. Eddy, specifically her newest offering, Rogue Officer, has been difficult, but it’s necessary.

For me, Eddy’s brand of romantic suspense engages you seamlessly into a tale of danger. In her earlier series, Away From Keyboard, those dangers seem grounded in former military experiences. In her newest series, Gone Rogue, the heroes are fighting against threats to their heroines. You find swoony heroes with Eddy’s brand of brokenness. As the hero protects his heroine, he finds completion by falling deeply in love with her and finding his soulmate.

Add to that Eddy’s eponymous message about constructed families protecting their own. In each book, the relationships grown through adversity show the power of community to overcome troubles.

Eddy’s newest story, Rogue Officer, offers up more of this. Her hero, Griff is eight months out from a catastrophic physical challenge, and he’s trying to find his way in this new world. His friend, Austin, calls on him to protect the heroine of this story, Sloane. Sloane is hiding her identity in plain sight, but her past has come to undermine her life. When those troubles threaten her life, Austin asks Griff to protect her. In doing so, these two are attracted to each other and seem to “see” each other in a way that others don’t. As Sloane’s life becomes more endangered, Griff must fight his limitations to save her.

Surprisingly, Rogue Officer has quite the insta-love trope. Eddy has done this before, but in more recent books, there seems to be a prolonged journey into the love relationship. Griff and Sloane know fairly quickly that they are soulmates. While it takes them a bit to admit it, they banter phrases like “she’s the one for me” or “I’ll want him for the rest of my life” easily. That’s my only criticism of Eddy’s story as it’s my least favorite trope. But that has more to do with me than Eddy’s capacity to write her story.

Eddy is a powerhouse at writing romantic suspense while infusing them with interesting characters undercut by limitations. Griff and Sloane’s challenges are physical, mental, and emotional, and they are not your usual romance fare. It’s clear that Eddy’s careful in sensitively writing about their personal inflictions. In fact, if you had to use one word to explain her writing, it would be “care.” It’s clear that she’s thoughtful, purposeful, and intentional in her storytelling. And this creates stories such as Rogue Officer that leave you quickly turning the page to get to the next part of the story.

If you love insta-love, romantic suspense with a broody, broken hero who falls deeply in love with a heroine who is also broken by her past traumas, then you will LOVE Rogue Officer by Patricia Eddy.

In love and romance,

Excerpt

“Look guys,” I hold up my hands, “I appreciate your concern, honestly. But I know exactly what I’m doing—everything’s going to be fine.”

If this were a movie, now would be the time when the narrator’s voiceover comes on and informs the audience that I did not, in fact, know what I was doing and nothing—nothing—was going to be fucking fine.

EXCERPT
Hell.
Hell was the moment I stepped into the grocery store a few days later and nearly knocked right into him.
“It’s you.” He held up a long, phallic-looking baguette and shook it. “Remind you of something?”
My face felt hot. “Very funny.”
“I haven’t seen much of you outside over the last couple of days. Did we scare you?”
This was not Shower Guy, but rather the one who’d caught me peeping. He had a strong British accent and was extremely tall, with dark hair.
“I’ve just been taking a break from the backyard.”
“Too hot outside for you, eh?”
“Look, I didn’t intend to see what I saw. I’ve been into…birdwatching this summer. Then one day you two moved in, and I—”
“Whoa, whoa, whoa…” The other guy had appeared next to his housemate. “I’m sorry for anything he might have said to you just now. Rest assured, it’s all shite. He’s just playing around.” He, too, had a strong British accent. “I don’t believe we’ve properly met.”
“Although, you’ve improperly met…” his friend chided.
“Put a sock in it, Sigmund.”
Okay, so the asshole is Sig—or Sigmund. The previously naked one must be Leo, then. They were both tall and good-looking, but Leo, with his chiseled features, lustrous hair, and striking eyes was on another level—a total Adonis, and intimidatingly gorgeous.
Sigmund shrugged. “Surely she knows I’m just kidding.”
“But you don’t know when to stop. That’s always been your problem. Can’t you see how red her face is getting? You’re embarrassing her.”
Uh…how red is my face getting? This was mortifying. I couldn’t control that about myself. After all, I was a redhead with fair skin covered in freckles. Whenever I got embarrassed, I basically turned red from head to toe.
Leo’s tone softened. “I apologize for his rude behavior.” He held out his hand. “I’m Leo Covington.”
I took it, enjoying the warmth of his skin. “Felicity Dunleavy.”
The other guy offered his hand. “Sigmund Benedictus. But please call me Sig.”

