Excerpt from Changing the Rules by Catherine Bybee
Claire collapsed onto the living room sofa the second she walked in the door. Not only had she suffered a headache the entire day, Cooper ran her like a trainer working an Iron Man competitor.
βThat sounds like a bad day,β Jax said as she walked around the corner of the kitchen.
βYou donβt want to know.β
Claire flung an arm over her eyes to block out the sun.
She heard Jax walk in the room and then exhale as she sat down. βYouβre right. I donβt give a crap what happened in school, unless it involved Cooper. What I want is the details of last night after I got out of the car.β
Before Cooper picked them up, Claire and Jax had agreed that Jax would give them a few minutes to have a private conversation. Now Claire regretted that plan.
βThe long story, or the short story?β Claire asked.
βWhatever one you want to deliver.β
Claireβs arms slid off her head, and she pushed herself into a sitting position.
βCooper has a thing for me.β
Jax sat silent, blinked a few times. βOkay, and?β
βWhat do you mean, βokay, and?ββ
βSorry, Claire, but thatβs obvious. I think youβd have to be an idiot to not see it. Even the guys on the team see it.β
βWhat? Are they talking aboutββ
Jax stopped her with a shake of the head. βOf course not. But you can tell by how they look at the two of you that they know thereβs an attraction.β
Claire pointed to her chest. βIβm not doing anything, itβs him.β
βMaybe itβs more him.β
She kept shaking her head. βNo, itβs all him. Iβm not instigating anything.β
βYou flirt with him all the time.β
βI do not,β Claire huffed.
One look from Jax and she rescinded her statement. βOkay, we banter. But itβs always been like that. I have the pool stick, he makes some kind of phallic joke. Itβs banter. Not flirting.β
Jax sat back, crossed her arms over her chest. Claire couldnβt believe her best friend was calling her out. βWeβre friends. And last night he ruined that by telling me heβs had a thing for me since we met. Told me he left sunny California for dreary London because I was too young and naive to handle him when I first got here.β
Jax narrowed her eyes. βIs that really how he said that?β
Claireβs headache was coming back. βNo. He said I was a child.β
βA child?β
Claire stood up from the couch, started for the kitchen. βHe kept repeating that I was eighteen back then.β
Jax followed behind. βWhich is true.β
Claire yanked open the fridge, pulled out a beer. βWhose side are you on?β
βYours. Always. But I just donβt see where all the fire is about this. Cooper owns up to the flirting comments and puppy-dog looks he gives you, and youβre pissed because he walked away six years ago.β
Like picking a lock, the pieces slid into place and finally started to click. βBut heβs my friend.β
βTrying to say youβve never thought of him as more?β
βNo.β Her denial was quick.
Jax started to smile. βYouβve never checked out his ass? The guy can fill out a pair of jeans.β
Some of the anger sheβd harbored all day eased. βThatβs true.β
βAnd that smile. When heβs belly laughing he has the tiniest dimples.β
Claire closed her eyes, pictured his smile. She hadnβt noticed the dimples, but now that she thought about it . . . She opened her eyes to find Jax staring at her.
βSounds like you have a thing for him,β Claire said.
βWouldnβt matter if I did, and I donβt, by the way, but it wouldnβt matter. The guy canβt stop looking at you.β
βGod, what am I going to do with him?β
βI donβt think you have to do anything. Itβs not like he asked you out and you said no and now itβs awkward.β
βYouβre right. Itβs worse than that.β
βYouβre overthinking it.β Jax pushed off the counter. βYou know what, letβs gussy up a little and hit a proper happy hour. Weβll talk in German and pretend we donβt speak English and shamelessly flirt.β
Claire abandoned her beer. βNow that is exactly what I need to do and get my mind off of boys.β