Benedictus?
Been a dick-tus.
He sure had.
Fitting.

“Good to meet you,” I said.
“And you, as well, Freckles.”
Freckles? He couldn’t have come up with a more original nickname? I was self-conscious about my freckles, and typically wanted to murder anyone who dubbed me Freckles.
“Do you mind not calling me that?”
“Do you prefer a different nickname?” Sig asked. “Peeping Tom, perhaps?”
Leo gritted his teeth. “Enough. Seriously.”
“All right. I’ll behave. Going in search of tapenade for this bread.” He winked. “Be back.”
Relief washed over me as he walked away.
“I’m…really sorry about him,” Leo said.
“Well, given how you came to know of me, the ridicule is warranted. I shouldn’t have been spying.”
“I don’t reckon you anticipated seeing me in my birthday suit. That was the first time I’d ever done that. I assumed no one was in the vicinity, of course. For the record, I don’t make a habit of showering for all the world to see. I never had an outdoor shower in England. So it’s a novelty.”
Leo was simply striking. His hair was light brown with golden undertones. He had beautiful bone structure and full lips that were difficult not to stare at. There wasn’t one thing I would change about his face. His eyes were a deep blue. They reminded me of a piece of sea glass I’d used to make a necklace once.
I cleared my throat. “What brings you to Narragansett?”
“I’m taking six months off from life. It seemed like a good location to get lost. We picked this place randomly on a map, actually. Sigmund and I have spent our time in a few different locales. First was California, then New York, and now Rhode Island.”
“Are you two…together?”
His brow lifted. “What do you mean by together? We’re rooming together. But if you mean romantically together, then no. Exactly what did you assume?”
“I thought you might be gay.”
“If I were gay, I’d have far better taste in men than that wanker cousin of mine. What in God’s name made you think we were gay?”
“I don’t know. Two handsome men…living together in a big house…”
“So, if I’m a guy living with another man, I’m automatically shagging him?”
“You’re right. That was a hasty assumption.”
“Thank you for the compliment, by the way.”
I just called him handsome, didn’t I? Feeling suddenly hot, I looked toward the produce section. “Well, I’d better be going…”
“Before you do, I want to apologize for the flowers he sent your way the other night. I urged him not to. Not everyone appreciates that sense of humor.”
I shrugged. “It was fine. And they were pretty. I was embarrassed, at first, but then I ended up laughing about the whole thing. Mrs. Angelini certainly got a kick out of it.”
His brow lifted. “Mrs. Angelini?”
How do I explain who she is without unloading my history on this stranger? I kept it simple. “She’s my roommate.”
“Ah. Roommate. So she must be your lesbian lover, then.” He raised an eyebrow, and I had to smile. “Anyway, why do you call her Mrs. Angelini? She doesn’t have a first name?”
“Well, she’s seventy. It’s more of a respect thing. It’s what I started calling her some years back, and it stuck. She’s always asked me to call her by her first name, but I got used to calling her Mrs. Angelini.”
“I see.” His eyes seared into mine for a moment. “Your roommate is seventy. And how old are you, might I ask?”
“Twenty-four. What about you?”
“Twenty-eight,” he answered. His eyes lingered on mine for a bit. “Listen, we’re going to be renting the house across from you for the entire summer. We know virtually nothing about Narragansett. I’d love to pick your brain about places to go and things to do here. Maybe you wouldn’t mind coming over for tea sometime this week?”
“Tea? You really are British, aren’t you?”
“Guilty as charged.” His white teeth gleamed.
Looking down at my feet, I said, “I don’t know.”
“I promise not to take off my clothes…” He added a crooked smile.
I let out a much-needed laugh. “Well, since you put it that way.”
“Tomorrow at two, then? Or whatever time works for you.”
A part of me wanted to refuse, but why? It wasn’t like I had anything more exciting going on. I didn’t quite understand whether he genuinely wanted my expertise on Narragansett, or if there was something more to the invitation, now that I knew he wasn’t gay.
“Sure. Two tomorrow works.”
“Brilliant. You know how to get to the house without having to swim across, I take it?”
“Yes.” I smiled.
“Very well, then. And I promise, Sigmund will be on his best behavior.”
“I can handle it if he’s not.”
This seemingly rich traveler had no idea just how much I could handle. I might turn red when I was embarrassed, but I’d grown a pretty-thick skin over the years.
That’s the way it is when you always had to fend for yourself.
